Officials say at least seventeen killed by suspected US drones in Pakistan

Tuesday, February 2, 2010

According to reports from officials, at least sixteen militants were killed in Pakistan earlier today when suspected US drone attacks struck a village in the North Waziristan region, along the border with Afghanistan.

The drones hit suspected fighters’ hideouts, as well as a training centre, authorities said. According to the Al Jazeera news agency, local residents were recovering dead bodies and wounded people out of the rubble.

“Up to eight US drones fired some 18 missiles at multiple militant targets in Dattakhel village,” commented a police official to the Agence France-Presse news agency; “at least 16 militants were killed in the missile strikes.”

Pakistan’s government condemns the drone strikes, which have been increasingly frequent recently; however, US authorities claim the attacks have killed several high-ranking members of rebel groups, and are essential to protect soldiers in neighbouring Afghanistan.

The US government does not officially confirm the strikes; however, their troops in Afghanistan are the only known group in the area that uses unmanned drones that can fire missiles.

Several groups seek to purchase Saturn auto brand

Thursday, May 7, 2009

Penske Automotive Group, Inc., an Ohio-based investment group and Telesto Ventures have indicated separately that they are interested in purchasing the Saturn auto brand from General Motors (GM).

According to The Wall Street Journal, Nissan-Renault is interested in purchasing Saturn. Bloomberg, however, indicated that Nissan-Renault may be a partner of Penske’s potential bid. If Penske acquired the brand, they would distribute Saturn vehicles and outsource the assembly.

GM revealed that the Saturn brand along with Saab and Hummer were up for sale when unveiling their restructuring plans to Congress for governmental loans. While the Pontiac brand was originally to be a niche brand, GM had changed their plans recently and decided to eliminate the brand.

Telesto Ventures is an investment group that includes private equity firm Black Oak Partners LLC of Oklahoma City and several Saturn dealerships. Initially, Telesto will purchase Saturn branded cars from GM then act as a general retailer for foreign brands. Telesto is in talks with several foreign manufacturers.

The Ohio group includes many former senior auto company managers plus private financial backers, chemists and engineers who live in Michigan, Ohio, Indiana and Florida. This group plans to initially purchase cars from GM then purchase existing but closed plants due to automaker restructuring. Additionally, one of the partners indicated a willingness to accept some “legacy” cost in relation to the United Auto Workers. The Ohio group is also pursuing possible loans or other support from national and state governments.

GM is reviewing several offers for Saturn. GM has contracted with S.J. Girsky & Co. to advise them on the sale.

Although this usage isnt as common as it used to be, tomato is slang for an attractive woman. A hot tomato is slang for, well, lets call it a very attractive woman. This was before the Twiggy days, which heralded the popularity of the ultra-slim, and probably had something to do with being round, juicy and plump. Regardless of the terms origin, the fact is, the tomato has a lot to offer that indeed could contribute to you being a hot tomato. It is not only one of the healthiest foods available; it also has several topical uses that will leave your skin healthy and glowing. And if you dont know what skin type you are, it doesnt matter normal, oily, dry, or combination, they all benefit from the tomato as part of a natural skin care routine.

What does the tomato have to offer? One cup of tomatoes contains over 57 percent of the recommended daily value (RDV) of Vitamin C, over 22 percent of the RDV of Vitamin A, and over 10 percent of the RDV of Vitamin K. It is high in nine different minerals and five different B vitamins, and contains a good amount of Vitamin E, protein and dietary fiber. It is also very high in lycopene the phytochemical that gives the tomato its red color, and is known to be among the most potent antioxidants. When you eat a tomato, this combination of nutrients protects you against various cancers, heart disease, diabetes and migraines. And when you apply tomato pulp to your skin, it leaves it healthy and glowing.

For topical skin treatments, try the following recipes.

For oily skin, use tomato pulp by itself, or in combination with lime juice. Rub the pulp onto the skin, leave it on for 20 minutes to an hour, and wash it off with cool or warm water. This will shrink enlarged pours, and help get rid of blemishes.

For normal skin, juice of one tomato and add two teaspoons of yogurt. Apply to the face and let it dry, then wash it off. This will give your skin a healthy glow. Substituting four tablespoons of buttermilk for the yogurt is also an excellent sunburn treatment.

For dry skin, grind a carrot with a few almonds, and add enough tomato juice to form a paste. Apply it to the face and leave it on for about 20 minutes, then wash off.

