Rosemary Cousin, Greens candidate in South Gippsland, Australia, speaks to Wikinews about democracy, transport, forests and other local issues

Sunday, October 3, 2021

Nominations were declared on September 21 for South Gippsland Shire’s upcoming council elections, to be held by post from October 5-22. A total of 24 people in the Australian council’s three wards have put themselves forward to stand as candidates. The shire has been governed by administrators appointed by the Victorian state government since August 2019, when the council was sacked after a state government inquiry found “high levels of tension” within the council.

Wikinews interviewed one of the candidates standing in this election, Rosemary Cousin, via email. Cousin is endorsed by the Australian Greens, and is contesting the Tarwin Valley ward, which elects three councillors to the South Gippsland Shire Council, and includes the towns of Leongatha and Mirboo North.

Runaway EMU train collides with freight train in India

Friday, May 1, 2009

At approximately 06:00 a.m. (00:30 GMT) Wednesday, between four and seven people were killed when an Electric Multiple Unit (EMU) passenger train crashed into a stationary freight train at Vyasarpadi Jeeva station, in Chennai, India. Between eleven and twenty persons were injured, and rushed to General Hospital in Chennai.

Officials are unsure of the number of persons aboard the passenger train, which was operated by an unknown person. “It is not clear who operated (it),” said S. Jayanth, acting general manager of Southern Railway. The operator of the EMU train was not in the train when it left 15 minutes to half an hour before the scheduled departure time. It is said some passengers did board the passenger train.

The EMU train ignored all signals, and drove about 7 kilometers (4 mi) at high speed, jumping tracks, before colliding with the goods train.

The driver of the goods train, Arumugam, has been confirmed as one of those who has died. The goods train was traveling between Arakkonam to Chennai. The motorman, guard and assistant jumped from the goods train sustaining fractures.

“We heard a loud noise and saw several compartments in flames. The smell emanating from bodies from the mangled coaches was nauseating,” said M.N. Selvi, a nearby resident.

The platforms at the Vyasarpadi Jeeva station were destroyed, and electrical cables were torn down. The EMU train caught fire in the collision destroying two compartments completely. The other compartments were thrown from the tracks. The freight train was loaded with oil tanks, however reports indicate that only the EMU train was set ablaze.

All train services were canceled for a time on one of the busiest rail lines of India. “Train services are disrupted due to the mishap but we hope to restore the services in two to three hours time,” an Indian Railways spokesperson.

Railways Minister Lalu Prasad announced that an inquiry will be held.

Indigo Homes is welcoming the State Government s decision to extend the deadline for building boost grant applications to April 30.

Over the next three months, new homebuilders and property investors can still save on construction costs of up to $10,000 if they apply for the Queensland building boost grant.

CEO for Indigo Homes, Chris La Franchi, believes that the grant extension will be a good thing for the market.

Market awareness of the building boost didn t start to pick up until late November, La Franchi said.

I think the next 3 months will see a much better response to the building boost due to more increased awareness in the market than pre-Christmas, the Indigo Homes CEO added.

La Franchi said that the grants are helping to stimulate what is currently a very depressed market, by helping to lessen the price gap between established and new homes.

The Indigo Homes CEO believes that price gap rise was due to increased energy efficiency requirements and other government policies that have driven up the cost of new housing.

The combination of the building boost and potentially further interest rate cuts in February equate to possibly the best time to get into the market for people looking at building in many months, La Franchi said.

The building boost grant is available to eligible Queenslanders looking to buy a home to live or invest in for under $600,000.

According to the State Government, the grant was designed to re-ignite

Queensland s housing construction sector following a combination of falling property transfers and the economic impact of a summer of natural

disasters.

Indigo Homes is also extending its $4000 cash-back offer to coincide with the Government s building boost grant extension, which means further savings of up to $14,000 for home builders and property investors.

Indigo Homes is an award-winning Brisbane-based new home builder with designs for all sites traditional, sloping, small lot and acreage. However Indigo Homes does far more than just build homes.

