Scores feared dead in Indonesian landslides after heavy rain

Wednesday, December 26, 2007

Heavy rains in western Indonesia have triggered landslides across the region that have killed dozens of people. Meanwhile, other areas were devastated by major flooding, with water reaching two metres high in some locations.

Search and rescue chief Eko Prayitno in Java told reporters that police, soldiers and volounteers were working together to attempt to reach survivors, some digging with their hands or traditional tools. Heavy equipment is available and efforts are underway to get it into place, he said, but blocked roads are making such efforts difficult.

Prayitno also said that a single landslide in the Karanganyar region buried 61 people who were attending a dinner to celebrate a successful clean up of a house affected by another landslide, which had caused no injuries. “They were having dinner together when they were hit by another landslide… At least 61 people were buried.” Landslides affected the region over a four hour period from 01:00 a.m. to 05:00 a.m. local time. Meanwhile, seventeen people are feared dead in the neighbouring district of Wonogiri, which has also been hit by landslides after twelve hours of nonstop torrential rain.

Andi Mallarangeng, spokesperson for president Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, told reporters “The president sends his deep condolence, and has ordered Home Minister [Mardiono] to inspect the scene [in Karanganyar] and monitor the emergency responses.”

Many fleeing residents have attempted to salvage their possessions, with some using tyres to float television sets and refrigerators to dry ground. Another single massive slide in Tawangmangu, a mountainous resort, buried 37. Metro TV News was told by an eyewitness, identified only as Karsidi, that “Those people were gathering for a tea break during communal works after the rains, and suddenly the land collapsed onto them.”

The affected regions spread across Java, Sumatra and Sulawesi. The population distribution in Indonesia has worsened the situation, with many people living on river flood plains to utilise the fertile soil and many more living in inaccessible mountain regions. The total death toll is estimated at up to 81 people, and eyewitnesses and local media report that thousands of homes are affected.

Landslides are common in Indonesia, where large-scale rainfall is a regular occurrence. This is often exacerbated by deforestation. However, Heru, head of the local disaster coordinator agency in Karang Anyar, commented that “The forest in the area is thick,” and consequently he did not believe deforestation was a causal factor. The region he is responsible for has recorded 36 deaths and 30 more buried in thick mud near the banks of the Bengawan Solo river. Meanwhile Julianto, another provincial government official, said “The landslides took us by surprise. This is the first time in the last 25 years anything of this scale occurred here in Central Java.”

Julianto also commented that thousands of people displaced from their homes by flooding and landslides have been forced into temporary accommodation in buildings and tents provided by emergency response teams.

Today’s disasters coincide with the third anniversary of the Asian tsunami, which killed an estimated 230,000 people. A tsunami drill on Java was unaffected as the seasonal poor weather did not have an adverse affect on the area of the drill.

Public officials, experts discuss lessons learned during West, Texas explosion

Sunday, November 17, 2013

Public officials and other experts gave presentations earlier this week regarding lessons learned during the aftermath of an explosion which struck the small town of West, Texas in April of this year. The event, which was live-streamed to various locations across Texas, was sponsored by the Texas Department of State Health Services as a part of its Grand Rounds seminar offerings. Three officials, each of whom were heavily involved in responding to the event, gave individual presentations.

Frank Patterson, Emergency Management Coordinator for the city of Waco and McLennan County, was the first to speak. Early on, Patterson commented about injuries sustained by citizens of West who lived in the neighborhood surrounding the chemical plant where the explosion occurred. He also said 113 different agencies responded to the event. Specifically, Patterson said, “This was the first time I didn’t have to request federal [agency] support. They just showed up.” He also presented a broad array of photos taken from the blast site and the surrounding neighborhood, pointing out that debris was found as far as 2.5 miles away from the chemical plant. Regarding lessons learned during the days following the explosion, Patterson said all such incident teams need a social media person on-site. He also said, “Stress will take its toll on all involved.”

Dana Lafayette represented the local mental healthcare provider for the county. She explained mental health professionals offered assistance following the blast, but avoided being too intrusive with citizens. Lafayette clarified, “We would walk through [the area] and hand [survivors] water, along with the information cards and say, ‘If you need us, we’re here.'” She also stated, “It was interesting to see the amount of resiliency within the community.”

Kelly Craine, Public Information Officer for Waco-McLennan County Public Health District, also spoke. She indicated her agency’s primary focus was to “create some sort of ‘safe haven’ for victims of the blast.” Craine’s agency used a local church as a gathering place for citizen displaced from their homes as a result of the incident. Notably, speaking about her agency’s after action report, Craine said, “This [event’s] after action report is so big, we’re still working on ours.”

