Full election 2005 coverage.
Background:
Wikipedia, Wikinews’ sibling project, has in-depth background articles on:

At 21:00 UTC yesterday, the polls closed in the United Kingdom general election. With only a handful of seats left to declare, Labour reached the 324 seats necessary to form a majority in the House of Commons, with the result in Corby at 03:28 UTC.

The Conservative Party remains the Opposition party, with the Liberal Democrats being the third largest party in the House of Commons.

Both the Labour victory and the reduced majority were widely predicted by opinion polls before the election. The BBC/ITV exit poll predicted Tony Blair a majority of 66 seats, which continued to be forecast as the final result as declarations were made. Some early results in the north-east indicated a bigger swing away from Labour than the opinion polls had been suggesting, but later results confirmed the survey.

Overall, there has been no clear swing in votes between the parties. Many seats have seen large swings, but in many different directions, with perhaps the national swing of 5% from Conservative to Liberal Democrat being the most dramatic with many much larger local swings.

The new Labour government has been elected with the lowest proportion of the popular vote ever – just 35.2%. However, the Tories only gained 32.3% barely more than the last election in 2001. The biggest winners in terms of popular vote were the Liberal Democrats led by Charles Kennedy, who secured 22.1% of the vote. With 645 of 646 seats declared so far, this has given the Liberal Democrats another 11 seats in Parliament, but the Conservatives have gained another 33 seats. Labour have lost 47.

As a result, Tony Blair is forecast to be governing with a majority of 66 in the new Parliament. However, on some major issues such as university fees and anti-terror laws, many Labour MPs have voted against their leadership. With a greatly reduced majority, Tony Blair may be forced to water down many more controversial policies in order to guarantee their passage through the House of Commons. Speaking on BBC News, commentator David Dimbleby pointed out the uncertainty of such possibilities, and noted that a majority of 66 was larger than the 43 seat majority won by Margaret Thatcher in the United Kingdom general election, 1979.

One surprise vote was the election of ex-Labour member George Galloway in Bethnal Green & Bow, in East London. The area has a very high number of Muslims in it, and Galloway moved from his home in Scotland in order to gain their anti-war support. He ousted Britain’s only second female black MP, Oona King, in the process.

Robert Kilroy-Silk, the ex-talkshow host who was sacked from the BBC after writing racist newspaper articles, only came fourth in his election in Erewash in the East Midlands. His party, Veritas, which fielded 65 candidates across the country, stood for withdrawing from the European Union and blocking immigration.

Turnout in the general election is 60%, up 2% on 2001.

Because the world is moving into one that is full of technology, more people are having to take courses to help them succeed in job applications and improved career advancement. Microsoft boot camps have proven to be one of the most effective learning methods in the technology arena, because they are specifically designed for IT professional applications.

You are able to find some boot camps available free of charge and delivered through email correspondence. This is typically not an a great method of learning. The type of boot camps designed for rapid and effective learning do cost, but you get hands on training with an accredited Microsoft Trainer and usually end with a Microsoft Certification exam, which is accepted by many work places. Certification training combined with real work experience will help professionals gain better positions.

Boot camps are technology specific that way IT professionals can target specific points of interest. A good example is the boot camp for Microsoft Exchange email server system. This is something that is used with many companies, as a way to offer fee-for email accounts, which look more professional than using sites such as Yahoo! and Google Mail.

This boot camp makes it possible for people in the IT world to become specialists in the Exchange server. Everything is done through hands on classes allowing students to learn about the server in a real-world manner. The Boot camp method of learning has proven to be one of the most effective methods of quickly learning and retaining information, because it implements real-world examples providing actual experience that they will need to secure the first job after wards.

Professional Boot camps provide an actual Microsoft Certification exam at the end of the course which everyone has to do. Boot camp learning provides one of the highest certification exam pass rates and once the exam has been passed, the students receive Microsoft certifications, which are accredited and accepted by most workplaces. However, you will need to check to make sure that your qualification is accepted for the role that you are apply for.

The exams can be either be done by an independent company or the course provider depending on the providers qualifications. This makes sure that everyone is learning the exact same thing and is tested on the same merits. This is something that universities do not offer since it is the lecturers that set the papers. The tests are done in separate centers all around the country and it is possible to register at a center close to you.

The problem is that there are new releases and upgrades on a regular basis. It means that technology is continually changing and it can be difficult for students to stay on top of the latest release. Its essential that you know which specific course is right for you.