The Indigo team has been building for so long they ve come to appreciate what the experience can be like for a homeowner particularly one who s about to build for the very first time.

For example, they know it s hard to get rock-solid certainty with some builders about just how much a new home will cost, how long it will take to build, and what kind of quality will actually end up in the finished home compared to what you see in a display home.

They also know that when the process is so involved and new, and the end result so hard to imagine, it s difficult to be hand-on-your heart confident that you re making the right choice.

And with all that going on, it s also easy to see why building can be stressful, draining, and downright confusing. Building a new home can be stressful.

It s why the people at Indigo decided they don t just want to build the most stunningly designed, value-for-money, quality homes they can. They also want to make your building experience as relaxing as possible.

To help, they ve created Your Personal Blueprint, the No Surprises Building Book, the Crystal Clear Pricing Policy, and the Quality You See is the Quality You Get approach to building.

They all complement their wide selection of new home designs

Borussia M’Gladbach sacks coach Schubert; appoints Hecking

Friday, December 23, 2016

Yesterday, German football club Borussia Mönchengladbach announce their appointment of Dieter Hecking as manager until 2019. Hecking’s predecessor André Schubert was sacked the day before, after one year of service at Borussia Park.

Mönchengladbach has won only one out of its last eleven Bundesliga matches this season. Schubert began as an interim manager of the first team after Lucien Facts resigned from the coach position last September. Schubert led Gladbach to the fourth spot in Bundesliga. Schubert’s last match as Gladbach’s coach ended in a 2–1 loss against VfL Wolfsburg and they are just three points ahead of the relegation playoff.

52-year-old Dieter Hecking began his coaching career in 2000 with a second tier club SC Verl. Hecking played most of his professional career matches in 2. Bundesliga.

In 2003–04, Hecking guided VfB Lübeck in DFB Pokal semifinal. He helped 1. FC Nürnberg avoid relegation in 2009–10 and finished sixth in the Bundesliga in the following season. In 2014–15, Hecking won the DFB Pokal and the DfL-Supercup with Wolfsburg and finished the Bundesliga season as runners-up. They qualified for last season’s UEFA Champions League. Hecking was sacked from Wolfsburg in October.

Mönchengladbach’s sporting director Max Eberl said, “We wanted to add fresh impetus after the developments of recent weeks with a new coach. Dieter Hecking is exactly the right man for that. He is a coach with a lot of experience, who has had a lot of success at different levels with different clubs” ((de))German language: ?Nach der Entwicklung der letzten Wochen wollen wir mit einem neuen Trainer einen neuen Impuls setzen. Dafür ist Dieter Hecking genau der richtige Mann, ein Trainer mit viel Erfahrung, der auf unterschiedlichem Niveau mit verschiedenen Vereinen sehr erfolgreich gearbeitet hat.

Science curriculum director resigns from Texas Education Agency

Friday, November 30, 2007

Christine Comer resigned this month as the director of the science curriculum for the Texas Education Agency‘s (TEA) director after more than nine years. Comer said her resignation was due to pressure from officials who claimed she had given the appearance of criticizing the teaching of intelligent design.

According to documents obtained by the Austin American-Statesman, “Comer was put on 30 days paid administrative leave shortly after she forwarded an e-mail in late October announcing a presentation by Barbara Forrest, a critic of the intelligent design/creationist movement. Forrest served as an expert witness at the Kitzmiller v. Dover Area School District trial. At Dover, intelligent design was ruled “a religious view, a mere re-labeling of creationism, and not a scientific theory.” There is widespread scientific support for evolution, while creationism has been described as pseudoscience by the scientific community.

Comer’s resignation comes shortly ahead of the TEA’s State Board of Education (SBOE) reviews of the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS), which determine what should be taught in the classrooms and what textbooks are bought.