People who need fast cash and don’t have access to credit probably have more options than they at first realize. However, some options are more preferable than others. They may be able to get a loan, but fast-cash loans usually come with high interest rates, and they also must have the means to pay the money back. Selling something at a pawn shop is another possibility. Individuals who do some work on their own vehicles are likely to have used automotive parts in the garage that are just taking up space. They can bring these items to shops that sell used automobile components and pay Cash For a used car part in good working order.

It may be surprising to many people how much these components are worth. A shop that pays Cash For a used car part accepts a large variety of items, but pays a premium for certain ones. Some of those include starter and alternator cores, aluminum and brass radiators, and aluminum tire rims. Some items they sell for scrap metal and some to customers looking for used components. Core parts can be sold to companies that rebuild those automotive components. Many vehicle owners prefer to spend less for a rebuilt starter, for instance, than to pay full price for a new one.

Used tires with little wear also are in demand at these stores. Buying a full set of new tires generally is the best choice, but not everyone can afford this. Replacing two or four old, worn tires with a good set of used ones allows that vehicle owner to safely drive for many more miles. One tire that has blown out or otherwise become ruined can be replaced with a suitable used model as well.

With cash in hand from a store such as The Tire Shop & Used Auto Parts, a person can pay an overdue electric bill, get an appliance fixed or even just do something fun. There’s no feeling of irresponsibility hanging overhead like there might be for taking out a personal loan and spending the money on concert or football tickets. Please visit the website Thetireshophi.com to learn more about getting money for used parts.

Barack Obama presents rescue plan after GM declaration of bankruptcy

Monday, June 1, 2009

In a televised speech from the White House at 16:00 UTC today, President of the United States Barack Obama presented a reorganization plan following the 12:00 UTC announcement by General Motors that it had filed for bankruptcy and Chapter 11 protection from its creditors, the largest bankruptcy of a U.S. manufacturing company.

Describing the problem with the company as one that had been “decades in the making,” Obama explained the rationale behind his proposed reorganization plan for General Motors. He stated that his intent was not to “perpetuat[e] the bad business decisions of the past,” and that loaning General Motors money, when debt was its problem, would have been doing exactly that. His plan, he stated, was for the United States government, in conjunction with the governments of Canada and Ontario (which he thanked for their roles alongside the government of Germany which he thanked for its role in selling a corporate stake in GM Europe), to become shareholders in General Motors. The United States government would hold a 60% stake. The government will give GM a capital infusion of US$30 billion in addition to the funds it has already received.

Of the government ownership he stated that he refused “to let General Motors and Chrysler become wards of the state”, and described the bankruptcy of Chrysler, and the bankruptcy of General Motors that he envisioned as being “quick, surgical, bankruptcies”. He pointed to the bankruptcy of Chrysler as an example of what he envision for General Motors, but stated that General Motors was a “more complex company” than Chrysler.

Responding to challenges voiced by political opponents, before the speech, that the federal government would actively participate in the affairs of the restructured company, he stated that he had “no interest” in running GM, and that the federal government would “refrain from exercising its rights” as a corporate shareholder for the most part. In particular, he stated that the federal government would not exercise its rights as a shareholder to dictate “what new type of car to make.” He stated that he expected the restructured GM to make “high quality, safe, and fuel-efficient cars of tomorrow,” and several times described what he anticipated as “better” and “fuel-efficient” cars, after a streamlining of GM’s brands.

He said to the general public that “I will not pretend that the hard times are over.” He described the financial hardship that some — shareholders, communities based around GM plants, GM dealers, and others — would undergo as a “sacrifice for the next generation” on their parts, so that their children could live in “an America that still makes things,” concluding that one day the United States might return to a time when the maxim (a widely-repeated mis-quotation of what Charles Erwin Wilson once testified before the U.S. Senate when nominated for the position of Secretary of Defense) would once more be true that “what is good for General Motors is good for the United States of America.”

Networked meaning community-ed in the technological dimension Thanks to social networking sites Twitter, facebook, orkut which have literally simulated communication in the real world in all forms(chatting, video conferencing, voice-chat) and media (photos, videos, etc).

Twitter has been making news as a social networking site; not only for its micro-blogging platform, but also for the wider window it gives its users to know what is happening in the twitter community. Updates(news, festivals, holidays) get flashed almost instantly on the home page, giving the seekers what they want in the first step itself.

