Internet posting says al-Qaeda plans dirty bomb attack in New York City

Saturday, August 11, 2007

A posting on the internet has stated that al-Qaeda is planning a dirty bomb attack on New York City, New York (NYC) in the United States.

In a statement to the press, NYC police stated that the posting was an “unverified radiological threat” against New York City. Police also stated that the city’s threat level will remain at “orange” and will not be changed. NYC police have also stepped up security at bridges, tunnels and subways as a precaution.

Debka.com or DEBKAfile, an Israeli website, was claiming the that they picked up the threat by “a rush of electronic chatter on al Qaeda sites Thursday, Aug. 8.” DEBKA also claims that one of the threats states that “trucks loaded with radio-active material [will be used] against America’s biggest city and financial nerve center.”

The site also claims that other cities such as Miami, Florida and Los Angeles, California as targets for dirty bomb attacks.

No date or time has been reported for the attack. On August 2, a terrorist advertisement posted on the internet by the As-Sahab propaganda campaign for al-Qaeda, warned of a coming “big surprise.” No date was specified for that claim either.

Caravan Security; How to Keep Your Caravan Safe

by

Guy Anderson

With almost half a million touring caravans in the UK, its not surprising that theft of and theft from caravans is a massive problem. In fact, both professional thieves and opportunist favour caravans to cars as their chosen prey!

Not only are they easy to steal, but if broken into often contain a large amount of personal effects and appliances. For a great many caravan owners, the caravan is actually a second home, with items of such great personal value, they simply cannot be replaced. Many caravan owners resort to fitting a basic DIY security system, which unfortunately seldom defeats anyone and once the wires to the siren are cut, or the leisure battery is disconnected, are useless. The use of mechanical security devices like wheel clamps and hitch locks aren’t much better; only deterring the amateur thief from actually taking the caravan, but not even creating much of a hurdle to the professional thief and leaving the contents vulnerable. As for physical caravan security locks; they may provide peace of mind with their very obvious presence, but they are by no means much of a hurdle for the professional thief, nor will they protect the contents. In recent years MINDER was introduced to security tag caravans manufactured after 2001, which although is a step in the right direction, is only of benefit if a stolen caravan is recovered at a later stage. Ultimately, as with any other vehicle, if you want a solid line of defence, an alarm is the only sensible option. Perhaps one of the best selling and most effective products available actually incorporates a battery back-up which provides power after the leisure battery runs down, of up to 14 days. This is perfect for caravans that are parked or stored elsewhere. It is also possible to add a text messaging device to the alarm which will not only send you a text message if the alarm goes off, but will also text you if the leisure battery drops below 10.5v. The caravan security alarm itself incorporates a wireless infra red motion sensor, which will detect anyone entering the caravan via a window or skylight. Being wireless there is no need to run wires everywhere, which are often unsightly and the need to remove trim, carpets and cupboards is eliminated. It also protects the entrance with a magnetic reed switch. Another piece of good news is that owners can have their alarm armed while they sleep, or if they leave a pet inside. Added to the alarm are two more sensors; the first is attached to the steady leg, designed to detect it being raised or lowered while the alarm is armed and the second is attached to the electrical hook-up. Thus, the caravan cannot be entered or moved without the alarm being triggered. As with most things in life where a tradesman is required, the effectiveness of this caravan security alarm (as with any other) will ultimately lie in the quality and skill of the person that installs it. Fitted correctly by an approved and Thatcham recognised installer, this system will protect both the caravan and its contents for many years to come.

New York Times to start charging for access to web news

Friday, March 18, 2011

The challenge now is to put a price on our work without walling ourselves off from the global network …

The New York Times announced on Thursday that it will start charging for full access to NYTimes.com, its online version. Beginning March 28, U.S. visitors who do not subscribe to the print edition will be allowed access to 20 articles a month. A digital subscription to the website will be required to read additional content.

The fee plan for Canadians is already in effect, allowing the NYT to “fine-tune the customer experience”, according to the announcement.

Unlimited access to articles will continue to be free for those users reaching the Times through links from search engines, blogs, and social media like Facebook and Twitter. The NYTimes.com home page and individual section front pages will continue be freely accessible.

The NYT unsuccessfully tried a pay wall six years ago. Due to declining profits and readership of its print edition, it is ready to try again.

According to comScore, a marketing research company that measures online traffic, NYTimes.com had 31.4 million individual visitors in February. It is the most-read newspaper site in the world, reported The Guardian.

“The challenge now is to put a price on our work without walling ourselves off from the global network, to make sure we continue to engage with the widest possible audience”, wrote Arthur Sulzberger Jr., NYT company chairman.

