Are You Prepared to Meet New Customer Needs?

We’ve been forging our way through uncertainty for a few months now, and I have to say: small business owners are resilient.

In a time of stress and sadness we pivoted, we adapted, and I hope everyone, their families and their small businesses are OK.

I’ve written a lot about managing your small business during the pandemic, from How to Pivot Your Small Business Strategy During the COVID-19 Crisis to How to Build a Crisis Response Landing Page.

Now, we focus on the next step: emerging from the coronavirus pandemic not only in one piece, but as successful entrepreneurs who have learned some valuable lessons.

As we move forward, it’s obvious that some things are forever changed. In a recent survey, 81% of Canadians agreed that the crisis will create a new normal and have a lasting impact on society.

So as my province of BC, Canada starts to reopen businesses, it’s time to look at your marketing and evaluate if it still makes sense to your target audience.

How to Define Your Customers’ Needs

Let’s go back`—all the way back to 1943, when Abraham Maslow proposed his hierarchy of needs. According to his theory, people are motivated to fulfill basic requirements (food, shelter) before they move on to more advanced ones (intimate relationships, sense of accomplishment).

During the coronavirus crisis, people were focused more closely on basic necessities like staying safe from COVID-19 and getting groceries. These differing needs may also have led them to buy things they wouldn’t normally buy, like lots of hand sanitizer or takeout food multiple times per week.

Some of the customer behaviour we saw during the pandemic may be here to stay, like:

  • Continuing to wear masks in crowded areas and washing hands more frequently
  • Thinking more carefully before buying “wants”
  • Working/studying from home more of the time
  • Choosing brands that are the most empathetic and conscious

So ask yourself: how have your customer needs changed during this time? What are they expecting from you?

How to Evolve Your Business Model to Meet New Customer Needs

Just because we’re slowly returning to a “new normal’ doesn’t mean everyone is going to be hopping on planes and heading to big parties. Especially for those who have been personally affected by COVID-19, it’s going to be hard to reintegrate back into society, so to speak.

Here are a few ways you might have to pivot to meet new customer needs:

1. Maintain/increase communication around health and safety measures.

A large part of pivoting your business model will include how you communicate with your customers.

For example, salons and spas have been closed for months, and even once they reopen, consumers want to know what steps they’re taking to protect their health. Some clients won’t feel comfortable stepping into a hair salon unless they know there are certain health measures in place.

Don’t be too hasty to remove your COVID-19 landing page` or health and safety messaging from your website or Google My Business listing—rather look at updating copy with new information to put your clients’ minds at ease.

2. Address new patterns. If you’ve started offering heat-and-serve meals, curbside pickup or telemedicine sessions to customers, they may expect that going forward. This can be a good opportunity to take a closer look at what worked and evolve your business model accordingly.

If you don’t sell essential services, you may have to pivot your marketing strategy to approach different spending behaviours. Many people have been hit hard financially and won’t have as much disposable income.

Others will have become accustomed to a new way of doing things. Similarly, to what I mentioned in #1, COVID-19 has changed the way that people consume certain services.

For example, a school may have to integrate more online learning into their model to attract students who are now used to and more comfortable with totally remote classes.

Many organizations are rethinking in-person conferences and other events. Will employees want to travel to huge convention centres to network with other attendees? Or, will they be happy with a virtual conference next year, too?

There’s no arguing this pandemic has led to increased internet traffic as people work, socialize, and entertain themselves online. But an increase in internet usage doesn’t necessarily translate into increased sales for your small business.

Many consumers are hesitant to buy, either because they aren’t sure when they’ll be able to use the service you sell, or because they’ve been laid off or have had their hours reduced.

How Can You Best Meet New Customer Needs?

No matter how you evolve your business model, it’s important to remember that meeting your customers’ needs is an ongoing process. Whether it’s two weeks post-pandemic or two years, always:

Listen, listen, listen. From monitoring your customer reviews, to sending out a questionnaire, it’s never been more important to take your customers’ feelings into consideration.

Listening on social media can also be a great way to “pulse check” how your customers are interacting with your brand and content. Then, use what you’ve learned to tweak your marketing strategy going forward.

Always be engaging. I hope you’ve been doing this during the pandemic, but it’s also critical post-COVID-19. People will still be spending lots of time at home in the near future, so create uplifting, inspiring and/or informative content for your website, social media accounts, paid ads and newsletters.

Pay attention to changing trends in your industry and customer behaviour to guide your content strategy.

Here’s an example: during the pandemic, DIY was big`—from home renos to crafts. Nielsen reported that sales of yeast were up nearly 650% from a year ago, as homebound folks baked up a storm.