[youtube]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rinfyz_0I-s[/youtube]

The concept of microblogging has become synonymous with twitter, making it a microcosm of social networking. The restraint of character usage in blog text is an added advantage where the twitterer (user) summarizes his posts in a crisp and concise manner; the blogging potential is thus drilled to bring out more relevant, punchy and short texts- pith and precise to add more meaning to the glance through quick factor. Yes, in the web world, reading has taken a finer edge of browsing but with sustained interest. What s crisp is sure to catch the eye and twitter s interface simply props up the byline of microblogging. Additionally, social networking, as a meaningful and purposeful concept gets a wider scope through twitter. For one, tweets are platform-compatible as most of the devices from your iPAd to mobile phone are twitter-enabled; as against other social networking sites, where the largesse factor comes into the picture, from the site-dimensions to features and utilities and user-base. With other sites, the hi-end interface tends to hinder direct navigation to the objective, forcing the user to take roundabout ways to reach the goal; unlike in twitter, where the methods to reach your objective are direct and simple. Which is why with twitter as the interface your profile (either professional or personal) has a wider scope to have a bigger following(you establish a direct link with people who like you) and a bigger network.

Twitter as a social networking site hosts a wide range of apps the latest being twubble: which helps you find interesting people on twitter, to follow ; twitter local is a service, which helps you find people in your locality, with inputs such as location and the radius of search in your locality; TwitterWho helps you solve the mystery of a friend whose username you don t know or have forgotten; and there is the very interesting apps called twits like me , which will help you find people who share your interests. If you want to track the twitterer with the biggest fan following or some celebrity then simply log onto the twitDir, get a sneak peek into the prolific twitterers.

Moving over to the business arm of Twitter, which as a social networking site; extends and strengthens the bonding of a social community through a binding in trust, commitment and forward, to a business relationship. Some twitter client services designed with the business objective in mind are Hootsuite with an interface to schedule tweets, team management, multiple account management; co-tweet for the corporate users; TweetDeck, which preceded Hootsuite and Co-tweet, serving desktop clients; Buzzom sporting many account management tools such as followers management, people search etc typical for a business requirement.

Twitter started small but made it to achieve big through its short yet impacting tweets on the web-medium. Synchronizing with the Internet-buzz, with services such as web development, graphic design, logo design and a wide spectrum of web-enabled services is Rarefly, web design company Chennai. When you look for web or SEO services India, Rarefly comes to the fore, with customer-satisfaction at the forefront of its quality assurance. In short, Rarefly tweets Expertise with a wide-web of experience , causing a twitter for a bigger turnover of your online business.

40 million credit cards compromised

40 million credit cards compromised

Saturday, June 18, 2005

MasterCard International announced Friday that multiple instances of fraud have been tracked back to CardSystems Solutions, Inc., a company that processes credit card transactions and other payments. Customer names, banks, and account numbers of up to 40 million cardholders have been exposed, of which about 13.9 million are MasterCard-branded cards, the company said. Visa and American Express cards were also affected.

“The breach appears to be the largest yet involving financial data,” said David Sobel, of the Electronic Privacy Information Center.

CardSystems issued a statement late on Friday that said it learned of the potential breach 26 days ago, but that the FBI told the company not to advise the cardholders nor the public at large. CardSystems also said their statement had been vetted by the FBI.

A spokesperson for the FBI said that the agency had asked CardSystems not to disclose information that could compromise the investigation, but that it had not asked CardSystems to fail to disclose the breach at all.

Michael A. Brady, C.F.O. of CardSystems, told the Associated Press that “we’re absolutely blindsided by a press release by the association,” when speaking of MasterCard’s release. A MasterCard spokesperson said that the company was obligated to inform its customers of the breach.

MasterCard spokesperson Sharon Gamsin said that CardSystems was hit by a virus-like computer script that stole customer data for the purpose of fraud. She said MasterCard does not know how the script got into the CardSystem network.

Sobel said this theft “indicates that this is a shadowy industry where the consumer never really knows who is going to be handling and using their personal information. Presumably, the affected consumers thought they were dealing with MasterCard.” Having a third-party process credit card transactions is common practice in the industry.

Militants kill at least 21 Algerian police in ambush
Posted by , No Comments

Thursday, June 18, 2009

Local media stated on Thursday that at least 21 Algerian paramilitary police had been killed after an ambush on their convoy.

The convoy was en route to their barracks at Bordj Bou Arreridj, following an escort of Chinese construction workers to a nearby worksite, located southeast of Algeria’s capital of Algiers, when it was attacked late Wednesday.

Militants detonated no less than two roadside bombs to block the convoy, consisting of six vehicles. They then opened fire on the police before stealing their uniforms, weapons, and vehicles. The militants, as part of Al-Qaeda’s network, are referred to as al-Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb, (AQIM).

Newspaper reports indicated that 21 people had died, while a local official said 23 were killed and a further five had been hospitalized.

A large security operation has started in the area; however, the attack was not immediately confirmed by Algerian authorities.

The militants have been left over from a civil war begun in 1992 between the government and radical Islamists that has killed between 150,000 and 200,000 people. Violence has since diminished, but attacks on government forces still occur.
