Alfred Hsing, a US martial artist with Chinese origins, besides having a long history of martial arts training in various styles, such as traditional kung fu, tae kwon do and karate, considers wushu – an athletic sport based on Chinese martial arts – as a form of art that pushes one’s physical limits and stimulates the mind at the same time. After having won the gold medal at the 10th World Wushu Championships, he became international movie star Jet Li’s personal assistant and went on to do stunts, action choreography, and land roles in movies.

Election in Moldova instigates rioting mob demanding recount

Thursday, April 9, 2009

Protests which began Monday escalated to a riot on Wednesday consisting of over 10,000 people in Chi?in?u, the capital of Moldova, protesting the results of Sunday’s 2009 Moldovan parliamentary election, which showed an apparent, narrow victory for the Communist Party (Partidul Comuni?tilor din Republica Moldova, PCRM). Demonstrators claim the victory was the result of electoral fraud.

The demonstration escalated to a “flash mob” of between 10,000 to 15,000 communicating via online tools like email, micro-blogging tool Twitter, and social-networking website Facebook. “We sent messages on Twitter but didn’t expect 15,000 people to join in. At the most we expected 1,000”, said Oleg Brega of the activist group Hyde Park.

Police deployed tear gas and water cannons, and fired blanks into the crowd. The rioters threw stones at the riot police and took control of the parliament building and presidential office. A bonfire was built out of parliamentary furniture and all windows below the 7th floor were broken.

Approximately one hundred protesters and 170 police officers are reported as injured. There have been conflicting reports as to whether a female protester died during the altercation.

193 protesters “have been charged with looting, hooliganism, robbery and assault,” said an Interior Ministry spokesperson. This announcement sparked another protest by those demanding the release for those detained.

There is wide speculation about who was to blame for the rioting.

President Vladimir Voronin has expelled the Romanian ambassador from Moldova, blaming Romania for the violent protests. “We know that certain political forces in Romania are behind this unrest. The Romanian flags fixed on the government buildings in Chisinau attest to this” said Voronin. “Romania is involved in everything that has happened.“ Voronin also blamed the protests on opposition leaders who used violence to seize power, and has described the event as a coup d’état.

Protesters initially insisted on a recount of the election results and are now calling for a new vote, which has been rejected by the government. Rioters were also demanding unification between Moldova and Romania. “In the air, there was a strong expectation of change, but that did not happen”, said OSCE spokesman Matti Sidoroff.File:Dorin Chirtoaca.jpg

“The elections were fraudulent, there was multiple voting” accused Chi?in?u mayor Dorin Chirtoac? of the Liberal Party. “It’s impossible that every second person in Moldova voted for the Communists. However, we believe the riots were a provocation and we are now trying to reconcile the crowd. Leaders of all opposition parties are at the scene,” said Larissa Manole of the Liberal Democratic Party of Moldova.

The Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) proclaimed the PCRM to have won 61 seats in initial counts, enough to guarantee a third term in power for Voronin, who has held the position since 2001. But the Central Election Commission has received evidence of election violations, according to RIA Novosti, and upon recounts conducted of disputed polls, the commission reported that the Communists achieved 49.48% of the Moldovian vote, giving them 60 parliamentary seats — one short of the total needed to win the presidential election. “The electoral commission also granted opposition parties permission to check voter lists, fulfilling one of their chief demands,” said Yuri Ciocan, Central Election Commission secretary.

Voronin will step down in May, however his party could elect a successor with 61 parliamentary seats without any votes from outside parties as well as amend the Constitution. With the PCRM garnering 60 seats, the opposition will have a voice in the presidential election for a new successor.

The western part of Moldova was a part of Romania from the Romania’s independence until the region was detached by the USSR in 1940 to form the Moldavian Soviet Socialist Republic. On independence in 1990 the country sought union with Romania but the eastern, Russian- and Ukrainian-inhabited areas of the country declared themselves independent from Moldova and formed the state of Transnistria and movement toward union was halted.

Moldova is Europe’s poorest country, where average income is less than $250 (£168) a month. The country’s neighbours are Romania and Ukraine. Romania is a European Union (EU) state.

Family Holiday Insurance: How The Medico-Legal Culture Factors In

by

Patrick D Chong

There’s a good reason family holiday insurance packages come highly recommended: they give you peace of mind and that can’t be overestimated. The problem, however, is that many people take the risk of going abroad uninsured, banking on the fact that nothing bad will happen to them during their trip.

Yet the spectre of illness, misadventure or even natural disaster is one that cannot simply be wished away especially when you factor in how different cultures take different approaches to medical treatment.

Multi-Stage vs Definitive Diagnosis

Lets take, for example, the different approaches the UK and the US have when it comes to diagnosing diseases. In the UK, doctors tend to take a low-key approach to illness. This multi-stage approach starts off with the doctor making a quick assessment of the patient. If nothing serious is spotted, the doctor gives an initial prescription while adopting a wait-and-see approach reserving advanced procedures only when the initial treatment does not work. This approach is encouraged among doctors in order to minimise costs and conserve resources.

