Anonymous muscle in on Canadian teen rape case

Friday, April 12, 2013

On Wednesday, the Internet hacking collective Anonymous vowed to publish the names of the four suspects involved in the alleged rape of Canadian Rehtaeh Parsons, who committed suicide last week.

A message sent to Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) by the hacktivist group called “for immediate legal action” in the case, citing that “If we [Anonymous] were able to locate these boys within 2 hours, it will not be long before someone else finds them.”

This latest operation by the group, dubbed “Operation Justice For Rehtaeh”, led to expression of concern among the members of the RCMP. In an interview with the National Post, Nova Scotia Justice Minister Ross Landry spoke of the dangers of releasing this crucial information in this ongoing investigation, “We don’t want another child taking their life because some vigilante group think it’s OK … maybe it’s a wrong name — then what would they do to someone?”

The 17-year-old Parsons was taken off life support on Sunday following an attempt to take her own life days before. Her mother erected a Facebook page celebrating the life of her daughter as well as acknowledging the true reasons for her daughters tragic passing, “Rehtaeh is gone today because of the four boys that thought that raping a 15-year-old girl was okay, and to distribute a photo to ruin her spirit and reputation would be fun.”

G7 says “all available tools” will be used to solve crisis

Saturday, October 11, 2008

In the midst of the intensifying global financial crisis, finance ministers and central bankers of the G7 nations – Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United States, and the United Kingdom – met in Washington, D.C. and released a joint statement.

With failures of large financial institutions in the United States, the crisis rapidly evolved into a global crisis resulting in bank failures in Europe and the Americas, and sharp reductions in the value of stocks and commodities worldwide. The crisis further lead to a liquidity problem and the de-leveraging of world assets, which further accelerated the problem. The crisis has roots in the subprime mortgage crisis and is an acute phase of the financial crisis of 2007–2008.

After the meeting, a joint statement was released with a commitment to “stabilize financial markets and restore the flow of credit.” The statement outlined five steps to achieve these goals:

 1. Take decisive action and use all available tools to support systemically important financial institutions and prevent their failure.
 2. Take all necessary steps to unfreeze credit and money markets and ensure that banks and other financial institutions have broad access to liquidity and funding.
 3. Ensure that our banks and other major financial intermediaries, as needed, can raise capital from public as well as private sources, in sufficient amounts to re-establish confidence and permit them to continue lending to households and businesses.
 4. Ensure that our respective national deposit insurance and guarantee programs are robust and consistent so that our retail depositors will continue to have confidence in the safety of their deposits.
 5. Take action, where appropriate, to restart the secondary markets for mortgages and other securitized assets. Accurate valuation and transparent disclosure of assets and consistent implementation of high quality accounting standards are necessary.

“Central banks from around the world have acted together to provide additional liquidity for financial institutions, taking the necessary steps to support the global economy,” said US Secretary of the Treasury Henry Paulson in a statement after the meeting.

“We have taken a lot of actions,” said European Central Bank President Jean-Claude Trichet. “My experience of markets is that it always takes a little time to capture the elements [of the decisions taken].”

The Governor of the Bank of England Mervyn King said: “Central banks will work together as we demonstrated this week, to ensure sufficient short term liquidity is provided to stabilise banking systems. But it is also vital that governments work together to ensure their banking systems are recapitalised to enable them to lend to finance spending in the real economy.”

Purple is a rich, sometimes regally beautiful color that can add grace and sophistication to any space. However, it ranges over a wide expanse of hues, some with red undertones and other with blue. And because it can range from neon raspberry to regal amethyst, it can be a difficult color to work with. For many people, purple spells ‘decorating disaster’, but in reality it can be a very tranquil and serene color. If you’d like to try something a little off the beaten path in your master bedroom, try purple. But pay heed to the following tips so that your decorating risk will have a rewarding outcome.