Tomato juice mixed with honey is also a great mask for all skin types. Use it on your face and neck, and wash off after about 15 minutes.

When youve completed your treatment, apply a good shielding lotion. Its also good for any skin type, and will protect against damage from the elements, and lock in the moisture needed to keep your skin looking good and keep you looking like a hot tomato.

Read Santa Clara marks tenth anniversary

Saturday, September 10, 2005

Santa Clara, California, USA. The adult literacy program Read Santa Clara marked its tenth anniversary today with a gathering of program participants, staff, and supporters from the community. Read Santa Clara trains volunteer tutors and matches them with adult learners who wish to build their literacy skills.

In the presentation, program staff and supporters reviewed the program’s history and growth, honored long-time participants, and looked toward the future.

Santa Clara Mayor Patricia Mahan spoke at the gathering, noting, “Read Santa Clara joins people who need to learn with people who need to teach, and what a powerful combination that is.” She added, “I think adult literacy is so important.”

Program coordinators estimate that tutors volunteered some 5000 hours last year. City Manager Jennifer Sparacino estimates, “That’s worth about $100,000 per year in volunteer time.”

Learners also spoke about what Read Santa Clara meant to them. Raymond Moreno said, “I hope it stays for another ten, twenty, thirty years, because we need it.” Juan Velasquez said, “My life has changed a lot…I did many things I could not have done without help.” And Ike Moore said, “To be able to express myself…What a gift!”

The Halifax equity release scheme or as it is officially called by the Halifax, Retirement Home Plan is an interest only mortgage that is available to retirement people. With an interest only mortgage the outstanding balance always remains the same throughout and you make monthly payments of interest to the lender.

With traditional roll-up equity release you do not make any repayments of interest but the interest is being rolled up, meaning the outstanding loan is growing all the time. Typically, with current interest rates the loan will double every 12 years or so, this means that if you borrowed ?10,000 in 12 year’s time you would owe ?20,000.

For those retirees that can afford the monthly repayments from their pensions or state benefits then the Halifax equity release plan makes perfect sense. Oddly, the plan is not available from the Halifax themselves; you have to seek advice from a specialist equity release broker. Getting advice is vital for this type of plan as the consequences of getting it wrong can be very costly and maybe cannot be put right during your lifetime.

Does Halifax equity release plan require a repayment vehicle?

The simple answer to this is NO it does not. As the Halifax equity release plan is an interest only mortgage for pensioners, no form of repayment is required. This is one of the unique features of the plan.

Your individual mortgage with the Halifax equity release scheme is allocated a term of 40 years, this should be ample to run for the rest of your life. In contrast to traditional interest only mortgages where the term allocated is generally a maximum of 25 years, the 40 years allocated should mean you will die prior to the term ending.

Can I pay off the Halifax equity release mortgage early?

Yes you can. You will, however, need to check that you do not have any early exit charges on the rate that you chose.

ANZACs remembered ninety years after assault on Gallipoli

Monday, April 25, 2005

Australians and New Zealanders throughout the world stood still for their national war memorial days in remembrance of the failed Australian and New Zealand Army Corps — ANZAC — attack on Gallipoli, Turkey that began on 25 April 1915. The fateful attack was designed to end the First World War more quickly by creating a supply line to Russia. A hundred-thousand died in the battle, remembered every year as ANZAC Day by both nations.

The British-directed battle of Gallipoli is often seen as the defining moment in the ‘birth’ of Australia and New Zealand. With New Zealand Prime Minister Helen Clark saying “For New Zealand as for Australia it was at Gallipoli that our young nations came of age.” [1]. This being the 90th anniversary of the attack, Clark, Australian Prime Minister John Howard and Britain’s Prince Charles are all at Gallipoli to remember that fateful campaign.

Some controversy has been created about Australian Prime Minister John Howard not attending the New Zealand ceremony at Chunuk Bair on the Gallipoli Peninsula. This has upset many people as it is a break in a tradition that the Prime Ministers attend the ceremonies of both countries.

Triple limb-reattachment fails – boy loses foot

Tuesday, April 5, 2005Terry Vo, the 10-year old Australian boy who had two hands and a foot reattached by surgeons after losing them in an accident, has had to have the foot re-amputated. He will be given a prosthetic foot in its place.

The operation to re-attach three limbs was thought to have been a first – but was ultimately unsuccessful, with the foot having died inside, and receiving insufficient blood supply following the surgery to reattach it.

