US stock markets dropped to twelve-year lows on Thursday, amidst falling confidence in the financial sector and worries over whether the US automobile manufacturer General Motors will be able to keep operating.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped by 4.08%, or 280.52 points, at the closing bell, reaching a level of 6595.32, a new 12-year low. The Nasdaq Composite lost 54.15 points, or 4%, to 1299.59, while the Standard & Poor’s 500 plunged by 30.27 points, or 4.25%, closing at 682.60.
Every stock in the Dow Jones, other than Wal-Mart, either lost ground or remained even, and all stocks in the S&P 500 index lost ground.
General Motors’ shares lost 15.5% after the auto firm announced that its auditors had “substantial doubt” over whether it would be able to keep operating.
Shares of financial companies were lower by nine percent, with Bank of America losing 11.7% and Citigroup falling by 9.7%.
“What’s most worrisome is that we haven’t hit the crescendo yet,” said Bill Groeneveld, the head trader for vFinance Investments. “Asset-management divisions are getting calls to just liquidate everything, and we haven’t seen the big players come back in at all.”
“This is one of the worst bear markets in the last 100 years; it started out with the credit crisis and the subprime [loans], but it is like a forest fire that has raced across the clearing and ignited other parts: Autos, auto parts, the insurance companies have been hit very hard. The credit crisis is causing an unraveling of industry after industry because the banks don’t lend,” said David Dreman, the chief investment officer of Dreman Value Management.
European markets were also lower today, with the London’s FTSE index losing 3.2% and the DAX index of Germany falling by five percent.

While nearly all coverage of the 2008 Presidential election has focused on the Democratic and Republican candidates, the race for the White House also includes independents and third party candidates. These parties represent a variety of views that may not be acknowledged by the major party platforms.
Wikinews has impartially reached out to these candidates, throughout the campaign. We now interview independent Presidential candidate Ruth Bryant White, an ordained Christian minister, author, and homemaker.

So, youve been thinking about getting non-corrective, decorative contact lenses to turn your eyes from a brown to blue before you spend your hard-earned money, do you know the risks associated with those cool lenses? Did you know that contact lenses are part of a product line that must be authorized by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) prior to distribution? You may be wondering why non-corrective, decorative contact lenses need to be approved by the FDA? The answer to that question lies in the nature of contact lenses.
A contact lens is a thin, convex plastic covering that is placed directly over your cornea. If fitted improperly, the contact lens can damage your eye resulting in discomfort, temporary or even permanent vision loss. Contact lenses can be purchased from eye-care professionals licensed by the FDA, yet decorative lenses are often purchased in beauty salons, record and video stores, flea markets, convenience stores, beach shops, and various other retail locations. Dr. Victor Crosby, an ophthalmologist located in Athens, Ga. sees cases on a regular basis involving teenage patients who obtain decorative lenses from local flea markets. In one such case, a teenage female patient ended up in the emergency room after wearing the lenses for a few days. She suffered from a burning, redness, and sensitivity to light in both eyes. Dr. Crosby states, The main problem was a poor lens fit. Contac lenses that are too tight can damage the cornea. The patient was treated by a topical steroid antibiotic over six days, recovering completely.
Yet, not everyone is as lucky. Thomas Steinemann, director of the Metro-Health Eye Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio tells us of one of worst cases involving non-corrective, decorative contact lenses ever reported to the FDA. In September 2001, a 14-year-old female suffered from an aggressive infection caused by the Pseudomonas bacteria in one of her eyes. She wanted to turn brown eyes green to match an outfit, Steinemann says. The result was a lot of pain and suffering. Not only could the teenager lose vision from this infection, but they could lose the eye. The patient needed to be hospitalized and treated with antibiotic drops every thirty minutes over four days. Though the infection was eradicated through aggressive topical therapy, the eye remained inflamed for a long time. As a result of her use of unapproved decorative contact lens, the patient lost vision in the infected eye for two months. After that period of time, just when it seemed like her vision had returned, scar tissue formed resulting in further vision loss. In June 2002, Dr. Steinemann performed a corneal transplant, removing the diseased cornea and replacing it with a donated cornea. Recovery from this type of transplant takes about a year, yet there is no guarantee that her vision will ever be fully restored.
While non-corrective, decorative contact lenses may be fashionable, a certain amount of responsibility must be exercised when being purchased. Getting an eye-exam, a valid prescription, and purchasing any contact lenses from an eye-care licensed professional are just a few things that can be done to protect your eyes while still looking fashionable. Finally, properly maintaining and cleaning your lenses will prevent any bacterial infections. Whether you need corrective contact lenses or simply want to change your look to remain fashionable, if you take care of your eyes, they will take care of you.