The training available through Microsoft boot camps is targeted, effective and geared toward IT professionals. Boot camps include presentations from lecturers and labs to help with gaining practical experience. There are also discussions that are held in class, which help to expand the knowledge and find solutions to many common problems and one practice exam is available per person, which will help prep you for the actual Microsoft certification exam.

An interview with gossip columnist Michael Musto on the art of celebrity journalism

Sunday, October 7, 2007

There are two things one can expect on a trip to see Michael Musto at the offices of the Village Voice: a 20-minute round-trip wait for the elevator and rapid fire answers from one of the most recognizable gossip columnists in the United States. Musto, in addition to his appearances on Countdown with Keith Olbermann and the E! network, has been writing his column for the Voice since 1984. He has recently compiled the best of them in a book released this year titled, La Dolce Musto: Writings by the World’s Most Outrageous Columnist. He was Carrie Bradshaw, replete with a prodigious use of puns, before Sex in the City was a thought. His column is a romp through his life, spats and opinions on socio-political issues. As David Thigpen of the Chicago Tribune wrote, Musto is “a funny and caustic satirist who masquerades as a gossip and nightlife columnist.”

Musto, a Columbia University graduate, is a rarity in today’s celebrity world: he is accessible. He often corresponds with his readers and his public functions are a mix of parties, nightclubs, academic lectures, university panels and film premieres.

He is friendly and frank, and he welcomes people to join him in his world (“I just got a message that Michael Lucas died!” he says staring wide-eyed at his phone; the message turned out to be false). Wikinews reporter David Shankbone spoke with Musto about his life and his relationship to the world of celebrity journalism. And he did not hold back.

Ahmadinejad sends letter to George W. Bush

Tuesday, May 9, 2006For the first time in three decades, direct and at least partially public diplomatic communication will commence between the United States (US) and Iran. Iranian government spokesman Gholam-Hossein Elham said that Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has sent a letter to the U.S. president George W. Bush proposing “new solutions for getting out of international problems and the current fragile situation of the world”.

Mr Gholam-Hossein Elham did not say whether the letter mentioned the nuclear dispute, one of the diplomatic problems currently straining relations between Iran and the USA. This information arrived one day after the Iranian parliament announced that it might retract from the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) if Western pressure over its programme was to increase.

Differing reports have been made as to whether or not the letter will be made public, and if so, when. In its online report of 8 May 2006, 09:25 GMT, the BBC quoted Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Hamid Reza Asefi as saying that the contents of the letter would be made public once Bush had received it. The updated version of the report of 8 May 2006, 14:52 GMT, quotes Asefi as saying that the contents would be made public “at the right time”. An ABC report quoted Gholam-Hossein Elham as saying “it is not an open letter.”

Iran’s foreign affairs minister, Manouchehr Mottaki, delivered the letter to the United States’ interests section in the Swiss embassy in Tehran on Monday. The United States has not held diplomatic relations with Iran since the 1979 Iranian hostage crisis.

U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said “this letter isn’t it. This letter is not the place that one would find an opening to engage on the nuclear issue or anything of the sort.”

“It isn’t addressing the issues that we’re dealing with in a concrete way,” she added.

John R. Bolton, U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, also read the letter, saying, “I think it is typical of Iran that when major decisions are about to be taken … that they have tried to throw sand in the eyes of the proponents of the action. That’s what this may be.”

The letter has since been put on an official Iranian website, and on Tuesday, Ahmadinejad said “the letter to US President George Bush carries the Iranian nation’s views and comments on international issues as well as suggestions for resolving the many problems facing humanity.”

When you step into any one of Chinese colleges, you can find that there are various dressing styles. As most of the boys in China are not so keen in fashion, its hard to tell which style of dressing they are. However, things are different in Chinese girls. Every time you see a Chinese girl, you can easily tell the style of her dressing. Actually, the dressing styles, or we say China fashion trends of college girls can be divided into three categories. I will tell you one by one in the following part.

The most common one is Japanese style. The major feature of this kind of style is cute or we say kawaii in Japanese. If a college girl wears a t-shirt with a big hello kitty on it or a pink backpack just as the primary school kids, there is no doubt that shes following the Japanese style. The popularity of Japanese style is actually following the daily-better relationship between China and Japan. But the political issue is not our key point here. Not only because of the frequent cultural communication between China and Japan, but also because the Japanese culture is basically based on the traditional Chinese culture although we can see many innovative change here, like the miniskirts or sun-tops.

Then next style arises only in this decade along with the popular TV series. Obviously, the trend I mention here is the Korean one. Chinese even coined a local word Hanliu for this special fashion trend. We can use a key word to describe the Korean style: the Girl Next Door. How can we define the dressing of a girl lives next door? It always means that its comfortable, looking good but not so exaggerated as the Japanese style. Girls may carry the little elegant hand bag with them or wear the hairband with a bow on it. Instead of being sexy, girls in this style seem more accessible to others.