So think about how your customers might be using your products or services and give them good content, whether it’s bread-baking tips or how to get out of debt.

No matter what your company sells, communicating with and reassuring your clients is still paramount. And remember: your customers can tell the difference between a sales gimmick and authenticity, so make sure you’re communicating value every time.

So what comes after the crisis? Nobody really knows for sure. But by pivoting your business model as needed now, you’ll be ready for whatever the future brings!

To your business success,Susan Friesen

Colleges offering admission to displaced New Orleans students/AL-KY
See the discussion page for instructions on adding schools to this list and for an alphabetically arranged listing of schools.

Due to the damage by Hurricane Katrina and subsequent flooding, a number of colleges and universities in the New Orleans metropolitan area will not be able to hold classes for the fall 2005 semester. It is estimated that 75,000 to 100,000 students have been displaced. [1]. In response, institutions across the United States and Canada are offering late registration for displaced students so that their academic progress is not unduly delayed. Some are offering free or reduced admission to displaced students. At some universities, especially state universities, this offer is limited to residents of the area.

Contractors are professionals and knowledgeable enough about proper installation and regular maintenance of different types of aluminum materials. These contractors can replace old aluminum patio covers, or repair areas of damage on existing aluminum, vinyl, fiberglass, wood, or even siding. Below are steps that can help you to hire the perfect contractor that will suit your needs and budget:

Search your local area. It is most likely that you will find an aluminum installer in your area. Most of them are listed on the telephone directory. If you got Yellow Pages, then start hunting from there.

Ask around. You can find a reliable contractor around your area by talking to your friends, colleagues, family members and neighbours. They would definitely give you a good recommendation and a reliable list you can contact and make an arrangement. If you live in Richmond, maybe you can look for contractors who offer installing of awnings in Richmond.

Visit a hardware store in your local area. You can also look for reliable contractors from your local home renovation center. They have a list of contractors who frequently buy some materials from them.

Go to your favourite search engine. Look for contractors that offer the things you need like installation of aluminum deck railing or aluminum patio cover. Internet has a lot to offer. You just have to be keen on choosing the best.

Explain your needs to the contractor when you invited each one of them. Inviting them to your house will help these contractors to assess your home and recommend methods to resolve your needs. If you need deck patio covers, then these contractors will explain the details.

Ask for free estimate. This estimate is a detailed quote that will represent the work needed for your home.

Ask for the warranties and guarantees. Inquire to the contractors if they offer warranty and guarantee on the work they will provide.

Check the portfolio. Ensure that the contractor has worked on projects similar to yours and using the same materials.

Professional appearance is important. Take a look at the appearance; professional look is important. Study the contractor’s attitude and behaviour. He should be willing to accommodate questions.

References are important. Your contractors should provide references. In this way, you will have to confirm if this particular contractor has done some works related to your project. You call the previous client to ask how their working experience with this contractor was.

Discuss the project details. You should talk to the contractor and review the requirements for the said project. You can discuss things like removal of old materials, potential problems during the project, additional charges and time frame for the project completion. Also, ask the contractor if he there are permits that need to be obtained.

Choose the contractor who meets your needs and budget. Make that your chosen contractor will fit your budget and attend to your needs.

Get a written and signed contract. It should contain the labour charges, costs of materials, added charges, time frame of the project and other concerns

Read some client testimonials from different websites like Yelp.

Good luck on your contractor hunt!

Basketball: Djordjevic’s farewell game to be played July 3

Friday, June 24, 2005

Popular Serbian basketball player Aleksandar “Sasha” Djordjevic will play his last game in Belgrade on July 3. More then 60 players and coaches who worked with Djordjevic throughout his career will attend the game, and all ticket proceedings will go to the UNICEF “School without violence” program.

Djordjevic played in the Yugoslavian, Italian, Spanish and NBA leagues, as well as for the Yugoslavian national team. The 38 year-old won two European Championships and one World Championship. He is retireing as a player of Armani Jeans Milano and an MVP of the Lega A Basket.

“Everything hurts: my shoulder, elbow and joint. Everything ends, and so does a basketball career. They still have to invent medicines that would ease this pain,” said Djordjevic.

Croatian basketball player Dino Radja decided not to come to Belgrade. He told Djordjevic that he doesn’t want any booing, which would ruin the farewell game.

Preparations for inaugural Bathurst International Motor Festival begin

Wednesday, February 22, 2006

The Bathurst Regional Council has begun preparing the Mount Panorama motor racing circuit for the inaugural Bathurst International Motorsport Festival (BIMF) to be held between April 13 and 16, 2006. The Mount Panorama motor racing circuit is considered to be the home of motorsport in Australia.