“That would lead to the small muscles in the foot actually constricting, the toes bending over and a deformed …. foot that is sort of clawed over and doesn’t have good sensation,” said plastic surgeon, Mr Robert Love today, on Australia’s ABC Radio.

“Even if you can get all of that to survive, he [would be] worse off than having had an amputation.”

“What is very disappointing is that for the first two days after [the operation] the foot looked absolutely magnificent,” he said.

Terry’s hands were healing well, said the surgeon. The prosthetic foot would allow him to walk normally, since his knee was intact.

Illinois man charged in Facebook harassment case
Posted by , No Comments

Monday, February 8, 2010

A man from the Naperville, Illinois, United States area has been accused of allegedly threatening to kill his ex-girlfriend and her current boyfriend via messages posted on her Facebook account.

Nineteen-year-old Christopher J. Bensfield was arrested Jan. 28 at his home in unincorporated DuPage County near the far west-central part of Naperville. He is being held on a $12,500 bond at the DuPage County Jail in Wheaton. He is scheduled to appear at the DuPage County Circuit Court on a felony charge of harassment via electronic communication. Police Sergeant Gregg Bell said the ex-girlfriend, a Naperville-resident, asked Bensfield to stop sending the messages many times before she submitted printed copies of the threatening messages to Naperville police.

Court records indicate Bensfield is already on probation after pleading guilty last September to possession of a controlled substance. He was arrested in August 2008 after disobeying a stop sign in Naperville. Police searched his car and found marijuana and drug paraphernalia. This was the third time Benfield had been arrested for having marijuana since April 2007, when drugs were found in his possession at Naperville Central High School. Last October, a judge issued a fine and required him to join the DuPage County Sheriff’s Work Alternative Program. He has also received five tickets within three months in 2008 for driving violations, including speeding, driving without insurance, transportation of an open alcohol container, and driving too fast for conditions.

Bensfield’s mother also has an order of protection against him. Ms. Bensfield stated that he asked her for money in late December; he then broke into her home in Naperville’s far southeast-side, punching holes in the walls and breaking various items before leaving. Christopher was arrested Dec. 29 and faced a misdemeanor charge of criminal damage to property. He “suffers from bipolar disorder and has not been taking his medication,” according to information the Naperville Daily Herald has received from Ms. Bensfield.

A Review Of Origen Cigars By J Fuego

By Eliz Guide

The first thought that most people have when they first see a J Fuego Origen cigar is that it is really a rather unattractive stick. The explanation for its appearance dates back to the old methods of testing tobacco leafs. This was something that was rather old school but effective nonetheless.

It involved using a raw leaf to hold the tobacco, and it was placed in the middle of the leaf as this was the only part of it that would hold. This left a stick that was rather on the plump side in the middle and skinnier on both ends.

The smoke was then actually lit and smoked to see if it was fit to send on to the rollers to be produced. This was a testing method from generations ago, and that is how this smoke came to be.

The J Fuego Origen cigar is a more natural type of smoke that is presented in its purest form. The founder had allowed a friend to try one, and it was suggested that he offer them as part of his line and so it came to pass. So when you first see it, you will describe it as being extremely rough and rustic with lots of veins.

J Fuego Origen cigars come with a precut end. There is little distinction between the head and the foot. However, once you light it, you will discover an ample amount of smoke regardless of what it looks like.

The ash that these cigars produce is an extremely thick ash that is sort of salt and pepper colored, and it holds very well.

There really is no need to break a J Fuego Origen cigar down by thirds as the taste is consistent from start to finish and reminiscent of others in the Origen line of other sizes.

All reviewers comment that the look of the stick shouldn’t fool you for a second. If you try to judge it by its appearance, then once you light it you will find that you were completely mistaken.

This one, as with all other offerings by the founder, offers up everything that you could ever want in a smoke and so much more. The flavor is described as being full of a toasty flavoring as well as lots of earthiness. This is definitely a medium bodied to full bodied stick that offers up everything you would expect from a premium cigar.

So when you look at the ugly, dark and oddly shaped smoke that is before you, remember that you cannot judge a book by its cover or a smoke by its exterior. This one packs a lot of flavor into what was once just another way to test tobaccos before proceeding with production.

Amazingly, he was able to use this old world technique to produce something that leaves you completely stunned, satisfied, and coming back for more. They are hard to find, so make sure you make the effort to find them today.
