American children’s show Reading Rainbow ends 26 year run

Thursday, September 10, 2009

Reading Rainbow, an American children’s television series is to stop showing on television. It ceased to be shown on Friday after a 26 year long run because of a funding shortfall of several hundred thousand dollars needed to renew the broadcast rights.

The PBS show has more than two-dozen Emmy awards, and its run is shorter only than Sesame Street and Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood.

Each episode of the show would focus on a theme in a specific book and then explore that theme through multiple stories. Each show would also provide recommendations for books that children should look for when they went to their library.

John Grant, from WNED Buffalo (Reading Rainbow’s home station) said “Reading Rainbow taught kids why to read,… the love of reading — [the show] encouraged kids to pick up a book and to read.”

Linda Simensky, vice president for children’s programming at PBS, said “We’ve been able to identify the earliest steps that we need to take. Now we know what we need to do first. Even just from five years ago, I think we all know so much more about how to use television to teach.” She went on to say that the running length of the show was “miraculous”.

It is believed by some, including John Grant, that both the funding crunch and a shift in the philosophy of educational television programming contributed to ending the series.

Stanford physicists print smallest-ever letters ‘SU’ at subatomic level of 1.5 nanometres tall

Wednesday, February 4, 2009

A new historic physics record has been set by scientists for exceedingly small writing, opening a new door to computing‘s future. Stanford University physicists have claimed to have written the letters “SU” at sub-atomic size.

Graduate students Christopher Moon, Laila Mattos, Brian Foster and Gabriel Zeltzer, under the direction of assistant professor of physics Hari Manoharan, have produced the world’s smallest lettering, which is approximately 1.5 nanometres tall, using a molecular projector, called Scanning Tunneling Microscope (STM) to push individual carbon monoxide molecules on a copper or silver sheet surface, based on interference of electron energy states.

A nanometre (Greek: ?????, nanos, dwarf; ?????, metr?, count) is a unit of length in the metric system, equal to one billionth of a metre (i.e., 10-9 m or one millionth of a millimetre), and also equals ten Ångström, an internationally recognized non-SI unit of length. It is often associated with the field of nanotechnology.

“We miniaturised their size so drastically that we ended up with the smallest writing in history,” said Manoharan. “S” and “U,” the two letters in honor of their employer have been reduced so tiny in nanoimprint that if used to print out 32 volumes of an Encyclopedia, 2,000 times, the contents would easily fit on a pinhead.

In the world of downsizing, nanoscribes Manoharan and Moon have proven that information, if reduced in size smaller than an atom, can be stored in more compact form than previously thought. In computing jargon, small sizing results to greater speed and better computer data storage.

“Writing really small has a long history. We wondered: What are the limits? How far can you go? Because materials are made of atoms, it was always believed that if you continue scaling down, you’d end up at that fundamental limit. You’d hit a wall,” said Manoharan.

In writing the letters, the Stanford team utilized an electron‘s unique feature of “pinball table for electrons” — its ability to bounce between different quantum states. In the vibration-proof basement lab of Stanford’s Varian Physics Building, the physicists used a Scanning tunneling microscope in encoding the “S” and “U” within the patterns formed by the electron’s activity, called wave function, arranging carbon monoxide molecules in a very specific pattern on a copper or silver sheet surface.

“Imagine [the copper as] a very shallow pool of water into which we put some rocks [the carbon monoxide molecules]. The water waves scatter and interfere off the rocks, making well defined standing wave patterns,” Manoharan noted. If the “rocks” are placed just right, then the shapes of the waves will form any letters in the alphabet, the researchers said. They used the quantum properties of electrons, rather than photons, as their source of illumination.

According to the study, the atoms were ordered in a circular fashion, with a hole in the middle. A flow of electrons was thereafter fired at the copper support, which resulted into a ripple effect in between the existing atoms. These were pushed aside, and a holographic projection of the letters “SU” became visible in the space between them. “What we did is show that the atom is not the limit — that you can go below that,” Manoharan said.

“It’s difficult to properly express the size of their stacked S and U, but the equivalent would be 0.3 nanometres. This is sufficiently small that you could copy out the Encyclopaedia Britannica on the head of a pin not just once, but thousands of times over,” Manoharan and his nanohologram collaborator Christopher Moon explained.

The team has also shown the salient features of the holographic principle, a property of quantum gravity theories which resolves the black hole information paradox within string theory. They stacked “S” and the “U” – two layers, or pages, of information — within the hologram.

The team stressed their discovery was concentrating electrons in space, in essence, a wire, hoping such a structure could be used to wire together a super-fast quantum computer in the future. In essence, “these electron patterns can act as holograms, that pack information into subatomic spaces, which could one day lead to unlimited information storage,” the study states.