A Pembroke Pines, Florida teenager killed himself Wednesday, November 19, while broadcasting on the live video site Justin.tv. After making suicide threats and being encouraged by Justin.tv viewers and Bodybuilding.com forum members, Abraham K. Biggs, 19, committed suicide by taking an overdose of opiates and benzodiazepine, which had been prescribed for his bipolar disorder.
Biggs first began blogging about his planned suicide 12 hours before the actual event. He died after taking pills and lying on the bed in front of the webcam. After the broadcast, viewers who apparently thought it was a hoax posted messages such as “OMG”, “LOL”, and “hahahah”.
Hours later, after being alerted by viewers who had noticed that Biggs had stopped breathing, law enforcement and paramedics arrived, discovered his body, and covered the camera. The Broward County Medical Examiner’s Office has reportedly confirmed Biggs’ death.
According to Montana Miller of the Bowling Green State University, the circumstances of this case were not shocking: “If it’s not recorded or documented, then it doesn’t even seem worthwhile. For today’s generation it might seem, ‘What’s the point of doing it if everyone isn’t going to see it?'”
Biggs’ sister Rosalind was angry that neither the website nor its viewers reacted soon enough to save him. “They got hits, they got viewers, nothing happened for hours,” she said. She described him as “very happy” and “friendly and outgoing.” “On a normal day, you couldn’t really tell that he got as low as he did.” However, he did have relationship problems with his girlfriend, according to a friend.
Mental health professionals have warned about the possibility that other mentally troubled people would copy his actions. According to Dr. David Shaffer of Columbia University, “Any video showing it as heroic or romantic or glamorous could reduce the anxiety people might feel about suicide. It becomes a respectable behavior and lowers the threshold of suicide.” He and other psychiatrists recommend that potentially suicidal teens talk to others and “tell what’s going on.”

Two Australian Paralympic wheelchair basketball players, Shelley Chaplin and Leanne Del Toso, are cycling around Fiji to raise money for people in Fiji with disabilities. They hope to cover the route, which is roughly 500 kilometers (300 miles) long, in just ten days. They started on June 7, 2013 and plan to finish by June 16.
Along the way, they intend to do outreach, and mentor people with disabilities. They hope to raise A$13,000. So far, they have raised over A$12,400. They are using crowdfunding to finance their sporting event.
Del Toso suffered muscle deterioration in her legs and hands due to a degenerative neurological condition when she was 19, and rides her bike with the aid of orthotics. Chaplin was born a paraplegic, and is using a handcycle.
They won silver medals at the 2012 Summer Paralympics in London with the Australia women’s national wheelchair basketball team, commonly known as the Gliders.
Both also played for Victoria in Round One of the Australia Women’s Wheelchair Basketball League (WNWBL) competition last weekend. Victoria won all four of its games. They expect to be back in action again in Round Two in Perth on June 21–23.