By Mark Hyman, M.D.

A powerful new drug — one that you already take every day — may help cure all chronic illnesses.

What am I talking about?

Just take a look at the end of your fork.

It’s called food.

Although there’s no magic bullet to prevent, treat, cure, and reverse most chronic illnesses, a growing body of research suggests that food is the most powerful drug we have to do just that.

Yet most medical schools never taught physicians about the two most important things we need to know — nutrition and the role of the environment and toxins in our health.

My goal is to help my patients heal and get better and I have no particular allegiance to any type of treatment — whether it is a drug, surgery, radiation, or new procedure.

But time after time, I find the most powerful, fastest acting, and most dramatic results come from using food as our main medicine.

I use food for healing, not because I believe it is better to use natural treatments than to use drugs, but because it works better and only has positive side effects.

These days, an increasing number of doctors agree.

This June, I will give the keynote speech on the history of nutrition and medicine at a course in Baltimore called ‘Food as Medicine,’ sponsored by the Center for Mind Body Medicine.

This ground-breaking course brings nutritional science to healthcare professionals in a digestible, practical, hands-on format.

The course was created more than seven years ago by Dr. Jim Gordon, who was the chairman of the White House Commission on Complementary and Alternative Medicine. He was recently honored as one of the five pioneers of integrative medicine by the Bravewell Collaborative and has been a leader in mind-body medicine, nutrition, and healing for nearly 40 years.

For the last seven years, Dr. Gordon has trained hundreds of practitioners, including faculty from more than 50 medical schools, which are now including this knowledge of how to use food as medicine in their curriculum.

That’s a lot different from the early days.

Years ago, I attended a food-related meeting with the nutritionists, doctors, chefs, and owners of Canyon Ranch, where I worked. I emphasized that I believed the future of nutrition and the culinary arts must recognize the therapeutic value of food to heal chronic illnesses.

As soon as the words ‘food is medicine’ left my lips, I was under attack.

The chief chef vehemently argued that food is only about good taste, not good health.

Luckily, this outdated view is changing.

An increasing number of food services, restaurants, and other institutions now recognize the healing power of food and are including healing foods as part of their offerings.

The ‘Food as Medicine’ course addresses things that most practitioners never learn in medical school. These include the scientific basis of nutrition as a therapeutic tool, how we can eat in a sustainable way, and how the health of our planet has directly affected the health of our food and the health of our bodies.

The course stresses areas such as nutrigenomics, the idea that food is information that speaks to our genes and activates messages that create health or disease.

It also explores the role of stress, nutrition, hormone balance, the health of our gut, and the importance of detoxification and food.

The course is based on the basic tenets of Functional Medicine but is broken down into simple, practical tools practitioners can use every day with their patients.

It addresses specific nutritional approaches for conditions such as cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, ADD, asthma, allergies, autoimmune diseases, fibromyalgia, and adrenal, thyroid, and neurodegenerative problems. We also teach practitioners about the use of nutritional supplements and cutting edge laboratory tests.

We also increase self-awareness — and make it fun — with food demonstrations and organic meals.

The faculty this year is amazing.

They include:

— James Joseph, a leading antioxidant researcher from Tufts University

— Collin Fogarty Draper, an expert in nutrigenomics

— David Ludwig, head of the obesity program at Children’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School

— Gerard Mullin, from John Hopkins Medical School

— Michael Lumpkin, a professor at Georgetown University Medical School

— Many other distinguished speakers

Kathie Swift — the nutrition director of The UltraWellness Center — is the course director.

The course will benefit health practitioners, including physicians, osteopaths, medical school faculty, nurses, nurse practitioners, registered dietitians and nutritionists, physician assistants, community healthcare practitioners, psychologists, mental health professionals, and other health professionals.

According to Dr. Walter Willett, chairman of the Department of Nutrition at the Harvard School of Public Health and one of the leading researchers in the world in nutrition, ‘It is time to end the confusion. ‘Food as Medicine’ presents the best current scientific evidence for physicians, nutritionists, and other health professionals who want to counsel patients and teach students.’

But the course is open to everyone.

So I encourage all of you to tell your healthcare practitioners about it — and consider attending yourself. This course provides tools and information to use the most powerful weapon against disease in the 21st century, your fork.

Remember what Hippocrates said:

‘Leave your potions in the chemist’s crucible if you can handle your patients with food.’