Last but not least, the western style. This trend has the longer history than the two we mentioned above, however, its not adopted by the majority of college girls in China. The major reason is that we Chinese girls have different builds from the western people. You can find that college girls who have preference for this style are mostly tall and thin like models. They wear super miniskirts to show their slim figures or huge coats to outstand their arrogance. Actually there is a minor trend thats not easily discovered by most people, the campus trend. Students in college are no longer required to wear uniforms which makes them cherish the memory of that dressing.. Thats why campus trend appeared. Its rooted in the western dressing style since they have the most beautiful uniforms for student in high schools.

China College dressing fashion is actually the combination of the three kinds of styles from different countries as I mentioned above. Next time if you have time, you could come to China and walking around in the Chinese Colleges, you will find it very different from yours.

Tuesday, July 17, 2007

Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania — Local caterers get ready for big business, as almost three thousand fans converge on the David L. Lawrence Convention Center over the Independence Day weekend for the world’s largest ever furry convention, Anthrocon 2007.

Many hope to renew acquaintances, or meet new friends. Others look to buy from dealers and artists, or show off new artwork or costumes. Some attend to make money, or even learn a thing or two. But one thing unites them: They’re all there to have fun.

Shooting at school leaves one dead in Tennessee, United States

Thursday, August 21, 2008

On Thursday, 15-year-old student, Ryan McDonald, was shot and killed. The shooting occurred at just after 8:00am (UTC-5), at Central High School, in Knoxville, Tennessee.

According to Deputy Chief of Police of the Knoxville police department, William C. Roehl stated that the shooting was not “random” and that “they had contact with one another”. The shooting which occurred 8:11am (UTC-5), followed a confrontation in the cafeteria. Police arrived on the scene at 8:13am, and the suspect was taken into custody at 8:17am. McDonald was taken to the University of Tennessee Medical Center where he died at 8:57am, according to the police.

Police have arrested Jamar B. Siler, also 15, and charged him with first-degree murder. Judge Tim Irwin set September 17, 2008 as the trial date. Siler is being held at a juvenile detention center.

Kevin Perry, a pastor at Word of Life Ministries, said he had spoken to a student who witnessed the shooting.

“He saw them when they were arguing and pushing and shoving,” Perry said, recounting what the student had told him. “He didn’t see the guy shoot him. What he did see was the guy fall.”

Another high school student, Chad Griffin, was ten feet away from where the confrontation occurred and said that “he [McDonald] got shot and started walking and he was holding his chest. There was blood everywhere. And then he fell and his arm hit me.”

The school was preparing to release students, and bring them to a local church were they could be picked up by their guardians. Central High School has around 1,400 students.

Why Is Online Homework Help Beneficial?

Submitted by: Sean Conoly

Nowadays, students are bombarded with assignments. This is because assignments are considered by educational institutions, both schools and colleges as the means of judging the understanding of students. Earlier, parents were helping children to complete their assignments. But, most of the present day parents of college children are not aware of computers and so they are not in a position to help. In addition, even though, students can understand different computer subjects like C++ and Java, the problem is that when they get assignments in all these subjects, it becomes difficult for them to complete the work within a few days of vacation. This is where C++ assignment help and Java assignment help can be of great help to them.

Not only for these two subjects, they can also find help for visual basic homework and even accounting homework help is possible for students to get. Generally, there are good websites providing this service and here are the benefits of the services provided by these websites:

Canadian Prime Minister Harper meets with U.S. President Bush

Canadian Prime Minister Harper meets with U.S. President Bush

Thursday, July 6, 2006

Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper met with President George W. Bush at the White House today. The meeting was a short one and focused primarily on global security, particularly bilateral security issues addressing the two countries.

One of the larger issues was the pending U.S. law that would require everyone crossing the Canada-U.S. border to have a passport or a special identification card. Prime Minister Harper said; “if the fight for security ends up meaning that the United States becomes more closed to its friends, then the terrorists have won,” as part of his appeal that Congress delay or reject the proposed border law. [1].

Prime Minister Harper brought birthday greetings and a surprise gift. But Bush found out about it during the press conference in the East Room. A Canadian reporter had allegedly blew the secret. [2].