In a warehouse, there are numerous safety hazards that make the job a dangerous one if all employees don’t understand how to mitigate those dangers. The very nature of a warehouse means that there will be workers working alongside large and dangerous equipment, making it crucial to have a warehouse safety manual / IIPP for every employee. By understanding the dangers that exist and what they can do to protect themselves, both the employees and the company will be better protected from safety catastrophes.
Large Machinery and Warehouses
Getting inventory moved and sorted are big parts of a warehouse worker’s job. Crushing hazards exist for a forklift operator if all safety precautions aren’t taken. However, operating a forklift isn’t the only job that puts people in danger around these machines. The employees who work alongside the forklift must also be properly taught what to do and not do when the forklift is near them.
Other large machinery may include conveyers, trucks and mechanized dock plates. Working around the docks is particularly dangerous for employees who don’t have all the information they need to stay safe from injuries. If the dock plates are not used correctly, a number of dangers will exist for employees. The warehouse safety manual / IIPP must teach employees how to use their equipment correctly to avoid crushing, falling and amputation injuries in the docks and other parts of the warehouse.
Lifting and Other Movement Injuries
Many of the injuries on the warehouse floor are caused by improper lifting of inventory and other items. Lifting heavy items calls for very specific training, and the right warehouse safety manual / IIPP can teach employees exactly how to do it safely. When the proper motions are combined with the right safety equipment, employees can keep themselves from back, neck and leg injuries caused by unsafe lifting.
Employees should also understand when they should not lift an item and use lifting equipment instead. When repetitive motions are necessary, employees need to understand how to use the best ergonomic positioning to avoid repetitive motion injuries. Employees should stay in communication with management about when there are problems on the warehouse floor that make it harder to move safely and when there are slip and trip hazards that must be cleaned up. Reading the safety manual will give employees the training they need to avoid simple mistakes that can lead to serious, preventable injuries.
Fire Safety
Fires are a constant danger in any warehouse. Sparks, electrical ignition and heat from hot work can cause fires that can get out of control quickly. Employees should understand exactly where the fire extinguishers and fire alarm pulls are located and how to use each properly. By studying about fire safety in the warehouse, employees can learn to lower the likelihood of a fire breaking out and to put out a fire quickly if it should start. Knowing how to evacuate the warehouse in the event of an emergency is another important part of the training.
Identifying Dangers
One of the ways that workers can help management with maintaining the safety of the warehouse is by knowing when to communicate with them about potential safety hazards. In a warehouse safety manual / IIPP, employees learn when something may be unsafe and how to handle that danger. They are taught how to stay in communication about the problems they find on the warehouse floor.
Every warehouse team needs the proper training to identify and avoid the many dangers that exist. With a safety manual from workplacesafetymanuals.com, they can get the information they need to keep themselves and their fellow workers from harm.

According to a report by the Pew Internet & American Life Project, 9 out of 10 Internet users have adjusted their online behaviour because of spyware. Of the 2,001 adults surveyed, 97% said that they had heard of the term spyware and 78% said they “had a good idea what the term meant.”
61% said they were very confident or somewhat confident they could keep thingslike computer viruses, spyware and adware off their computers. However, 34% said they have had spyware on their home computers. This number is probably much higher. In an October 2004 study, by AOL and the National Cyber Security Alliance, 53% of respondents said they had spyware or adware on their computers, but a scan showed that 80% of respondents actually had such programs installed.
68% of home internet users report that they have experienced problems that are normally associated with spyware. These problems include computers slowing down or crashing, new unfamiliar programs appearing on their computers and Internet home page changing without user action.
49% consider spyware to be a serious threat to their online security. 91% of internet users say they have made at least one change in their online behaviour as a result of spyware. 34% have stopped downloading programs from the Internet. 89% said they do not open email attachments unless they are sure they are safe. 25% say they have stopped using peer-to-peer networks, a common source of spyware. 8% say they have switched to a different web browser.
The Pew Internet & American Life Project report was based based upon a telephone survey conducted by Princeton Survey Research Associates between May 4 and June 7, 2005. The Pew Internet & American Life Project is a non-profit research centre that produces reports that study the social effects of the Internet.
67% percent of homes in the United States now have internet connectivity.

B2B Trade Area of Taipei Game Show, criticized by trade buyers last year, but accompanied with 2008 Taiwan Digital Content Forum, moved to the second floor at Taipei World Trade Center for world-wide participants with a better exchange atmosphere this year.
Not only local OBMs (Softstar Entertainment, Soft-World International Corp., International Games System Corp., …, etc.) but also companies from New Zealand, Canada, Japan, Hong Kong, and South Korea showcased different specialists with multiple styles. Especially on South Korea, participated members from G? Trade Show (Game Show & Trade, All-Round, aka Gstar) showcased gaming industry of South Korea and the G? upcoming at this November with brochures.

With participations from governmental, industrial, and academical executives world-wide, this forum helps them gained precious experiences of digital content industry from several countries.
According to the Taipei Computer Association, the show and forum organizer, the digital content industry in Taiwan was apparently grown up recent years as Minister of Economic Affairs of the Republic of China Steve Ruey-long Chen said at Opening Ceremony yesterday. Without R&Ds from cyber-gaming, and basic conceptions from policies and copyright issues, this (digital content) industry will be fallen down in Taiwan. If this industry wanted to be grown up in sustainability, gaming OBMs in Taiwan should independently produce different and unique games and change market style to market brands and games to the world.

