Rachel Weisz wants Botox ban for actors

Tuesday, July 7, 2009

English actress Rachel Weisz thinks that Botox injections should be banned for all actors.

The 39-year-old actress, best known for her roles in the Mummy movie franchise and for her Academy Award-winning portrayal in The Constant Gardener, feels facial Botox injections leave actors less able to convey emotion and that it harms the acting industry as much as steroids harm athletes.

In an interview with UK’s Harper’s Bazaar, coming out next month, Weisz says, “It should be banned for actors, as steroids are for sportsmen,” she claims. “Acting is all about expression; why would you want to iron out a frown?”

Currently living in New York, she also mentions that English women are much less worried about their physical appearance than in the United States. “I love the way girls in London dress,” she claimed. “It’s so different to the American ‘blow-dry and immaculate grooming’ thing.”

Transit strike affects 100,000 in Helsinki

Monday, March 6, 2006

In Helsinki, the Finnish trade union for bus and truck drivers has gone on strike on Sunday evening, mainly over the use of part-time labor. The strike is estimated to affect 100,000 people in the capital area, crowding the remaining transit system on Monday morning. The strike is halting almost half of all bus traffic in and around Helsinki, especially hurting travellers commuting from outlying cities Espoo and Vantaa, where over 60% of bus traffic will be stopped.

The strike also affects 4,000 of Finland’s 55,000 delivery trucks, as well as waste management in many areas. The strike is not affecting trains, trams or the underground, but heavy crowding is to be expected. Authorities are also warning of traffic jams during rush-hours as people use personal cars instead of public transportation.

Those planning a trip that combines a visit to northern Thailand and a stay in Yangon and/or Mandalay in neighbouring Myanmar, now have more choice in flights thanks to new direct services launched in October.

The new flights to Myanmar operate out of Chiang Mai, Thailands second largest city, and are among four new non-stop services introduced by Bangkok Airways, which Skytrax named Worlds Best Regional Airline 2014 and Best Regional Airline Asia 2014.

The four times weekly service between Chiang Mai and Yangon is on a Sunday, Monday, Friday and Saturday, the outbound flight departing Chiang Mai at 11 am and the inbound flight departing Yangon at 12.50 pm. The three times weekly service between Chiang Mai and Mandalay is on a Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday, the outbound flight departing Chiang Mai at 11 am and the inbound flight departing Mandalay at 12.50 pm. Both routes use an ATR72-500 aircraft with 70 seat capacity.

The other two new services are between Chiang Mai and Udon Thani in northeast Thailand, twice daily and also using a 70 seat ATR72-500, and between Chiang Mai and Phuket, once daily using an Airbus A320 with 162 seat capacity.

Bangkok Airways also flies from Chiang Mai to Myanmars capital of Nay Pyi Taw, and from Bangkok to Yangon, Mandalay and Nay Pyi Taw.

Bangkok Airways vice president – sales Ariya Prasarttong-Osoth said the airline foresaw the northern Thai city as another important hub for Thailands tourism industry and considered it a gateway to Indochina. By utilizing Chiang Mai International Airport as another hub, it will enhance Bangkok Airways ability to support the growing demand for air travel when the AEC (Asean Economic Community) takes place in 2015. It will also allow us to provide better flight connections for our passengers who wish to continue their travel to the Northeastern and Southern part of Thailand as well as to the neighbouring country Myanmar without having to fly back to (Bangkoks) Suvarnabhumi Airport to connect to those destinations.

In the past year or so, a number of regional airlines have launched new flights to various points in Myanmar and/or boosted frequencies on existing routes. Its an increase in air access that comes as tourism arrivals surge, surpassing 2 million for the first time in 2013, and new hotels in Yangon and other destinations open. Tourism authorities recently announced a target of 3 million foreign tourists in 2014 and 5 million in 2015.

