Five British citizens have been seized in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad. The group, comprising a finance expert and four bodyguards, were captured from the finance ministry by kidnappers wearing police uniforms and driving police vehicles. The BBC is reporting that over 40 police vehicles were involved in the incident.

In separate incidents, at least 22 people were killed and 55 injured in a bus explosion elsewhere in the city, and at least 15 people were killed in a car bomb which injured a further 36, possibly more.

It is believed the four bodyguards are employed by Canadian GardaWord, a subsidiary of Garda.

The Interstate 35W Mississippi River eight-lane bridge in Minneapolis, Minnesota has collapsed on both sides of the highway over the Mississippi River during rush hour.

Previous reports indicated at least nine people had died, but Minneapolis police revised this to four during a 7:30 a.m. (local time) press conference. Tim Dolan, the Minneapolis Police Chief later stated that “several [adding to the four] people are confirmed dead at the scene,” but would not elaborate on how many. At least 79 have been injured and at least 8 are still missing, still believed to be in the rubble.

The road was busy with bumper-to-bumper traffic in four lanes when the entire 1907 foot (581 m) steel arch bridge collapsed. At least 50 cars were traveling on the bridge, including a school bus. The Red Cross said that 60 children were aboard a school bus, and that ten of those were admitted to a hospital.

The entire length of the bridge over the river collapsed at 6:05 p.m. CDT (UTC-5). The bridge, built in 1967, cleared the water level by 64 feet; the deck surface and pavement were considerably higher.

Reports say that people may be trapped in the water. Further, “many voids may contain survivors, but we cannot search those voids until it’s safe,” said Jim Clack, Minneapolis Fire Chief, during a press conference.

“One has died from drowning,” said a doctor from the medical center during an 8:00 pm press conference, who also said that so far 22 are in “yellow condition” and at least six are in “critical condition.”

Minneapolis officials have stated during an earlier press conference that “people are being sent downtown and all survivors are off the bridge. We are seeking help from the Red Cross.” and “[…]at least 60 children are receiving trauma care some with severe injures, some with minor injuries.”

Most of the injured have been received by Hennepin County Medical Center in downtown Minneapolis for medical treatment. Area hospitals are requesting all off duty staff and all Minneapolis ambulances to report. Residents are being encouraged to stay away from the area to let emergency crews do their work.

It is not known what caused the collapse, but there was construction being performed on the bridge’s road surface which included the use of jackhammers and the FBI has ruled out terrorism.

“Although it is much too early to make any determination of the cause, we have no reason at this time to believe there is any nexus to terrorism,” said Paul McCabe, an FBI spokesman.

In 2001 a stress inspection was done and Minnesota Department of Transportation stated that the bridge “should not have any problems with fatigue cracking in the foreseeable future.”

Typically an eight-lane bridge, the bridge was reduced to four lanes (two in each direction) during the current construction. The Minnesota Department of Transportation (Mn/DOT) had just announced overnight lane reductions on the bridge to one lane in each direction for the late evening hours of July 31 and August 1.

Who would not want a nice warm day, when the sun is smiling down on the freshness of the earth? The blanket rolled out on the soft green grass with family and friends beaming, talking freely of the bygone days, the present cares and the future up ahead.

And of course, a special day out wouldn t be complete, without the smell of burgers, frankfurters, barbecue, steaks and chops on the grill. When you talk about picnics, outdoor cooking is a need.

There s something different about outdoor cooking. The food seems to taste better. Cooking outdoors could actually be an activity by itself. You just need to have the right equipment. There are also particular set of rules to be followed as you plan what, how, when, and where to cook the perfect outdoor treats.

Outdoor cooking should be safe and simple. There are available varieties of grills in a lot of shapes and sizes. Like for instance, the simple grills wherein you could use newspapers as a fuel, and the hibachis.

There are also the grills on wheels, grills with battery-powered and motor-driven spits. The most commonly used fuel is the charcoal. If you want less charcoal smell, use briquettes over lump charcoal. Briquettes also give a more consistent and hotter flame.

In general, there are three different kinds of grills depending on its usage:

Open Fire Grill- from the name itself uses an open-fire as a fuel source. The fire is usually allowed to burn down so that the flame will not burn the meat. It s difficult to regulate the cooking temperature with this type of grill.

Charcoal Grill- charcoal is used as a fuel here. It is the hibachi that was mentioned above, that is commonly used in Asia, and known in the United States as well.

Gas Grill- extremely popular for its convenience. Moreover, it gives a sumptuous grilled flavor. It is so much easy to control the cooking temperature as the fuel and the fire can be regulated.