Accessorize with Purple

Rather than bathe the room in purple, try it in accents like wall art, bedding, window treatments, throw pillows and accessories. Contrasted against a neutral shade, like pale gray and white, a shade of purple, such as lavender, can have a very stately effect. For a more dramatic look, try deep purple and other jewel tones against a pastel or warm neutral backdrop.

Understand Undertones

Be wary when mixing shades of purple: Some shades can have very strong red undertones, while others are distinctly blue. Mixing the two can have disastrous chaotic results on the aura of your room, which is the last thing you want, especially in a bedroom. For best results, use only one shade of purple or mix shades with the same undertones; i.e., if you don’t understand undertones, choose only one shade of purple.

Harmonize the Walls

If you find two shades of purple that work well together, you can combine them to create a distinctive look on the walls. As a help, most paint stores carry color cards that display three or four harmonious color combinations. Choose a card that contains two shades of purple: Add a chair rail to the room and paint the lower half of the walls in the darker shade of purple. Use blue painter’s tape to paint vertical stripes of the lighter shade and another light color from the combo, like ivory, above the chair rail. This will give your room a very chic coordinated look, especially if you use the ivory or light neutral shade in accents like wall shelves, wall art, lamps, furniture and accessories.

Getting Help and Choosing the Right Purple

If you feel a little overwhelmed by the thought of decorating with purple, talk to the professionals in the paint department of your favorite hardware or home improvement store; they’ll be happy to guide you. Also, check out magazines, interior design books and Internet sites for decor ideas that you can adapt to your room and style. Lastly, when you’ve narrowed down your choices to one or two, paint a square of each color on the wall of your bedroom and observe how the color looks at different times of day, under artificial and natural light, before making a final decision. This will keep you from choosing a purple that looks great in the store but not so great on your walls.

Chinese short movie mocks Kim Jong il and his secret agent

Saturday, January 20, 2007

North Korea’s 007, a currently very popular short movie by some Chinese netizens, mocks Kim Jong Il and his secret agent buying Hennessy XO wine from Chinese black market.

As of 3:27 AM, January 20, 2007, China Standard Time, the movie has been watched 1,993,567 times on a single site (6rooms.com) and received 1620 comments.

The talks between the North Koreans are in English; the talks between the agent and the Chinese are in Chinese (now featuring English subtitles). The story part situated in China is as follows:

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

The agent first went to a grocery where he didn’t find XO, then to a wine store which sells XO, but he complained about the price being much more expensive than the price quoted on the Internet. His accent surprised a girl who recognized his North Korean identity and the saleswoman rejected his buying due to “resulting UN security council penalty.” The agent left the store and a white-coated fat man (a black market wine seller) and a black-coated man followed.

The agent checked in at a hotel and received 3 phone calls; one from his commander urging him forward on the mission, one from a whore offering “special service” (to whom the agent replied with “Yes, I need, I need a bottle of XO!”), and one from the fat man asking him to go to a disco bar for XO trading. He went to the bar and watched the fat man dancing to “We Were Forced to Be Gangs” (the music is Michael Jackson’s “Beat It”). The fat man found the agent’s money was fake (which the agent explained was because North Korea wanted to “ease the pressure that the hostile West put on China for currency appreciation”) and a fight ensued. The fat man was defeated and said “Your country is not based on honesty” while the agent said in his mind, “No honesty for your revisionist country.”

The agent is about to cross the China-North Korea border and the black-coated man caught up and defeated him by breaking his “Kim Jong Il medal” (which is a devastating psychological strike to North Koreans). The black-coated man revealed himself to be George W. Bush and some Chinese bystanders questioned him on why he hung Saddam (“One Saddam is down but a million Saddams will be up!”) and drove him away. The curious Chinese bystanders accidentally broke the agent’s XO which resulted in another devastating episode. The white-coated fat man reappeared and said he saw the whole event and was impressed by the agent and gave away another bottle of XO to him.