About the Author: Mark Hyman, M.D. is a pioneer in functional medicine, practicing physician and best-selling author. A sneak preview of his book “The UltraSimple Diet” is available. See The UltraWellness Blog for more on

California releases search warrant for Wells Fargo bank on identity theft

Saturday, October 22, 2016

The California Department of Justice on Wednesday released the warrant and affidavit of a criminal investigation of the Wells Fargo bank. The State of California served the warrant on October 5 to search the San Francisco headquarters of Wells Fargo for felonious activities related to identity theft.

The warrant said property to be seized at the bank’s San Francisco headquarters was related to the unauthorized creation of accounts by Wells Fargo employees including the names of individuals for the accounts; account information and fees; the names of employees and their managers who created accounts without the consent of the Wells Fargo customers in question; and all communications including emails referencing the unauthorised accounts.

California Attorney General Kamala Harris’s criminal probe is part of an increasing list of officials nationwide questioning the business practices of Wells Fargo such as California State Treasurer John Chiang who announced a one-year suspension of State investment with the bank on September 28; Illinois State Treasurer Mike Frerichs followed suit with a year-long ban on October 3; and Democratic United States Senators Bob Menendez of New Jersey, Jeff Merkley of Oregon, and Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts, who wrote to the U.S. Security Exchanges Commission (SEC) suggesting investigation on September 29.

Iraqi insurgents intercepted drone feeds using widely available software

Saturday, December 19, 2009

United States defense officials acknowledged that Iraqi insurgents successfully intercepted live video feeds from U.S. MQ-1 Predator unmanned aerial vehicles with widely available software. The story broke on Thursday in the Wall Street Journal with a defense official, anonymously, informing them it is an old problem, which has already been fixed.

The Journal says U.S. military personnel in Iraq discovered the problem late last year when they seized a Shi’ite militant’s laptop containing drone video feeds.

Senior defense and intelligence officials say insurgents were able to take advantage of an unprotected communications link in the systems of the remotely-piloted aircraft. The insurgents used software that is available online and costs about $26.

While U.S. defense officials say the issue has been fixed, the Journal quoted senior intelligence officials as saying it was not yet clear if the problem had been completely resolved.

It was developed to intercept music, photos, video, programs and other content that other users download from the Internet — no military data or other commercial data, only free legal content.

U.S. officials say there is no evidence that militants had been able to take control of the drones. But the intercepted video feeds could show where the planes are operating.

The Journal also reported that U.S. drone feeds have also been intercepted in Afghanistan.

Officials say the U.S. government has known about a flaw in the drone communication system since the NATO intervention in Bosnia in the 1990s. At the time, the military assumed local adversaries would not know how to exploit it.

The report says fighters in Iraq used software programs such as one called “SkyGrabber” from the Russian company SkySoftware, which is designed to intercept data transmitted by satellite Internet.

The Journal quoted one of the program’s developers, Andrew Solonikov, as saying it was designed to download legal content — such as music and video — and that it was never intended to intercept military data. Solonikov said in a email to the paper, “It was developed to intercept music, photos, video, programs and other content that other users download from the Internet — no military data or other commercial data, only free legal content.”

Reviewing The Necessary Steps For Concrete Demolition In Minnesota

byAlma Abell

In Minnesota, land developers need demolition services to manage existing structures. These services allow them to remove all remnants of the existing building and clear the land for further projects. However, these projects require an advance understanding of legal requirements. A local contractor provides Concrete Demolition in Minnesota for these land developers today.

Acquiring the Right Permits

The contractor understands the necessary legal requirements for the demolition project. They must begin by acquiring the necessary permits to perform these services. The permits allow them to use heavy-duty equipment in residential or commercial areas. They also provide approval for the demolition team to utilize explosives when necessary. The contractor acquires these permits on behalf of the land developer and takes responsibility for any injuries that may occur during the project.

Notifying the Public

The demolition team is required by law to issue a public notice in advance. These notices are placed in the local newspaper to make residents aware of the possible dangers presented. It also indicates if the roadways around the project are closed during the project. This presents them with conclusive information to prevent the possibility of accidents and personal injuries.

Demolishing the Property

The team evaluates the property and ensures that it is clear on the day of the project. They level the property according to federal regulations and manage the full demolition. This includes clearing off the property at different stages of the project. This prevents the possibility of injuries for their staff and passersby.

Waste Management Requirements for the Project

Select demolition teams provide their own waste management services. When this is the case, they situate dumpsters around the work site to remove debris appropriately. This reduces the risk of unstable conditions that could lead to injuries.

In Minnesota, land developers acquire helpful services through demolition teams. These teams present them with effective and safe removal of buildings that are no longer viable. They demolition the property according to state and federal regulations. They also remove all waste products during different stages of the project. Land developers who need concrete demolition in Minnesota should contact Nitti Rolloff & Demolition Services Inc for more details now.