Council’s staff have been busy cleaning the facilities, erecting signage, checking pedestrian bridges and inspecting the track surface for the past few days.

The BIMF will be the first event to be held at the 6.2 kilometre circuit over Easter since 2000. In 2000, Event Management Specialists held the first motorcycle racing event since 1990, but due to EMS going bankrupt a short time after their 2000 event was ran and the inability of the then Bathurst City Council to find another promoter, the Easter event was canned.

The BIMF is inspired by the Festival of Speed and Goodwood Revival in the United Kingdom. The Bathurst Regional Council and event promoter Global Entertainment Team promise that the event “will cater for all motoring enthusiasts, collectors and historians”.

According to the BIMF website, the on-track program consists of:

  • Manufacturers showcasing their vehicles and track times
  • Historic touring car races
  • Aussie racing car races
  • Australian GT sports car
  • Parade laps by car clubs
  • Parade laps and races by “Legends of Motorsport”
  • Stunt car and bike events
  • Rally cars
  • Displays of cars from all eras of Mount Panorama’s history
  • The chance for patrons to purchase a ride around the circuit in a race car.

Off the track, the organisers have promised manufacturer displays, merchandise stands, music, joyflights, Off-road demonstrations and joyrides, autograph sessions and interviews with influential people in the Australian motor industry.

What Is Drop Shipping?

Submitted by: Stephen Green

Drop shipping is a supply chain management technique in which the retailer does not keep goods in stock, but instead transfers customer orders and shipment details to either the manufacturer or a wholesaler, who then ships the goods directly to the customer. As in retail businesses, the majority of retailers makes their profit on the difference between the wholesale and retail price but some retailers earn an agreed percentage of the sales in commission, paid by the wholesaler to the retailer.

A drop shipper is a manufacturer or authorized wholesale distributor who will ship your single item orders directly to your customers. You will put the product pictures on your site at retail and wait for an order. Once you receive an order you will email or call the drop ship supplier with the customer s order information and they will in turn ship the product directly to your customer.

Two significant benefits of drop shipping are the elimination of upfront inventory and a positive cash-flow cycle. A positive cash flow cycle occurs because the seller is paid when the purchase is made. The seller usually pays the wholesaler using a credit card or credit terms. Therefore, there is a period of time in which the seller has the customer’s money, but has not yet paid the wholesaler.

Drop shipping also eliminates some duplication of effort, since only one warehouse will pick, pack and ship the product. This approach can reduce total inventory management and shipping costs. These cost reductions can subsequently reduce the price to the consumer.

Risks involved in drop shipping. For example, backordering may occur when a seller places a shipment request with a wholesaler, but the product is sold out. Backordering may be accompanied by a long wait for a shipment while the wholesaler waits for new products, which may reflect badly on the retailer. A good wholesaler will keep retailers updated, but it is the business owner’s job to be aware of the quantities that the wholesaler has available.

Drop shipping has also featured prominently in some Internet-based home business scams. Scam artists will promote drop shipping as a lucrative work from home opportunity. The victim who buys into this scam will be sold a list of businesses from which drop-shipment orders can be placed. These businesses may not be wholesalers, but other businesses or individuals acting as middlemen between retailers and wholesalers, with no product of their own to sell. These middlemen often charge prices that leave little profit margin for the victim, and require a regular fee for the retailer’s usage of their services.

Benefit from drop shipping are as follows:

You don t carry any inventory

You get to set the retail price at whatever you want for huge profits

There are no minimum order requirements

You pay the wholesaler only after you receive an order.

The disadvantages are some of the following:

You completely rely on the supplier to send the product to your customer on-time

Your profit margins are sometimes affected by fluctuations in wholesale pricing.

Not all drop shippers have an up-to-date supply chain. This means they may not have any ability to track inventory or automate their accounts.

How To Stop A Dog Digging

How to Stop a Dog Digging

According to some surveys, around 80% of dogs dig holes. This is probably not surprising as digging is a natural adaptive behavior from the wild. However, since dogs now live in homes, this behavior can mess up your garden. This article explains why dogs dig holes and how to stop them from doing so.

Why Dogs Dig

Your dog can be digging for one or more of the reasons below.

