  • “Hotel development proposal could displace Buffalo, NY business owners” — Wikinews, February 17, 2006

Saturday, March 4, 2006

Buffalo, New York —The Common Council requested on Tuesday that a picture be found on what many thought was the site of a previous hotel.

The Proposed Elmwood Village Hotel would be placed on the intersection of Elmwood and Forest. It was suspected by residents and business owners in the area that hotel once stood in the same spot.

The Elmwood Village hotel is a proposed development by Savarino Construction Services Corp. In order for the project to proceed, at least five buildings (1119-1121 Elmwood) would need to be demolished. All five houses are currently occupied by businesses and residents.

After some research, a freelance journalist writing for Wikinews was able to determine that there was never a hotel on the proposed Elmwood Village Hotel site. However; there was a temporary hotel located on the northeast corner of Elmwood and Forest.

Buffalo was the host of the Pan-American Exposition from May 1 until November 2, 1901. It was a fair designed to feature the latest in technology, including electricity. There was a midway, athletic events, and had African, Eskimo, and Mexican villages. However; what is likely the most famous event that took place at the exposition was the assassination of then President William McKinley on September 6, 1901. He was shot by Leon Czolgosz just outside the Temple of Music and died eight days later while in the home of John Milburn on Delaware Avenue in Buffalo. Just a short time later, Theodore Roosevelt was inaugurated on September 14, 1901 at the Wilcox House on Delaware Avenue in Buffalo. Nearly eight million people attended the exposition.

During that time several hotels and rooming houses were built around the exposition including The Elmwood at 717 Elmwood, the Hotel Elmhurst at Forest and Lincoln Parkway, Hotel Gibbs 1005-1021 Elmwood, the R. Palmerton Merritt at 441 Forest and The Norman at 422 Forest. None of these hotels or rooming houses exist today.

Probably the most famous hotel that was built during the exposition was the Statler’s Pan-American Hotel built by Ellsworth Milton Statler A freelance journalist writing for Wikinews has obtained the only known reproduction photo of the hotel [pictured at the top]. The hotel stood on the northeast corner of Elmwood and Forest Avenues in Buffalo, had 2,100 sleeping rooms and accommodations for 5,000. At the time, the Statler was the largest hotel [based on the number of rooms] ever constructed. It was also the largest temporary hotel. It was three stories high, plastered on the inside, made mostly of wood and was covered with ornamental staff on the outside, which made it semi-fireproof. Every room was an outside room and was well lighted and ventilated. It was located within one block of the exposition’s main entrance.

The Statler was built for only one thing, the exposition. Work began in 1900 and finished just before the beginning of the exposition. When the exposition ended in November, the hotel was taken down.

Maps from 1894 show that there was no hotel, let alone any buildings or houses on the intersection. However; research did show that the homes 1119-1121 Elmwood, the buildings that would be demolished to build the Elmwood Village Hotel, were built sometime before 1915 but were not on the intersection prior to 1902.

Based on research conducted at the Buffalo Historical Society, it was concluded that between the years of 1890 and 1902, no other major hotel existed in the area. In fact, research had shown that almost every hotel built in the area, existed only during the time of the exposition.

Research also indicated a hotel or a rooming house at 1089 Elmwood around 1901-1903. The only known name of the hotel was the John C. Hill Hotel. The hotel was in the house now called the Atwater House. The house was the first house to be built on the east side of the block.

The Atwater House is currently vacant and owner Pano Georgiadis wants to demolish it to expand his restaurant. The house was built by 1894 and the original owner and builder of the house is currently unknown. Its earliest known occupant was Edward Atwater who in 1862 founded the oil refinery company of Atwater & Hawes in Buffalo. The site of this company was recently uncovered in the Canal District during an archeological dig.

At the moment, current research does not show any connection between the two men.

The exposition was a commercial failure and what profit Statler did make on the hotel, went to build another temporary hotel for the 1904 St. Louis Exhibition. That hotel was successful and the profit made from it was used to build the first permanent Statler Hotel at 107 Delaware Avenue in Buffalo. The hotel is no longer in operation, but small offices are currently operating in parts of the building.

Cardiac arrest is one of the most common death cause nowadays.

It has only a 10.6% average survival rate. In the United States, approximately 395,000 cases of cardiac arrests take place out of the hospitals every year.

Many time we get to hear that someone got cardiac arrest in the bathroom. Here, we will discuss the cause of cardiac arrests happen in the bathroom. To maintain your heart health you can consult with any cardiologist in Chennai.

What is a cardiac arrest?

If the heart starts malfunctioning and stops beating unexpectedly, that is called cardiac arrest. In this situation, the heart fails to pump the blood to the other parts of the body as well as the brain. The heart muscles are failed to contract and expand so the blood can not flow. If the heat flow to the heart is blocked due to any blockage on the artery heart attack takes place. As a result of the heart attack, cardiac arrest may happen just after a heart attack. So heart attack and cardiac arrest are connected.

Why do cardiac arrests happen in the bathroom?

It is found that cardiac arrest has occurred in the bathroom very often. Which is not a coincidence, but there is some scientific cause behind it. Here we will discuss some of them.

  • Abrupt changes in Blood pressure

Talking bath in the morning is a risk factor for people with high blood pressure. To avoid cardiac arrests, the temperature of the water and environment should be on the count.