The Marussia F1 team’s test driver, Spaniard María de Villota, was taken to hospital by air ambulance today after a collision in testing at Duxford Aerodrome.
At the end of her first installation run, the car she was driving had a low-speed collision with the loading ramp of the team’s support truck. According to BBC Cambridgeshire presenter Chris Mann, the car “suddenly accelerated” into the rear of the vehicle. The Marussia team released a statement an hour and a half after the accident, stating that she had been transferred to hospital, and a further statement would be issued once her condition had been assessed.
A spokesman for the East of England ambulance service, Gary Sanderson, said de Villota had “[…] sustained life-threatening injuries and following treatment at the scene by paramedics, she has been taken to Addenbrooke’s Hospital for further care.” According to witnesses, she was motionless for about fifteen minutes as medical teams attended to her, but did move her hands before being taken away from the test track. Medical charity Magpas, whose volunteer paramedics attended the accident, reported she had sustained injuries to her head and face, and was in a ‘stable condition’ when she reached the hospital.
Marussia reported her as conscious later in the afternoon: “Since Maria’s arrival at the hospital at approximately 10.45am this morning, she has been receiving the best medical attention possible at the hospital, which is the region’s major trauma centre. Maria is conscious and medical assessments are ongoing. The team will await the outcome of these assessments before providing further comment. The team’s first priority at this time is Maria and her family.”
De Villota was announced as Marussia’s test driver in March, having prior experience driving for Alan Docking Racing in Superleague Formula in Spain.

On January 11, 2007, according to foreign media reports, the past several days of CES is basically two personal computer development mode of competition, one is a Google’s Anroid system, it represents the personal computer industry development trends, and the other is a Microsoft Windows, it represents the current development hotspot. A bit more specific, use the Android system of MOTOROLA – Nvidia alliance and Microsoft – Intel alliance respectively is representative of these two modes.
MOTOROLA – Nvidia
MOTOROLA and Nvidia booth demonstrated for future development of expectations. Various Android tablet PC, high-end Android smartphone and MOTOROLA new technology Atrix 4G, etc. MOTOROLA booth is undoubtedly CES in most eye-catching booths, one of the most outside the Atrix 4G is put the prototype, behind is XOOM tablet PC, both the CES in star product, is also used Tegra dual-core processor Nvidia 2.
The author is expected to iPad Xoom will become one of the most powerful opponent, like Droid replace the iPhone upstaged the same. Obviously, MOTOROLA treated using Android Honeycomb system Xoom design very seriously, and there are no other similar products of the limelight can cover over it. Obviously, the future PC purchaser attention would turn to Droid and Xoom.
Nvidia booth is all is to use its energy-saving ARM chip design of the tablet PC Tegra processor. But the original strengths, used for Nvidia gameplay PC’s card, this is retired two. The two companies on the future development of eye on reached an agreement that would be to PC packed in his pocket. Nvidia bet on the ARM chips and MOTOROLA, placing their hopes on its Nvidia CPU.
Microsoft – Intel
Microsoft and Intel booth sight is quite different than usual, visitors is not in computer sales store. Although Microsoft has Kinect technology plays, Intel’s Sandy Bridge processor is also far within the industry leading, but they are not flat computer development in the future of main elements.
With Microsoft CES stalls of Windows 7 Asus Eee Slate, for example, to its evaluation can be summarized as: not beautiful, bulky, configure the notebook grades of Intel Core i5 processor, anyhow the impression is not deep.
At the other end of the Microsoft booth, a few months ago also attractive dye-in-the-wood Windows 7 product has now been light no longer. Such as Internet blundell Inspiron Duo, even they booth person-in-charge of its evaluation are “is too thick. He and I are said prefer samsung to Internet with flat computer sliding keyboard design.
Microsoft’s next door is Intel booth, display a lot of laptop computers and the Internet, including many design this light, but without exception nothing new. Even though the Internet this market Intel monopoly, also has shifted use on the Micro processor Fusion redetect, basic is 11 inches and 12 inches of super portable products. So, Microsoft – Intel league next year’s CES and what performance? Perhaps their alliance will collapse, and their respective seek different directions.
As Microsoft and OEM partners into flat market was the same, except hardware equipment business outside, a few peripheral area, such as browser vendors r&d products to enter this popular. Norway software manufacturer of Opera a few days ago foreign hurried shows designed for Tablet computer design of a web browser Opera for Tablet, have also issued a formal. On CES Amazon against Android and Windows system tablet PC, roll out corresponding Kindle custom application service, there will be multiple equipment manufacturers in CES Kindle application service has shown on the new machine.