  • The dogs are suffering from boredom. Puppies or younger dogs who have high energies just love digging. Digging up holes seem like a fun activity for them. In addition, yanking plant roots can be an interesting challenge for them.
  • The dogs hunting instinct is kicking in. They cansmell bunnies, moles, or other ground dwelling animals. Hence, they dig to track down these animals. It is also a good supply of fresh food.
  • Burying food. Most people know dogs bury bones in holes. This behavior is a legacy from the dogs’ ancestors who store food in holes. Sometimes, they change the safety spot and bury it in another hole. As a result, you end up with more holes!
  • To get cool and comfortable. This can happen during summer or a particular hot day. The soil is cool and moist after removing the warm top layer.
  • To search for freedom and adventure. Dogs sometimes like to hang outside without their owner’s permission. To this end, they will dig a tunnel bordering your property in a bid to escape outside.
  • Symptom of separation anxiety. Digging is one-way dogs relieve their pent-up stress when their owners’ leave. The dogs could also possibly be digging a tunnel to go outside and find you.
  • Sign of nesting. This is an indication that your female dog is about to give birth. She digs to find a place to protect her puppies from predators.

How to Stop Your Dog from Digging

Once you identify the reason why your dog digs, choose the appropriate methods below.

  • Find ways to release your dog’s energy. Take your dog for walks or for a swim. If you are already doing that, do it for longer periods of time.Put backpacks on your dogs to intensify their exercises, if it is not possible to increase the exercise duration.
  • Give them an area to dig. You can give your dogs a specific place in your garden to dig. Start the initial hole. You can also choose to get a sand box. Either way, bury their toys or treats there to inspire them to dig there.
  • Bury dog poop. Scoop your dog poop and put in the hole before you fill it back. Dogs don’t like to dig up their own feces. Take note, this might not fully work as the dogs can choose to create another hole.
  • Spray the area with paprika or cayenne pepper. These spices smell deter most dogs. This method is also not full proof as the dog can dig anotherarea.
  • If you believe your dog digs to cool off, provide some of the items below.
    1. An insulated dog house
    2. A shallow wading pool
    3. A fan (air blowing over ice feels just like air conditioning)
    4. A bed that allows air to circulate underneath
  • Be a pack leader. You need to do this if your dog has separation anxiety issues. Only then, will your dog be able to fully relax while you are away. Furthermore, been a pack leader will solve other behavior problems. I recommend checking thelink below to understand how to become thepack leader.

Experts: obesity is a bigger threat than AIDS or bird flu

Experts: obesity is a bigger threat than AIDS or bird flu
Posted by , No Comments

Friday, September 8, 2006

From September 3 to 8, experts gathered at the 10th International Congress on Obesity in Sydney, Australia, to discuss what they call the worldwide “obesity epidemic”. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), 1 billion people in the world today are overweight, and 300 million of those are obese. “Obesity and overweight pose a major risk for serious diet-related chronic diseases, including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, hypertension and stroke, and certain forms of cancer“, a WHO fact sheet states. According to AP, experts at the conference “have warned that obesity is a bigger threat than AIDS or bird flu, and will easily overwhelm the world’s health care systems if urgent action is not taken”.

Of particular concern is the large number of overweight children. Dr. Stephan Rossner from Sweden’s Karolinska University Hospital, a leading obesity expert who was present at the conference, has warned that as a result of the increasing number of overweight children, “we will have, within a decade or two, a number of young people who are on kidney dialysis. There will not be organs for everybody”. UK-based International Obesity Task Force has said that junk food manufacturers target children, for example, through Internet advertising, chat rooms, text messages, and “advergames” on websites. Politicians are not doing enough to address the problem of obesity, including childhood obesity, the experts said.

According to Wikipedia, examples of junk food include, but are not limited to: hamburgers, pizza, candy, soda, and salty foods like potato chips and french fries. A well-known piece of junk food is the Big Mac. The US version of just one Big Mac burger contains 48% of calories from fat, 47% US Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) of fat, 52% RDA of saturated fat, 26% RDA of cholesterol, 42% RDA of sodium, and little nutritional value. It also has 18% of calories from protein. According to WHO, most people need only about 5% calories from protein. Staples such as rice, corn, baked potatoes, pinto beans, as well as fruits and vegetables such as broccoli, cauliflower, zucchini, oranges, and strawberries, provide more than this required amount of protein without the unhealthy amounts of fats or sodium, without cholesterol, and with plenty of fiber, vitamins, and minerals.

Both WHO and the American Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) define overweight in adults as a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 25 or above, and obese as a BMI of 30 or above. To combat overweight and obesity, WHO recommends that, among other things, people should be taking the following steps

  • eating more fruit and vegetables, as well as nuts and whole grains;
  • engaging in daily moderate physical activity for at least 30 minutes;
  • cutting the amount of fatty, sugary foods in the diet;
  • moving from saturated animal-based fats to unsaturated vegetable-oil based fats.