If you are holidaying in the US and someone in your family gets sick while on the trip, doctors will seek a definitive diagnosis the very first time you come to them with a problem. This often means a barrage of tests to determine with certainty the cause of whatever is ailing you. You will often get your answers right away, but this can get very expensive if you dont have family holiday insurance to cover the expenses. US doctors take this approach not only because they are paid for their services, but also because making a definitive diagnosis shields them from the inevitable lawsuit they would encounter should they misdiagnose a patient.

So what does all this really mean? Simple: if you ever find yourself in a culture that places greater emphasis on definitive diagnosis, you will most likely end up unprepared for the financial setbacks of doing so.

Opt-In vs. Compulsory Treatment

Another major risk you face if you travel without family holiday insurance is finding yourself in a situation where medical treatment cannot be avoided. If you’re lucky, you could opt out of treatment and wait until you get back to the UK, where the NHS will cover a large part of the resulting medical expenses. If you are unlucky, however, you could find yourself (or a member of your family) forced to undertake treatment on the spot something that will cost a lot of money without the proper insurance.

This is why insurance premiums for some countries cost a lot more than other countries, especially in the US. Its citizens are expected to choose their own health care providers, unlike many countries in Europe where citizens pay higher taxes in exchange for subsidised medical care. Not only that, but the treatment procedures are exhaustive, sometimes to the point where they can be considered excessive resulting in significantly higher medical fees.

It is for this reason that family holiday insurance comes highly recommended when travelling to any country. The amount of money saved on the diagnosis alone makes such insurance a worthy investment and thats not even counting the treatment itself, should it come to that.

Patrick Chong is the Managing Director of InsureMore. We provide low cost travel insurance and offer a range of policies including

, annual, multi-trip and single-trip insurance. For all your travel cover needs, InsureMore can help you in the quickest and most cost-efficient way.

“Woofstock” dog festival in Toronto, Ontario, Canada

Tuesday, June 12, 2007

North America’s largest outdoor dog festival came back to Toronto last weekend for its fifth year. It ran from the 9th of June to the 10th of June at Toronto’s historical St. Lawrence Market. A Wikinews reporter was there on Sunday to report on some of the events that happened on the last day.

The “Woofstock” dog festival attracted as many as 140,000 people with their dogs. The festival had tons of accessories, sold under tents, to buy for dogs; food, toys, designer clothes, and more. About 400 vendors and exhibitors were there to promote their products, which also gave private dog companies or groups a chance to show their new products. The local SPCA and some animal rescues were under tents answering questions from visitors. While walking, all visitors could see the CN Tower and other very tall buildings.

One of the local TV stations, Citytv, was there. They hosted a live event at the show which was broadcast on TV. People came up on the stage and asked questions regarding their dogs and the host and co-host answered them.

A man, who called himself the “Chalk Master”, drew two pictures on pavement with chalk. He did it for free but donations were welcome. One was a picture of a girl’s head beside a dog’s head, and another with a wolf.

“Hello Humans. I’ve been invited here to provide your eyeball(s), with some pretty colours. I don’t get paid as I work this weekend strictly for tips… so, if you like what you see please make a DONATION. If you don’t like it simply reach into the pocket of the person next to you and give me their money. CHALK MASTER.”

A contest called “Canada’s top dog” had its own tent with a professional photographer taking pictures of dogs behind a white screen; the winning photo is to be published on the cover of “Puppy and dog basics” magazine.

Large “Gourmet” dog bones were also served from a cart and table.

Next year’s festival is expected to be bigger and better with even more attractions.

North Korea withdraws from Tokyo Olympics, citing COVID-19 concerns
Posted by , No Comments
Correction — January 13, 2022 The article states that North Korea boycotted the 1988 Summer Games in Los Angeles. This is incorrect, the 1988 Summer Games took place in Seoul. North Korea did however boycott the 1984 Summer Games in Los Angeles.

Friday, April 9, 2021

On Tuesday, North Korean government announced it would not participate in the delayed Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics “to protect players from the world public health crisis caused by COVID-19”, the Associated Press reported. It is North Korea’s first official withdrawal from Olympics since their boycott of the 1988 Summer Olympics held in Seoul, South Korea, CBS News reported.

According to South Korea’s Ministry of Unification, this is the first time North Korea withdrew from a major international sports event due to concerns of an infectious disease. Several athletes from multiple disciplines did not participate in the 2016 Summer Olympics over concerns of the Zika virus, but North Korea did.

South Korean President Moon Jae-in had hoped the two nations could field a joint team similar to its unified Korean Peninsula team at the 2018 Winter Olympics, Al Jazeera reported.