The agent returned to North Korea and presented the XO to Kim Jong Il (on their way to Kim’s residence their eyes were covered in order not to “give the Americans a chance to pinpoint Kim’s precise location”). Kim immediately died because the wine was faked and poisonous.

Sky purchases UK Glee rights

Tuesday, June 14, 2011

Subscription channel Sky has purchased the rights to broadcast US television programme Glee in the United Kingdom. New episodes of the show are anticipated to commence airing on BSkyB television station Sky1 during the autumn of this year.

Channel 4, who have been broadcasting the programme from its first episode until the end of the second season, rejected the opportunity to involve themselves in broadcasting rights negotiations in May of this year. According to reports, Sky had placed an offer of £12 million for season three episodes, in excess of twice the total Channel 4 had provided for seasons one and two.

Describing the programme as “part of a long-term commitment to investing in programming – both originated and acquired – that will continue to deliver the best choice, quality and value to our customers,” Stuart Murphy, Sky’s programme director, described Glee as “the perfect fit for Sky1 and we’re thrilled to be able to build on the success it has already achieved.” In the run-up to the premiere of the third season, a show entitled The Glee Project will be aired on Sky1. This programme consists of members of the Glee production staff will attempt to locate a performer they deem suitable for appearing in various season three episodes.

Channel 4 first broadcast Glee in the UK on January 12, 2010. According to NME, audience viewing figures of 1.14 million were recorded at this stage. During the second season, first airing on January 10, 2011, ratings of 1.61 million were noted. At its peak, Glee achieved viewing figures of 2.6 million amongst series two, according to BBC News Online, placing Glee amongst the most watched shows aired on digital channel E4. The final episode of the second season was broadcast on E4 Monday, making this the final episode provided as ‘free-to-air’, due to Sky being a subscription service.

Ian Brennan, a writer for Glee, has informed E! of modifications to the line-up of actors appearing in the programme, noting that “we would be missing a beat if we didn’t acknowledge the fact that a huge part of high school is graduating from high school”. Although not all of the entire cast list will be replaced, “some of the cast will graduate”, Brennan stated.

Refinance Home: Do’s And Don’ts

By Rony Walker

While walking your dog, you may have seen rows of houses for sale. You want one of those brick houses with three bedrooms to accommodate a growing brood of kids. The possibility is not remote if your home’s value has increased considerably. A refinance home scheme may let you enter one of those bigger homes.

Ready to Jump Through Hoops?

For your first mortgage, you had to undergo a paper chase to satisfy the requirements of the mortgage company. This experience will serve you well. But for your refinance home project, there are still some do’s and don’ts to observe to give yourself the upper hand when entering a contract.

So check your documents. Are your tax income papers in order? Is your credit history satisfactory? Is your employment record updated? Are the records of the first mortgage complete and neatly filed? These are just some of the documents to prepare. Looking for lost documents or calling up certain offices for your records eat up your valuable time just when the refinance home loan agent is ready to talk to you.

When you’re ready for an audience with the loan agent, make sure you’ve done your homework. You should know about mortgages before signing a contract. One simple rule is: don’t rush into a refinance home loan.

The Do’s

Find out about your home’s value. If this has increased, expect to pay more for the mortgage. But settle on a company that offers a lower interest rate than your present mortgage. The new loan should be able to give you 2% less in interest rates than your current loan.

Do shop for lower interest rates. You may be surprised that an adjustable mortgage rate is lower than a fixed mortgage rate. The catch, though, is the possibility that your monthly bills might shoot up. Consider this if this is not a risk.

Do ask about penalties for loan prepayment and getting out of the contract. The loan agent should make it clear that you have the right to rescind the contract within three days, which is the rescission period.

Do make sure that if you’re going to resort to this option, let the refinance home company know of your decision and your reasons through a formal letter followed up with a telephone call to the right people before the 12PM deadline on the third day.

Do check the company’s background if you’re using a new mortgage company. With several mortgage companies competing for business, you might fall for a lousy deal with the lure of very low interest rates and no closing fees.