As the largest city and prime international gateway, a stay in Yangon is surely a must on any trip to Myanmar, offering intriguing historical sights, bustling city life and accommodation that includes some of the finest colonial hotels in Asia – such as The Strand Yangon built in 1901 and Belmond Governors Residence dating from the 1920s. Alongside luxury hotels in Yangon like these, is a choice of budget and three to five star Yangon hotels.

Introduced in September 2014 is a new online application system for a tourist visa to Myanmar. It can be applied for at www.evisa.moip.gov.mm with the application process requiring a persons passport to be valid for at least six months, one colour photo taken during the past three months and the fee (non refundable) of US$50 paid either with Visa or MasterCard.

The application website states the applicant will receive an email acknowledgement within one hour of successful payment of the US$50 fee and that the processing time of an application is up to five working days.

The E-visa is valid for a stay of up to 28 days from the date of arrival in Myanmar, with a validity period of 90 days from its issuing date. It can be used for a single entry (re-entry requires another E-visa) and currently only through Yangon International Airport, with authorities saying other ports of entry would be announced later.

Akayev willing to resign as president of Kyrgyzstan

Thursday, March 31, 2005

In an interview broadcast on Russian state-run Channel One television, deposed Kyrgyz president Askar Akayev, when asked whether he was prepared to resign as president, replied, “Of course, of course – if I am given the relevant guarantees and if it is in full accordance with the current legislation.”

He added that he had “the desire to help so that the newly elected president is legitimate.”

While acting president and prime minister Kurmanbek Bakiyev and former acting minister of securities Felix Kulov have offered him immunity, he said he would only return if parliament offered him “personal safety guarantees.”

Bakiyev warned that Akayev’s return could “give rise to mass unrest.”

In related news, acting minister of securities Felix Kulov has been removed from parliament on his own will, RIA Novosti reported the parliamentary press service as saying.

He was reported as saying that “The set goal has been achieved: the situation in our republic has stabilized.”

Lib Dems launch manifesto

Lib Dems launch manifesto
Posted by , No Comments

Thursday, April 14, 2005

An exhausted Charles Kennedy returned to the election campaign to launch a twenty page Liberal Democrat manifesto targeted at disaffected Labour voters, promising a fairer tax system and withdrawal from Iraq.

Entitled The Real Alternative the manifesto pledges to reduce the lowest rate of income tax, but increase the rate on those earning over £100,000 to 50%. The party would also scrap the unpopular local council tax in favour of a new local income tax. The manifesto also promises to remove hidden “stealth taxes”.

Under this system the party claims the poorest 15 million (25%) of people in Britain would be better off, and the middle 50% would be paying no extra tax.

The manifesto promised to scrap the controversial university tuition fees, increase services for pensioners and add £100 a month to the state pension, and train 21,000 new primary school teachers and 10,000 new police. A Lib Dem government would make eye and dental checks free, and reduce the cost of prescription medicine.

The Liberal Democrats were the only one of the three largest parliamentary parties to have consistently voted against the Iraq war, and the manifesto has promised an exit strategy with a phased withdrawal of Britain’s 8,000 troops still in the country.

“We reject a foreign policy based on ‘my ally right or wrong’,” Kennedy said. “And we say that war should always be a last resort.”

Kennedy, who became a father on Tuesday, admitted he’d had little sleep before the manifesto launch, and stumbled while answering questions on the proposed tax system.

Get The Right Team For Moving Day

byAlma Abell

As if relocating to a new home wasn’t an emotionally challenging experience already, hiring the services of a bad moving team can add to the stress, hassle and costs of the move. Get it right by looking for a better one out of the moving companies in Oak Park IL. Here’s how:

Prepare a moving inventory

A reputable moving company will always take an inventory of all your belongings. That’s why preparing a list can help speed things up. However, expect the estimator to go over all the items on the list with a walkthrough. If the estimator doesn’t or isn’t as thorough as s/he should be, that could be a marker for a less than stellar service.

Don’t pay a huge deposit

It’s normal for some moving companies to charge a deposit for the move. But if the fees are about 20 percent of the total bill or more, be wary, says Moving. You might be falling for a scam. Look elsewhere.