While North Korea claims to have no cases of the coronavirus, professor of North Korean studies at Ewha Womans University Park Won Gon says it has shown “a coronavirus-related neurosis since it declared an emergency anti-virus system in January last year”, adding it was very unlikely the country would be able to procure enough vaccines for its population by July, when the 2020 Olympics are scheduled to take place.

In November, Daily NK reported North Korea had placed 81 thousand people, in quarantine excluding the soldiers in quarantine; and, by October 22, 32,011 people were placed in isolation. A source told Daily NK over 300 people had died in an isolation centre in Anju, South Pyongan.

Director of Asian Studies at Temple University, Japan Campus Jeff Kingston told CBS this decision was a “setback for diplomacy”. CBS also reported Seoul’s disappointment at the nation’s non-attendance, depriving South Korea a chance to discuss relations with North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un. Recently, North Korea’s vice department director of the Central Committee of the Workers’ Party of Korea and sister of Kim Jong-un Kim Yo Jong warned March 16 “[t]he peaceful spring days of three years ago are unlikely to return”, calling South Korean leaders as “all born with stupidity” and they “have become the dumb and deaf bereft of judgment”. The warning came after the United States and South Korea held joint military drills in March.

This also comes after North Korea tested two ballistic missile on March 24, described by former admiral of the Japanese fleet Yoji Koda as “just the beginning of North Korean fervour.”

North Korea participated in the boycotts of the 1964 Summer Olympics in Tokyo and 1988 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles.

Chinese General threatens U.S. with nuclear weapons over possible Taiwan Strait conflict, Beijing downplays comment
Posted by , No Comments

Saturday, July 16, 2005

A General in the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) and dean at the National Defense University in China commented to visiting Hong Kong reporters on Friday that the PLA might use nuclear weapons against the U.S., in a conflict over the Taiwan Strait. “If the Americans draw their missiles and position-guided ammunition onto the target zone on China’s territory, I think we will have to respond with nuclear weapons,” Maj. Gen. Zhu Chenghu said to the reporters of the Asian Wall Street Journal and the Financial Times. “We Chinese will prepare ourselves for the destruction of all of the cities east of Xian [in central China]. Of course the Americans will have to be prepared that hundreds … of cities will be destroyed by the Chinese.”

U.S. State Department spokesman Sean McCormack called the remarks “highly irresponsible” and “unfortunate”, and expressed the hope that they did not reflect the views of the Chinese government.

Echoing the official Xinhua News Agency, the People’s Republic of China’s Foreign Ministry officials said that Zhu was expressing personal views, and had warned the reporters accordingly, but stated that China would never tolerate “Taiwan independence”. Reportedly, Maj. Gen. Zhu is not directly involved in the formulation of Chinese military strategy.

The U.S. may defend Taiwan under the Taiwan Relations Act and is currently Taiwan’s largest arms supplier.

Use Effective Gardening Tools To Get The Most Of Out Your Garden}

Submitted by: Lisa Houghton

Professional or amateur, all gardeners should use gardening tools to make outdoor tasks faster and more enjoyable.

Gardening is much more enjoyable when you have the right gardening tools. Planting and cultivating different plants and vegetables can become a fantastic hobby.

A proper set of gardening tools allow you to truly enjoy your garden and get more done at once.

Finding the most effective gardening tools

Both amateur and expert gardeners must use a few basic tools. These include rakes, and shovels, for example.

These are used to treat the soil, remove weeds and leaves, and dig holes to plant new seeds. Garden hand tools are important for more specific tasks, such as when you get down and dirty in the garden.

Garden hand tools might include soil aerators, used to mix soil and maintain a high level of essential plant nutrients.

When you are ready to get stuck into a new gardening project, the temptation might be to use your own hands. Before too long, you will realise how much easier and faster it is to use gardening tools.

But do not rush out and buy as many garden tools as you can get your hands on. There is no need to spend vast amounts of money on garden tools that will be of no use to you. It is much more sensible to invest in a small number of tools and gather more as you need them.

This way you wont have to worry about spending too much money or wasting valuable storage space. Sooner or later you will understand exactly which gardening tool is needed for which job that you want to do.

Basic gardening tools and garden hand tools

Gardening shears are tools that no gardener can be without, regardless of skill and experience.

Available in a variety of shapes and sizes, these tools can be used to remove the damaged or dead plants in the garden. Using these gardening tools regularly will keep your plants healthy.

If you have a large garden or are moving multiple materials at once, think about investing in a garden cart.

Dirt, debris, plants, garden tools and larger items can be hauled around using a garden cart. A garden cart is particularly useful for transporting compost from your compost heap to your garden. Alternatively, you can use a wheelbarrow.

Hand trowels are absolute musts for gardeners. They are essential for soil movement, as well as protecting your hands. Many gardeners use trowels to help them weed the garden without accidentally damaging the plants. Hand trowels are suitable for any sized plant.

Gardeners should also have snow shovels handy for winter.