Here are some few things to think about grilling:

After the fire is lit, wait for the flame to turn red from blue. The coal should be glowing red before cooking, if you don t want your food to be burnt in the outside and raw inside.

Before cooking, with a small cloth damped on cooking oil, rub the grill so the food would not stick on it.

While cooking, you may only turn the meat once or twice. Put on the salt just before serving.

Instead of using a fork to roll the meat, use long-handed tongs so as not to puncture the meat. You wouldn t want to lose its juices.

Michael Gurian, psychologist and author of “What Could He Be Thinking?“, has claimed to identify approximately one hundred structural differences between male and female brains in a recent study. Gurian comments:

“Men, because we tend to compartmentalize our communication into a smaller part of the brain, we tend to be better at getting right to the issue, the more female brain (will) gather a lot of material, gather a lot of information, feel a lot, hear a lot, sense a lot.“

One major structural difference that Gurian has made clear is that males generally have more activity in the mechanical centers of the brain, while women have more activity in centers of the brain dedicated to verbal communication and emotion. A clear example of this is the hypothetical situation of giving a child a toy. He explains it as such:

“That doll becomes life-like to that girl, but you give it to a two-year-old boy and you are more likely, not all the time, but you are more likely than not to see that boy try to take the head off the doll. He thinks spatial-mechanical. He’s using the doll as an object.“

Another expert, Dr. Marianne Legato, says it all boils down to genetics, noting that the Y chromosome (which only males carry) has “at least 21 unique genes unique to males which control many of the body’s operations down to the level of the cells.”

Gurian agrees that culture is significant in brain development, but argues that biology plays an equally important role. He makes a point of how the MRI scans show that the female corpus callosum, the center of the brain which regulates communication between the brain’s hemispheres, is larger than the male’s. On the other hand, the scans also show that information flows more freely between the hemispheres of the male brain.

The exact role that brain structure plays in behavior, however, has been an area of considerable contention in science for literally hundreds of years. Early studies in craniometry conducted by Paul Pierre Broca were used to attempt to distinguish differences between human races, though have now been dismissed as scientific racism. The nature-nurture debate has raged for centuries in a variety of forms, without yet any clear resolution as to the role in which innate biological tendencies interact with environmental conditions or willed behavior. As such, studies relating to brain structure and claims to innate behavior often generate substantial controversy.

MIT anthropologist of science Joseph Dumit’s study of brain imaging in his book Picturing Personhood: Brain Scans and Biomedical Identity, noted that the apparent “transparency” of such pictures (the appearance that they can be easily interpreted by laymen, when they are often the source of ambiguity and dispute by even highly-trained neurosurgeons) has led to their proliferation as indicators of objective truth in media and in courts of law, and that such conclusions are often knowingly exaggerated by the specialists creating the images for better visual effect.

The timing of Gurian’s book comes on the heels of another controversy over gender differences sparked by comments made by Harvard president Lawrence Summers, who blamed low numbers of women in the sciences on genetic differences. Summers has been criticized by a large number of academics and scientists, as well as by many news publications, in the wake of what he was reported as saying during a conference on January 14.

The Marussia F1 team’s test driver, Spaniard María de Villota, was taken to hospital by air ambulance today after a collision in testing at Duxford Aerodrome.

At the end of her first installation run, the car she was driving had a low-speed collision with the loading ramp of the team’s support truck. According to BBC Cambridgeshire presenter Chris Mann, the car “suddenly accelerated” into the rear of the vehicle. The Marussia team released a statement an hour and a half after the accident, stating that she had been transferred to hospital, and a further statement would be issued once her condition had been assessed.

A spokesman for the East of England ambulance service, Gary Sanderson, said de Villota had “[…] sustained life-threatening injuries and following treatment at the scene by paramedics, she has been taken to Addenbrooke’s Hospital for further care.” According to witnesses, she was motionless for about fifteen minutes as medical teams attended to her, but did move her hands before being taken away from the test track. Medical charity Magpas, whose volunteer paramedics attended the accident, reported she had sustained injuries to her head and face, and was in a ‘stable condition’ when she reached the hospital.

Marussia reported her as conscious later in the afternoon: “Since Maria’s arrival at the hospital at approximately 10.45am this morning, she has been receiving the best medical attention possible at the hospital, which is the region’s major trauma centre. Maria is conscious and medical assessments are ongoing. The team will await the outcome of these assessments before providing further comment. The team’s first priority at this time is Maria and her family.”

De Villota was announced as Marussia’s test driver in March, having prior experience driving for Alan Docking Racing in Superleague Formula in Spain.