The advocacy group Texas Citizens for Science have released a statement saying, in part, “The real reason [Comer] was forced to resign is because the top TEA administrators and some SBOE members wanted her out of the picture before the state science standards—the science TEKS—were reviewed, revised, and rewritten next year. Plans are underway by some SBOE members and TEA administrators to diminish the requirement to teach about evolutionary biology in the Biology TEKS and to require instead that biology instructors ‘Teach the Controversy’ about the ‘weaknesses’ of evolution, that is, teach the Creationist-inspired and -created bogus controversy about evolution that doesn’t exist within legitimate science.”

Professor PZ Myers, biology professor at the University of Minnesota, Morris, wrote that Forrest is “exactly the kind of person boards of education ought to consult before going down the road of attempting to legislate religion into the public schools.”

In reaction to the news Forrest told National Center for Science Education, “In my talk, I simply told the truth — about the history of the ‘intelligent design’ movement, about the complete rejection of its claims by the scientific community, and about the Kitzmiller trial and my involvement in it. Maybe the TEA can’t afford to take a position on what constitutes good science education — maybe it must remain neutral on whether or not to lie to students about evolution — but if so, that’s just sad.”

Agency officials declined to comment, saying it was a personnel issue.

Comparing Used Trailer Prices Online

By Robert Tate

Are you looking for a used trailer? If so, the best place to compare prices is online. This article will give you a guideline of where to look and what to look for when comparing used trailers.

Searching For Used Trailers Online

The best place to start your search for used trailers is in any search engine. Just type in the words “used trailers for sale” and click search. You will be directed to many different sites that offer different types of trailers. You can now start to browse each site and see what is out there. You may also want to check sites that are not listed where people have listed their personal trailers for sale. You may find used trailers on auction websites, local newspaper sites, or even sites such as http://craigslist.com.

Narrowing Down Your Search

You will be overwhelmed with the many different options you have out there on the world wide web when it comes to looking for trailers. The best thing to do in order to find the exact trailer you want is to narrow down your options. There are many ways that you can narrow down you options. For example, you should pick a price range that you are willing to pay for the used trailer. Knowing how much you are going to pay will help you see what trailers are out there that you can actually afford. You also should know which type of trailer you want. There are many different makes and models when it comes to trailers. Knowing exactly which type of trailer you want will also help you find the best used one for you.

Comparing Prices of Trailers Online

Now that you narrowed down your options you are ready to compare the results. The first thing many people look at when it comes to buying used trailers is the price. Comparing the price online is easy because you will be able to see each trailer side by side with the price tag. If you find a trailer online where the price is not specified you will most likely be given contact information. Make sure you do not dismiss the used trailers that do not have a price listed. Calling the company or person that has this trailer for sale is a sure way to make a good deal. You may be passing up an opportunity when ignoring the trailers without a price tag.

Picking Out Your Trailer

Finally, you are ready to pick out the trailer of your choice. Before you pick out the trailer make sure you are not just looking at the price. You want to get the best deal for your money. One trailer may be a bit more expensive that the other but come in a better shape. Spending that extra money may save you the cost of maintenance in the future. Make sure you compare all aspects of the used trailer before you pick out the best one for you. If possible you also want to arrange to go and see the trailer before you decide to buy it. You can never be too safe when dealing with products online. Remember pictures could be deceiving, so arranging to see the item before you buy it is almost a must.

Once you look for the trailers online and do all your research you are now ready to buy the trailer of your choice!

United States: Two killed, more than a hundred injured in Amtrak train collision in South Carolina

United States: Two killed, more than a hundred injured in Amtrak train collision in South Carolina
Posted by , No Comments

Wednesday, February 7, 2018

Early on Sunday morning, Amtrak’s passenger train number 91, the Silver Star, bound for Miami from New York, slammed into a stationary CSX freight train in Cayce, about ten miles (16 km) south of Columbia, capital of the US state of South Carolina. Two Amtrak employees were killed and at least 116 were injured, some seriously.

The two killed were 54-year-old engineer Michael Kempf of Savannah, Georgia, and 36-year-old conductor Michael Cella of Orange Park, Florida. Robert Sumwalt, chairman of the National Transportation Safety Board, told a press conference the passenger train had been diverted into a siding by a switch left “literally locked, with a padlock” in that position.