The “Conclusion” of the Stanford article goes as follows:

According to theory, a quantum state can encode any amount of information (at zero temperature), requiring only sufficiently high bandwidth and time in which to read it out. In practice, only recently has progress been made towards encoding several bits into the shapes of bosonic single-photon wave functions, which has applications in quantum key distribution. We have experimentally demonstrated that 35 bits can be permanently encoded into a time-independent fermionic state, and that two such states can be simultaneously prepared in the same area of space. We have simulated hundreds of stacked pairs of random 7 times 5-pixel arrays as well as various ideas for pathological bit patterns, and in every case the information was theoretically encodable. In all experimental attempts, extending down to the subatomic regime, the encoding was successful and the data were retrieved at 100% fidelity. We believe the limitations on bit size are approxlambda/4, but surprisingly the information density can be significantly boosted by using higher-energy electrons and stacking multiple pages holographically. Determining the full theoretical and practical limits of this technique—the trade-offs between information content (the number of pages and bits per page), contrast (the number of measurements required per bit to overcome noise), and the number of atoms in the hologram—will involve further work.Quantum holographic encoding in a two-dimensional electron gas, Christopher R. Moon, Laila S. Mattos, Brian K. Foster, Gabriel Zeltzer & Hari C. Manoharan

The team is not the first to design or print small letters, as attempts have been made since as early as 1960. In December 1959, Nobel Prize-winning physicist Richard Feynman, who delivered his now-legendary lecture entitled “There’s Plenty of Room at the Bottom,” promised new opportunities for those who “thought small.”

Feynman was an American physicist known for the path integral formulation of quantum mechanics, the theory of quantum electrodynamics and the physics of the superfluidity of supercooled liquid helium, as well as work in particle physics (he proposed the parton model).

Feynman offered two challenges at the annual meeting of the American Physical Society, held that year in Caltech, offering a $1000 prize to the first person to solve each of them. Both challenges involved nanotechnology, and the first prize was won by William McLellan, who solved the first. The first problem required someone to build a working electric motor that would fit inside a cube 1/64 inches on each side. McLellan achieved this feat by November 1960 with his 250-microgram 2000-rpm motor consisting of 13 separate parts.

In 1985, the prize for the second challenge was claimed by Stanford Tom Newman, who, working with electrical engineering professor Fabian Pease, used electron lithography. He wrote or engraved the first page of Charles Dickens’ A Tale of Two Cities, at the required scale, on the head of a pin, with a beam of electrons. The main problem he had before he could claim the prize was finding the text after he had written it; the head of the pin was a huge empty space compared with the text inscribed on it. Such small print could only be read with an electron microscope.

In 1989, however, Stanford lost its record, when Donald Eigler and Erhard Schweizer, scientists at IBM’s Almaden Research Center in San Jose were the first to position or manipulate 35 individual atoms of xenon one at a time to form the letters I, B and M using a STM. The atoms were pushed on the surface of the nickel to create letters 5nm tall.

In 1991, Japanese researchers managed to chisel 1.5 nm-tall characters onto a molybdenum disulphide crystal, using the same STM method. Hitachi, at that time, set the record for the smallest microscopic calligraphy ever designed. The Stanford effort failed to surpass the feat, but it, however, introduced a novel technique. Having equaled Hitachi’s record, the Stanford team went a step further. They used a holographic variation on the IBM technique, for instead of fixing the letters onto a support, the new method created them holographically.

In the scientific breakthrough, the Stanford team has now claimed they have written the smallest letters ever – assembled from subatomic-sized bits as small as 0.3 nanometers, or roughly one third of a billionth of a meter. The new super-mini letters created are 40 times smaller than the original effort and more than four times smaller than the IBM initials, states the paper Quantum holographic encoding in a two-dimensional electron gas, published online in the journal Nature Nanotechnology. The new sub-atomic size letters are around a third of the size of the atomic ones created by Eigler and Schweizer at IBM.

A subatomic particle is an elementary or composite particle smaller than an atom. Particle physics and nuclear physics are concerned with the study of these particles, their interactions, and non-atomic matter. Subatomic particles include the atomic constituents electrons, protons, and neutrons. Protons and neutrons are composite particles, consisting of quarks.

“Everyone can look around and see the growing amount of information we deal with on a daily basis. All that knowledge is out there. For society to move forward, we need a better way to process it, and store it more densely,” Manoharan said. “Although these projections are stable — they’ll last as long as none of the carbon dioxide molecules move — this technique is unlikely to revolutionize storage, as it’s currently a bit too challenging to determine and create the appropriate pattern of molecules to create a desired hologram,” the authors cautioned. Nevertheless, they suggest that “the practical limits of both the technique and the data density it enables merit further research.”