At Thanksgiving dinner David Shankbone told his white middle class family that he was to interview Reverend Al Sharpton that Saturday. The announcement caused an impassioned discussion about the civil rights leader’s work, the problems facing the black community and whether Sharpton helps or hurts his cause. Opinion was divided. “He’s an opportunist.” “He only stirs things up.” “Why do I always see his face when there’s a problem?”

Shankbone went to the National Action Network’s headquarters in Harlem with this Thanksgiving discussion to inform the conversation. Below is his interview with Al Sharpton on everything from Tawana Brawley, his purported feud with Barack Obama, criticism by influential African Americans such as Clarence Page, his experience running for President, to how he never expected he would see fifty (he is now 53). “People would say to me, ‘Now that I hear you, even if I disagree with you I don’t think you’re as bad as I thought,'” said Sharpton. “I would say, ‘Let me ask you a question: what was “bad as you thought”?’ And they couldn’t say. They don’t know why they think you’re bad, they just know you’re supposed to be bad because the right wing tells them you’re bad.”

Simple Leather Repair

There is no reason to leave that discolored leather jacket at home if you are willing to spend a modest amount for a simple, leather repair kit. A variety of quality kits which include easy directions can keep you from spending more on re-coloring than you did on the leather item itself. Although it sometimes takes a few attempts, even the most unusual shades of leather can be matched with the right kit. Directions in an easy-to-use kit should include a color chart which will help you mix the shade to match your leather item, and clear explanations of how much color is included in each bottle.

Coloring Leather

Color is not the only thing to look for in a good repair kit. The area to be repaired, if not the entire piece, should be properly prepped with a professional cleaner made for the kind of leather you own. The kit should note whether it can be used for non-protected or non-treated leather, like aniline, or if it is strictly for previously protected leather.

A problem with color often means there is a stain or rip issue as well. Check to see if the kit includes all of the compound, sub-patch material, applicators, cleaners and conditioners that you are going to need to make a complete and professional-looking repair. Special extras which may be nice to have in a kit are sprays which reduce the appearance of brush marks after re-coloring, or ones which produce various, grainy textures.

Finding or mixing the right color can often be the most challenging aspect of doing leather re-coloring at home. Sometimes it takes a few tries to get it right, so see if there is a convenient, less visible part of the item which you can test out first.

Often a kit can be personalized. All of the items that you need are in the kit, along with an exact, premixed color. Some shades are being manufactured to match specific clothing, furniture or automobile interiors.

If the color of your leather interior is unmatchable in the default selections, then try furniture or even clothing colors. Some people prefer re-coloring kits which include a spectrum of colors, so they can test the combinations to find the perfect shade.

Liquid Leather Repair Kits

Liquid leather repair kits are another option. They produce the same result as traditional kits, but typically use a heating tool to bind the leather-like paper to the damaged area. There are also no-heat liquid kits.

These kits tend to be a little less expensive than the standard re-coloring kits. A benefit to using the liquid leather is that it takes less time to finish the job. You spend less time waiting for coats to dry than you would with the standard leather repair kits. Again, an area should be tested first, especially if there is antique or delicate leather involved.

Whether a liquid leather or traditional leather repair kit is used, the most important thing is that it includes everything that you will need, and in the right amounts.

Part of what is needed for successful leather repair, is concise directions. Directions for each bottle, tool, patch, cloth, color and applicator should be included. There should be a color chart which describes how much to mix of each color.

Spending a bit more on a simple-to-use repair kit will ensure that you can reproduce and match the texture and color of your leather as much as possible. Having too much product to do your re-coloring is better than not having enough, so make sure that your $15 to $60 investment supplies you with enough get your re-coloring project done, and perhaps one in the future as well.

A fast-moving fire engulfed the home of late singer Johnny Cash on Tuesday. The lake-side home, located in Hendersonville, Tennessee, was the home of the late singer and his wife, June Carter, from the late 1960s until their deaths in 2003.

The home was purchased by former Bee Gees singer Barry Gibb in 2006, and was undergoing renovations at the time. The cause of the fire is unknown at this time, but it is believed that a flammable wood preservative that construction workers had applied contributed to the speed in which the flames spread. Firefighters responded within 5 minutes of the fire breaking out. No workers were killed in the fire, but one firefighter suffered minor injuries.

“Maybe it’s the good Lord’s way to make sure that it was only Johnny’s house,” said Richard Sterban of The Oak Ridge Boys, who lived down the road from Cash. Neighbor Marty Stewart said “So many prominent things and prominent people in American history took place in that house—everyone from Billy Graham to Bob Dylan went into that house.” The home was where Cash wrote many of his hit songs, and appeared in the Cash music video for “Hurt“.