The Don’ts

Don’t be rushed into a home refinance loan, and don’t be afraid or intimidated by the mortgage companies. Check out online sites that provide information on consumer rights.

Don’t entertain calls purportedly coming from companies requesting more information. Go to the company office. Inform them of the request for additional information and verify if indeed this request came from them.

Don’t entertain strangers offering a better deal and cash even if they give their credentials. Tell them you prefer to discuss things in their office. Don’t sign anything. Some people lost their homes to scammers because of those nice strangers.

These tips can help you safeguard yourself from getting duped into dubious deals. Your new loan should be your chance to own a home, not lose it.

Iraqi restaurant hit by suicide bomber

Thursday, December 11, 2008

A suicide bombing in Iraq has killed at least 55 people and injured at least 120 more, according to local police. The suicide bomber struck at a restaurant located about 2 miles north of the ethnically mixed city of Kirkuk on Thursday morning. The Abdullah restaurant, where the explosion took place, is popular among Kurdish officials. The attack comes on the Muslim religious holiday Eid al-Adha, known in English as the “Festival of Sacrifice”.

At the time the restaurant was struck, it was full of families marking the final day of Eid. Five women and three children were among the dead.

Kirkuk is the scene of ongoing ethnic tensions, although the reasons for this attack in particular are currently unknown.

Salam Abdullah, 45, was one of the people in the restaurant at the time of the attack. “I held my wife and led her outside the place. As we were leaving, I saw dead bodies soaked with blood and huge destruction,” he stated, commenting on his experiences. “We waited outside the restaurant for some minutes. Then an ambulance took us to the hospital.”

Awad al-Jubouri, who was injured in the incident, condemned the bombers. “I do not know how a group like al-Qaida claiming to be Islamic plans to attack and kill people on sacred days like Eid. We were only meeting to discuss our problems with the Kurds and trying to impose peace among Muslims in Kirkuk.” Jubouri is a tribal leader, who was attending a lunch that was intended to precede a meeting discussing was to lessen tensions between local communities.

Last July, an affiliated restaurant of the same name was the site of a suicide bombing which claimed the lives of six and wounded twenty five.

Civil Rights lawyer Oliver Hill dies

Sunday, August 5, 2007

Oliver Hill, an American Civil Rights lawyer died today at the age of 100. Hill was attending breakfast, when he died “peacefully,” said a friend of Hill’s family, Joseph Morrissey. The cause is not yet known.

“As a pioneer for civil rights, an accomplished attorney, and a war veteran, Mr. Hill’s dedication to serving the commonwealth and the country never failed,” said Virginia Governor, Tim Kaine in a statement released to the press.

Hill won African American teachers the right to have equal pay in 1940, which was the first civil rights case he won in his career.

He was also the first African American to be elected to the city council in Richmond, Virginia in 1948.

Hill also filed several lawsuits against racial segregation in the U.S. public school systems in 1954. Those lawsuits later became as the ‘Brown vs. Board‘ which overturned laws dating back to 1896 which ruled that separate schools for African Americans and White Americans were “unequal.”

China overtakes Germany as world’s biggest exporter
Posted by , No Comments

Sunday, January 10, 2010

Chinese officials have said that their country’s exports surged last December to edge out Germany as the world’s biggest exporter.

The official Xinhua news agency reported today that figures from the General Administration for Customs showed that exports jumped 17.7% in December from a year earlier. Over the whole of 2009 total Chinese exports reached US$1.2 trillion, above Germany’s forecast $1.17 trillion.

Huang Guohua, a statistics official with the customs administration, said the December exports rebound was an important turning point for China’s export sector. He commented that the jump was an indication that exporters have emerged from their downslide.

“We can say that China’s export enterprises have completely emerged from their all-time low in exports,” he said.

However, although China overtook Germany in exports, China’s total foreign trade — both exports and imports — fell 13.9% last year.