In 2000, it was Hari Manoharan, Christopher Lutz and Donald Eigler who first experimentally observed quantum mirage at the IBM Almaden Research Center in San Jose, California. In physics, a quantum mirage is a peculiar result in quantum chaos. Their study in a paper published in Nature, states they demonstrated that the Kondo resonance signature of a magnetic adatom located at one focus of an elliptically shaped quantum corral could be projected to, and made large at the other focus of the corral.

Secret Downing Street Memo leaked

Saturday, May 14, 2005

Documents leaked from the U.K. government revealed an apparent secret agreement between the United States and the United Kingdom to attack Iraq in 2002. The Times, a British national newspaper, reported that newly-discovered documents reveal British and U.S. intentions to invade Iraq and leaders of the two countries had “discussed creating pretextual justifications for doing so”. The documents go on to say that Tony Blair decided the U.S. would need to “create” conditions to justify the war. The leaked document has not received much coverage in the United States.

The document, known popularly as the “Downing Street memo“, is a document purporting to contain the minutes taken during a meeting among United Kingdom government and political figures on July 23, 2002 discussing the build-up to the 2003 invasion of Iraq. Its authenticity has not been officially confirmed nor denied by the government, though Downing Street has stated that the document contains “nothing new.” There have been repeated media and congressional requests for clarification.

Downing Street in London contains the official residence of the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom] (at 10 Downing Street) and is a metonym for the United Kingdom government. Ultimately the United Kingdom sent 46,000 troops to join the United States-led action, by far the largest non-US contingent in the invasion.

The memo comes on the heels of other leaked documents from the UK. [1]

Small, medium, and large businesses alike compete to get on the list to have exhibits at tradeshows in Chicago. There are several reasons for this. Exhibiting at a tradeshow, and visiting the exhibits, can be advantageous for your business. Consider, as an easy example, why a prominent security company would have an exhibit at a Tradeshow. They are an established, huge, efficient business. The reason is they have a service to offer virtually every business at the show. Any business with a physical location has to be secured. This is just an example of why you would want to exhibit your business at a Tradeshow. You have a service or products to market, much like the large security company. Your products and services are needed by other exhibitors at the show and are needed by visitors. Your Regular customers will visit these shows simply because you are there representing your business. Offer show discounts or other incentives and build stronger connections. While you are at it, build new connections. The advantages are too significant to ignore.

The Magic of Visitor- to-Exhibitor Interaction

Are exhibitors selling or buying? Are visitors selling or buying? Tradeshows in Chicago are open territory. Of course exhibitors are selling. One could guess this is their major motive. Look deeper. You, as a small start-up company, could strategize a service to sell to an exhibitor even as a visitor with no exhibit, just a badge. This is the nature of interactions at tradeshows. It isn’t luck. It is work. What you could end up with is a Fortune 500 company simply because you took the initiative to present yourself selling your products or services at a show exhibit. By the way, it is normal to feel nervous. The reciprocal of this situation could be beneficial as well. The visitor meets the exhibitor, discovering a service to precisely enhance their new small business. It will be an investment. The visitor becomes a customer to the exhibitor. Ideally, the business relationship will be mutually beneficial. There are too many variants of these interactions to describe. Ultimately, the importance of both exhibiting and visiting tradeshows in Chicago should be apparent.

Ideas for Leveraging the Allure of Your Exhibit

Primarily, the first thing you want to do with an exhibit is create an attractive presence. If you have products, display them. If you offer services, have representatives present to interact with potential customers. Have an attractive graphic display. Create allure to bring customers in. Next, leverage your business allure to create a conversation. One approach is to stay in one place, waiting for visitors and vendors to find your exhibit among the multitude of other vendors. This can work well. Another idea is to send representatives out across the entire tradeshow while someone stays at your exhibit. Find a way to let others know where your booth is located. Analyze the results. The results are typically positive.

Missing Afghan jet found; 104 believed dead

Saturday, February 5, 2005

On Saturday NATO and Afghan troops located the wreckage of the Kam Air Boeing 737 missing since Thursday.

Afghan interior ministry spokesman Latfullah Mashal announced the discovery. “The debris of the plane was found around 25 kilometers east of Kabul in a mountainous area called Band-e Ghazi.”

The jet had been enroute to Kabul from Herat when it was diverted due to heavy snow. The crew then sought clearance to land across the border in Peshawar, Pakistan before it lost contact with air control. 104 persons are reported to have been aboard, including 8 crew members; there are no signs of survivors reported.

The weather conditions have hampered search and rescue efforts. NATO-operated helicopters located the crash site. Afghan police and units from Afghanistan’s foreign peacekeeping force are investigating the scene of the crash, according to Mr. Mashal.

2020 Melbourne Lord Mayor candidate Wayne Tseng answered some questions about his campaign for the upcoming election from Wikinews. The Lord Mayor election in the Australian city is scheduled to take place this week.