The collision happened at about 2:35 am local time (0735 UTC) at a switching yard in the small city of Cayce. The Amtrak train, with reportedly 139 passengers and eight employees aboard, collided head on with the freight train, which was parked with no one on board. The Amtrak locomotive and the leading locomotive on the freight train were destroyed; the Amtrak locomotive and some of its passenger cars derailed, and one of those cars was folded in half. Several freight cars were crumpled, Reuters reported. In a press conference, the state governor, Henry McMaster, said the Amtrak locomotive was “barely recognizable” and described it as “a horrible thing to see, to understand the force involved”.

Harrison Cahill, a spokesman for Lexington County, gave a count of 116 injured, up from an initial report of 70; according to Derrec Becker, public information officer for the South Carolina Emergency Management Division, injuries ranged “from cuts and bruises to severe broken bones”. On Monday a Palmetto Health spokesperson said two patients were in serious and two in critical condition at their facilities. A spill of approximately 5,000 gallons of fuel from the freight train posed no safety hazard, according to officials.

Passenger Derek Pettaway told the CNN network that like most others, he had been sleeping when the collision happened. He said Amtrak staff cleared the passengers from the train rapidly, and there was no panic; “I think people were more in shock than anything else”, he said.

“Key to this investigation is learning why the switch was lined that way”, Sumwalt said. Amtrak’s CEO, Richard Anderson, speaking to reporters on Sunday, held CSX responsible; he stated the track in that area is operated by CSX and the signals, which CSX operates, were not working at the time of the collision and a CSX dispatcher was therefore directing the Amtrak train’s movements. Sumwalt noted an automatic monitoring and braking system called positive train control, which was not in use on the stretch of line, could have forestalled the collision.

Several fatal incidents involving Amtrak trains have occurred in the past three months. On December 18, the inaugural train on a new route in Washington state derailed at high speed while crossing above a highway, killing three; on January 31, the driver of a garbage truck was killed in Virginia when he collided with an Amtrak train chartered to take Republican lawmakers to a retreat.

Kim Yo Jong criticizes US-South Korean military drills

Kim Yo Jong criticizes US-South Korean military drills
Posted by , No Comments

Thursday, March 18, 2021

On Monday, Kim Yo Jong, vice department director of the Central Committee of the Workers’ Party of Korea and sister of the North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, warned the United States and South Korea as a reaction to the joint military drills conducted by the US and South Korea.

In a statement released by the Rodong Sinmun, Kim Yo Jong said: “The peaceful spring days of three years ago are unlikely to return”. Arirang News asserted the “peaceful spring” refers to the inter-Korean meetings held in April 2018.

In her statement, Kim described ‘the south Korean authorities’ as “all born with stupidity” and “become the dumb and deaf bereft of judgment”. In response to the drills — which the North Korean government reportedly perceived as a threat — Kim expressed the possibility of closing various inter-Korean organizations like the Committee for the Peaceful Reunification of the Country and the Kumgangsan International Tourism Bureau. “We also examine the issue of dissolving the Kumgangsan International Tourism Bureau and other organizations concerned as any cooperation and exchange with the south Korean authorities antagonizing us are no longer necessary”, Kim said.

Towards the end of the statement, Kim said, “If it [the United States] wants to sleep in peace for coming four years, it had better refrain from causing a stink at its first step.”

Speaking to Arirang News, Yang Moo-Jin, the vice president for public affairs at the University of North Korean Studies, said the message indicates “the regime is willing to talk […] as long as the South [Korean authorities] show some sincerity by not raising tensions through the joint drills”. Lim Eul-chul, a professor of North Korean studies at the Kyungnam University, said the North “is reaffirming its long-held stance that there will be no talks unless sanctions against the regime are lifted”. In an interview with Arirang News, Andrei Lankov, the director of the Korea Risk Group, said the message is nothing out of the ordinary, and similar messages have been coming each spring and the contents of this message are not to be overestimated. He qualified the statement as being “business as usual” and “by the North Korean standards it’s pretty tame”.