Get references

Don’t be afraid to request for references. Companies that are proud of the work they do and the service levels they provide will have that list ready in no time. That’s a good indication that you’re hiring the right one.

Call those numbers

Don’t consign those references to your desk drawer, though. Put them to good use. Call the numbers up. Reach out to previous clients and ask them about their moving experience with the firm. Will they recommend the company or use its services again? This gives you good insight into whether you’ve found the right moving team or not.

Consider quality

Delayed, destroyed or lost belongings – that’s the kind of service you can expect if you hire cheap. By choosing reputable moving companies in Oak Park IL, you can count on a professional and trustworthy team to demonstrate excellent handling practices and standards.

Neanderthals ‘knew what they were doing’: Archæologist Dr Naomi Martisius discusses her findings about Neanderthals’ behaviour with Wikinews

Neanderthals ‘knew what they were doing’: Archæologist Dr Naomi Martisius discusses her findings about Neanderthals’ behaviour with Wikinews
Posted by , No Comments

Sunday, June 28, 2020

Last month, a study conducted by archæologist Dr. Naomi Martisius and other researchers concluded Neanderthals living in Europe tens of thousands of years ago were more sophisticated than previously thought. The now-extinct species used to carefully select bones from a particular animal species to manufacture their bone tools, the research showed. The research was published on May 8 in Nature’s Scientific Reports journal.

Dr Martisius and her team used five bone tools discovered from Neanderthals’ sites in southwest France for this research. Four of these bone tools were found in a site called Abri Peyrony and the other one was from Pech-de-l’Azé I. These tools were just a few centimetres in size and were about 50 thousand years old, Dr Martisius told Wikinews. Microscopy analysis of these bone tools called lissoirs (smoothers) suggested Neanderthals used these tools for working animal skin to leathers.

The study stated the fauna of the sites were primarily medium-sized ungulates such as reindeer, in one layer nearly 90%. Despite the overabundance of medium-sized ungulates, Neanderthals used ribs of large bovids for making lissoirs. Dr Martisius told Wikinews this was likely due to the physical characteristics of the bovid ribs, which were “thicker” and “stronger” as compared to the “thin and flimsy ribs” of reindeers. In order to check the origins of the bone tools, the researchers used a technology called non-destructive Zooarchæology by Mass Spectrometry (ZooMS).

Instead of damaging the bone artefacts in order to discover its origins, the researchers collected collagen from the plastic containers in which these artefacts were kept. Collagen is a type of protein. These bone artefacts were kept in plastic containers: some were kept for about five years, some for just a few months. During this time, the collagen proteins from bone tools were stuck to the walls of its plastic containers. The collagen samples collected from the walls of the containers are broken into smaller molecules called peptides by using a chemical enzyme called trypsin.

After the trypsin has broken collagen fibres into peptides, it is analysed using a technology called Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization (MALDI) Time-of-Flight mass spectrometer (ToF MS). The assisting matrix is a coloured compound. The acidic peptide is combined with the matrix, vapourised, and peptides are released. Some of them are positively-charged particles which travel across a vacuum tube in an electric field. Depending on the weight of the peptides, these molecules reach the end of the vacuum tube at different instances of time, forming a spectrum. These graphs are like unique fingerprints of a species: they are different for different species of animals. Looking at the database of such graphs, taxonomic identifications of the collagen proteins came be made.

All four bone tools from Abri Peyrony gave positive results and showed that the bones were made from large bovids, even though reindeer were more abundant during that time. One of the advantages of using bovid ribs over reindeer’s thin ribs was the bovid ribs would be more resistant to breaking during flexion, Dr Martisius said.

Dr Martisius said such non-destructive ZooMS analysis was previously conducted, but for tools no older than a few centuries. She said such an analysis had never been previously conducted for artefacts so ancient.

Wikinews caught up with Dr Martisius to discuss this research in-depth.