Disposal of fracking wastewater poses potential environmental problems

Disposal of fracking wastewater poses potential environmental problems
Posted by , No Comments

Wednesday, April 25, 2012

A recent study by the United States Geological Survey (USGS) shows that the oil and gas industry are creating earthquakes. New information from the Midwest region of the United States points out that these man-made earthquakes are happening more frequently than expected. While more frequent earthquakes are less of a problem for regions like the Midwest, a geology professor from the University of Southern Indiana, Dr. Paul K. Doss, believes the disposal of wastewater from the hydraulic fracturing (or “fracking”) process used in extracting oil and gas has the possibility to pose potential problems for groundwater.

“We are taking this fluid that has a whole host of chemicals in it that are useful for fracking and putting it back into the Earth,” Doss said. “From a purely seismic perspective these are not big earthquakes that are going to cause damage or initiate, as far as we know, any larger kinds of earthquakes activity for Midwest. [The issue] is a water quality issue in terms of the ground water resources that we use.”

Hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, is a technique used by the oil and gas industries which inject highly pressurized water down into the Earth’s crust to break rock and extract natural gas. Most of the fluids used for fracking are proprietary, so information about what chemicals are used in the various fluids are unknown to the public and to create a competitive edge.

Last Monday four researchers from the University of New Brunswick released an editorial that sheds light on the potential risks that the current wastewater disposal system could have on the province’s water resources. The researchers share the concern that Dr. Doss has and have come out to say that they believe fracking should be stopped in the province until there is an environmentally safe way to dispose the waste wastewater.

“If groundwater becomes contaminated, it takes years to decades to try to clean up an aquifer system,” University of New Brunswick professor Tom Al said.

While the USGS group which conducted the study says it is unclear how the earthquake rates may be related to oil and gas production, they’ve made the correlation between the disposal of wastewater used in fracking and the recent upsurge in earthquakes. Because of the recent information surfacing that shows this connection between the disposal process and earthquakes, individual states in the United States are now passing laws regarding disposal wells.

The problem is that we have never, as a human society, engineered a hole to go four miles down in the Earth’s crust that we have complete confidence that it won’t leak.

“The problem is that we have never, as a human society, engineered a hole to go four miles down in the Earth’s crust that we have complete confidence that it won’t leak,” Doss said. “A perfect case-in-point is the Gulf of Mexico oil spill in 2010, that oil was being drilled at 18,000 feet but leaked at the surface. And that’s the concern because there’s no assurance that some of these unknown chemical cocktails won’t escape before it gets down to where they are trying to get rid of them.”

It was said in the study released by the New Brunswick University professors that if fracking wastewater would contaminate groundwater, that current conventional water treatment would not be sufficient enough to remove the high concentration of chemicals used in fracking. The researchers did find that the wastewater could be recycled, can also be disposed of at proper sites or even pumped further underground into saline aquifers.

The New Brunswick professors have come to the conclusion that current fracking methods used by companies, which use the water, should be replaced with carbon dioxide or liquefied propane gas.

“You eliminate all the water-related issues that we’re raising, and that people have raised in general across North America,” Al said.

In New Brunswick liquefied propane gas has been used successfully in fracking some wells, but according to water specialist with the province’s Natural Resources Department Annie Daigle, it may not be the go-to solution for New Brunswick due its geological makeup.

“It has been used successfully by Corridor Resources here in New Brunswick for lower volume hydraulic fracturing operations, but it is still a fairly new technology,” Daigle said.

The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is working with U.S. states to come up with guidelines to manage seismic risks due to wastewater. Under the Safe Drinking Water Act, the EPA is the organization that also deals with the policies for wells.

Oil wells, which are under regulation, pump out salt water known as brine, and after brine is pumped out of the ground it’s disposed of by being pumped back into the ground. The difference between pumping brine and the high pressurized fracking fluid back in the ground is the volume that it is disposed of.

“Brine has never caused this kind of earthquake activity,” Doss said. “[The whole oil and gas industry] has developed around the removal of natural gas by fracking techniques and has outpaced regulatory development. The regulation is tied to the ‘the run-of-the-mill’ disposal of waste, in other words the rush to produce this gas has occurred before regulatory agencies have had the opportunity to respond.”

According to the USGS study, the increase in injecting wastewater into the ground may explain the sixfold increase of earthquakes in the central part of the United States from 2000 – 2011. USGS researchers also found that in decades prior to 2000 seismic events that happened in the midsection of the U.S. averaged 21 annually, in 2009 it spiked to 50 and in 2011 seismic events hit 134.

“The incredible volumes and intense disposal of fracking fluids in concentrated areas is what’s new,” Doss said. “There is not a body of regulation in place to manage the how these fluids are disposed of.”

The study by the USGS was presented at the annual meeting of the Seismological Society of America on April 18, 2012.