Sudden exposure to cold water cause sympathetic impulse, which causes a rapid fall in the temperature of our skin and also leads to high blood pressure. This abrupt changes in blood pressure reduce the blood flow to the heart as a result of this the heart failed to get enough oxygen. This may cause a cardiac arrest and heart attack in the bathroom.

  • Toilet Strain

The wrong posture of sitting for waste elimination is another reason for cardiac arrests in the bathroom. In seating position repeated and intense Valsalva Maneuvers is needed in order to empty the bowels. This excessive strain majorly affects the cardiovascular system causing insufficient blood flow in the heart. It leads to cardiac arrests. Squatting position is always better than sitting position as it requires less strain.

  • Sequenced Bath

According to Ayurveda, there is a proper way of taking a bath. If you want to take a head bath do not pour water on your head first. We all have a tendency to pour a shower or a bucket of water from our head, doing so makes blood from your entire body rushes to your head and the body has to adjust its temperature very quickly as we are warm-blooded. This can cause capillary or artery breakage, which leads to cardiac arrests. So pour water on your body first then on your head. Persons with high blood pressure must pay more and more attention to the sequence of bathing.

Though accidents like heart attacks and cardiac arrests are really uncertain and can happen any time anywhere, it can be life-saving if we take precautions as much as we can. In order to avoid any one of the heart attack or cardiac arrest, there is a lot of things we need to take care of. From proper diet to exercise, enough sleep, less stress, healthy lifestyle all of them are equally important for a good heart. All the above-mentioned things will help you to avoid cardiac arrest from an unexpected cause. If you diagnosed with any kind of heart blockage consult with a cardiac surgeon in Chennai.

Original Story
  • “Hotel development proposal could displace Buffalo, NY business owners” — Wikinews, February 17, 2006

In February of 2006, the Savarino Services Construction Corp. proposed the construction of a seven million dollar hotel on Elmwood and Forest Avenues in Buffalo, New York. In order for the hotel to be built, at least five properties containing businesses and residents would have to be destroyed. It was not certain whether the properties were owned by Savarino or by the landlord Hans Mobius. The hotel was designed by Karl Frizlen of the Frizlen Group, and is planned to be a franchise of the Wyndham Hotels group.

Elmwood Avenue is known by the community as a popular shopping center, and Nancy Pollina of Don Apparel (who is “utterly against” the construction) claims it’s the only reason why students from Buffalo State College leave campus. Additionally, Michael Faust of Mondo Video said he did not want to “get kicked out of here [his video store property].”

In 1995, a Walgreens was proposed to be built on the same land, but Walgreens later withdrew its request for a variance because of pressure from the community. More recently, Pano Georgiadis tried to get the rights to demolish the Atwater House next to his restaurant on Elmwood Avenue, but was denied a permit due to the property’s historical value. He has since been an opponent to the hotel construction.

In the process of debating the hotel, it was thought that a hotel had previously existed on the proposed site, however; research done at the Buffalo and Erie County Historical Society had shown that no hotel had previously existed on the site.

Rail manslaughter charges are dropped in Hatfield, England

Rail manslaughter charges are dropped in Hatfield, England
Posted by , No Comments

Thursday, July 14, 2005

Charges against the five rail bosses accused of manslaughter on four people who died in the Hatfield, England train crash, have been dropped at the Old Bailey.

Alistair Cook, 50, Sean Fugill, 50, Keith Lea, 53, and two executives from Balfour Beatty — Anthony Walker, 46, and Nicholas Jeffries, 53 — all denied the manslaughter charges. A charge of corporate manslaughter has also been dropped against the engineering firm Belfour Beatty.

But the five men and their employers, Balfour Beatty and Railtrack, still face health and safety charges under the Health and Safety at Work Act.

Four people were killed and many more were injured when a high speed train travelling from Leeds to London derailed just outside Hatfield on 17 October 2000. An investigation after the crash found that a cracked section of rail caused the train to come off the tracks.

After five months on trial, the judge Mr Justice Mackay told the jury to find the men not guilty, saying:

“It is not open to you to convict any of the six defendants on charges of manslaughter”

He added: “I must ask you to accept my ruling, which does not affect one way or the other the important decisions you will have to make when considering verdicts on the health and safety counts.”

Mr Justice Mackay made the decision after reviewing the evidence and listening to submissions.

The collapse of yet another high-profile corporate case will more than likely put pressure for changes to current laws to make it easier to prosecute in corporate manslaughter cases. Work on new corporate manslaughter legislation has been under way for more than a decade in response to the problems encountered in bringing successful prosecutions. The latest proposals would criminalise gross management failure and the government has promised legislation before the end of next year.

Devon prison rooftop protest ends peacefully

Devon prison rooftop protest ends peacefully

Monday, July 3, 2006

A rooftop protest at a Devon (UK) jail has ended peacefully after almost 28 hours.

The protest, involving 10 inmates, at HMP Channings Wood started after prisoners complained their meals were being prepared by sex offenders.

The category C training prison in Newton Abbot, Devon presently holds 663 inmates, with units dedicated to sex offenders and drug offenders.

A Home Office spokesman said: “The rooftop protest at HMP Channings Wood has ended peacefully with no injuries to prisoners or prison staff.”

The Prison Service has so far refused to confirm the extent of the damage done during the protest, but it is believed to run into thousands of pounds with glass being smashed and paving slabs being torn up.

Earlier on Monday afternoon three prisoners had already given up their protest, leaving ten remaining on the roof. They eventually came down at around 6:30 p.m. BST after speaking with trained negotiators.

The Prison Service has launched an internal enquiry into the protest.