Tseng runs a firm called eTranslate, which helps software developers to make the software available to the users. In the candidate’s questionnaire, Tseng said eTranslate had led to him working with all three tiers of the government. He previously belonged to the Australian Liberal Party, but has left since then, to run for mayorship as an independent candidate.

Tseng is of Chinese descent, having moved to Australia with his parents from Vietnam. Graduated in Brisbane, Tseng received his PhD in Melbourne and has been living in the city, he told Wikinews. Tseng also formed Chinese Precinct Chamber of Commerce, an organisation responsible for many “community bond building initiatives”, the Lord Mayor candidate told Wikinews.

Tseng discussed his plans for leading Melbourne, recovering from COVID-19, and “Democracy 2.0” to ensure concerns of minorities in the city were also heard. Tseng also focused on the importance of the multi-culture aspect and talked about making Melbourne the capital of the aboriginals. Tseng also explained why he thinks Melbourne is poised to be a world city by 2030.

Tseng’s deputy Lord Mayor candidate Gricol Yang is a Commercial Banker and works for ANZ Banking Group.

Currently, Sally Capp is the Lord Mayor of Melbourne, the Victorian capital. Capp was elected as an interim Lord Mayor in mid-2018 after the former Lord Mayor Robert Doyle resigned from his position after sexual assault allegations. Doyle served as the Lord Mayor of Melbourne for almost a decade since 2008.

Teak Furniture Care Exposed

Teak Furniture Care Exposed

by

Frank Froggatt

It is not truly essential to protect teak. Teakwood is genuinely exclusive in the fact that if you leave it in its native state, it really doesn’t require any preservation. Teakwood is something that can be left outdoors all year long without having to worry about it, even if the conditions of the weather are extreme. It is because of this that many people deem teakwood as the supreme standard for any type of outdoor garden furnishings. This is why people love teak furniture so much.

While it’s true that teak will turn a gray color when left in the sun for prolonged periods of time, this is biological and it doesn’t harm any of the integrity of the wood.

A lot of people like to use a teak sealer on their wood in order to help it to maintain its biological honey color. It is often used to help to give the teak wood a darker color as well. The sealant isn’t only going to change the color of your wood, it will also give your teak some UV protection and also provide a protection from mold and mildew with an anti-fungicide. It doesn’t matter whether you’re teak furniture is old or new, you can apply teak sealants to them after they have been cleaned. These sealers aren’t the same thing as glaze. All it does is act as a preservative for the wood while still allowing it to breathe and release its native oils. This application is not going to peel or bubble up on you like lacquer will. These things work well as both protectants and stains for your wood. When you’re looking at colors, realize that the darker the stain you get, the better UV protection the furnishings will have, which means you won’t have to put it on as often. If you already have a piece of teak furnishings that has previously been varnished, then you will need to sand off all of the old varnish and either leave it native or stain it afterwards.

[youtube]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Z0wvfqE7qc[/youtube]

Applying a preservative to your teak wood furniture is pretty straightforward. Try to make sure that before you put on your first coat that the piece of furniture has been sitting in the sun for a week or two which allows all of the wood grains to open up. You should apply the first coat by spraying it liberally and then rubbing it in with a rag. Your teak furnishings is going to require two applications, and make sure that you get it on all surfaces. This includes top, bottom, sides, and in between any slats that might be present. Be sure to put your piece of furniture on something that you don’t mind if it gets stained, like an old bed sheet or something. In ensuing years, you will only need to apply the stain once a year after cleaning the wood with a mild detergent and water.

After doing this to your furniture you genuinely have to do very little else to protect it. It doesn’t hurt to wash your furniture every once in a while with a mild soap and water to remove any normal soiling. If you spill anything on the sealant, like coffee, wine, or foods that stain, you need to make sure that you get it off immediately as these things can penetrate through the sealer and leave stains on your furniture. If you want to avoid this, you can put a teak clear coat on the surfaces that are in danger, like tabletops as this will improve resistance to stains.

Because of the inherent oils and teak, it is pretty much impervious to water. Because of these organic oils that leach out of the wood, you don’t want to put any lacquer or water sealers on it. By putting polyurethane or lacquer products on it you can be assured that they will peel off and chip. This can really make a piece of beautiful furnishings ugly.

If you’re thinking of putting oil on your teak furnishings to help stain it, think again as this will only provide an avenue for mold to start growing on your furnishings, rather than the wanted effect of a darker color. If you do this, in order to fix the problem you will have to wash the furnishings with bleach and water and then sand all of the mold from the surface.

If you like to entertain people outdoors or spend any time outdoors just relaxing, then teak outdoor furniture is an excellent investment for you. It brings quality and class to your yard and outdoor setting. In order to protect your investment in is vital to know how to take care of it.

Now that you know what you have to do to take care of your teakwood furnishings, it is time to look at purchasing something innovative. There is nothing that quite gives elegance, relaxation, and nostalgia in an outdoor background like a quality
