The Celebrity Cricket League (CCL) featuring movie stars playing for six city-based franchises rivals IPL for popularity on TV and in stadia. It expects to be profitable by the end of the current fiscal – within two years of starting up. And it is growing in size.

It is back. And this time it’s bigger and better. The CCL, Celebrity Cricket League, which has become a rage across the nation, is all set to begin with a bang. The Chennai Rhinos, owned by Gangaprasad of GVR Group, has Sharath Kumar as the advisor and the team comprises of stars like Arya, Jiiva, Bharath, Srikanth, Shaam and others. The team, led by Vishal, will play their first match against the Mumbai Heroes on January 14 at the Sharjah International Stadium. The match will be telecast on January 14 on Sun TV at 9.30 pm IST.

With Sameera Reddy and Amla Paul as the brand ambassadors of Chennai Rhinos, the team is all set to woo Lady Luck. The CCL Season 2 matches promise to be a complete carnival boasting of a massive star line-up and some scintillating performance by actresses and performers at every venue.

Vishnu Vardhan Induri, 34, who borrowed Modi’s idea and tweaked it to create CCL, said he has sold a 30% stake in the company that owns the rights to the tournament to franchise owners. He plans to sell 10% more for Rs 250- 300 crore. He is now choosing between suitors, some of whom include media firms.

“We aren’t just treating this as a game of cricket. This can be seen as an extension of reality TV content, which is a very successful concept in India,” said Induri, a serial entrepreneur whose previous ventures include social media company bharatstudent and Telugu entertainment channel Local TV.

If things go according to plan, an initial public offering is expected around 2014-15. CCL will add two more teams to its roster and the show will also travel to Singapore and Malaysia to entertain the large Indian diaspora.

An interesting rivalry is also developing between the so-called ‘Badshahs of Bollywood’ Salman Khan (his brother Sohail owns Mumbai Hereos in CCL) and Shah Rukh Khan (the owner of IPL’s Kolkata Knight Riders). In the 2012 season, Mumbai Heroes, skippered by Suniel Shetty, was easily more popular with TV audiences than Kolkata Knight Riders in 2011.

CCL franchise owners get 7.5% of the revenue of the title sponsorship deal with Parle as well as satellite deals. Induri and his co-promoters, including Tamil actor-director Sharath Kumar, get to keep 30% of the tickets for each match. The rest is divided among owners.

Induri said revenue from sponsorships has grown by 300% in the second season, but declined to give more details. The promoters are also talking to media partners to have the annual television deals converted into more lucrative long-term contracts.
