Australian researchers confirm stress makes you sick

Wednesday, December 7, 2005

Australian researchers say they have scientifically proven that stress causes sickness. The Garvan Institute in Sydney has discovered that a hormone, known as neuropeptide Y (NPY) is released into the body during times of stress. Their findings show the hormone can stop the immune system from functioning properly.

“Neuropeptide Y is one of those hormones that gets unregulated or released from neurones when stressful situations occur…it’s known for example that it regulates blood pressure and heart rates so your heart rate goes up but it hasn’t been known that it actually can affect immune cells as well,” said Professor Herbert Herzog, one of the researchers.

Herzog feels it is good to finally have proof of something people have suspected for so long.

“Now we have proven without doubt that there is a direct link and that stress can weaken the immune system and that makes you more vulnerable when you for example have a cold or flu and even in the more serious situations such as cancer can be enhanced in these situations,” said Herzog.

The Garvan Institute study centres on two key events that enable the human body to recognise foreign substances and control invaders. When our body encounters a pathogen (bacteria and viruses), the immune cells retain and interrogate suspects. Their activation is made possible by NPY. These cells then return to the lymph nodes, which are found all over the body, with information about the foreign invaders. The lymph nodes are where decisions about defence are made.

“Most of us expect to come down with a cold or other illness when we are under pressure, but until now we have mostly had circumstantial evidence for a link between the brain and the immune system,” said lead Garvan researcher, associate Professor Fabienne Mackay. “During periods of stress, nerves release a lot of NPY and it gets into the bloodstream, where it directly impacts on the cells in the immune system that look out for and destroy pathogens (bacteria and viruses) in the body.”

In the case of bacteria and viruses, TH1 cells are part of the attack team that is sent out on the ‘search and destroy’ mission. But when their job is done they need to be turned ‘off’ and the immune system reset. The same hormone, NPY, that activates the sentry cells now prompts the TH1 cells to slow down and die.

“Under normal conditions, circulating immune cells produce small amounts of NPY, which enables the immune cells on sentry duty and the TH1 immune cells to operate – it’s a yin and yang kind of situation. But too much NPY means that the TH1 attack is prevented despite the foreign invaders being identified – and this is what happens during stress,” added McKay.

The impact of stress on the body has been observed in athletes. Ph. D researcher at the University of Queensland, Luke Spence, together with the Australian Institute of Sport, studied elite and recreational athletes over five months.

They found elite athletes were more susceptible to respiratory diseases under stress.

“A lot of elite athletes put themselves through vast amounts of physical stress in their training, but also their emotional, psychological stress of feeling the pressure of Australia on their shoulders, wanting to compete and wanting to do their best,” said Spence.

It’s not just athletes who are prone to stress. Pressures at work and at home may cause emotional and mental stress that can be equally damaging. Almost a third of all work absenteeism in Australia is due to illness, costing employers over $10 billion a year.

“I think it has a huge impact for the work force and also for employers – if their employees are constantly stressed, constantly under pressure, they are more likely to get sick,” Spence said.

Further research could lead to the development of new drugs which may inhibit the action of the neuropeptide Y hormone.

Herzog warns people to minimise stress before it becomes a problem.

“Relaxation methods like yoga will help you to prevent that but there will still be people out there that are not responding to that and treatment by interfering with the system will be important,” he said. “There’s obviously some time until such a treatment will be available but this is something we will definitely work towards.”

The Garvan research will be published in the Journal of Experimental Medicine, Volume 202, No. 11.

Home of Stonehenge builders found

Tuesday, January 30, 2007

Scientists have uncovered the largest Neolithic settlement in the United Kingdom at the Durrington Walls and believe that the village was inhabited by the people who built the Stonehenge monument.

Scientists say that the village was built around 2,600 B.C., roughly when Stonehenge was believed to have been constructed, and housed over 100 people.

Inside the areas which would have been the interior of houses at the time, scientists also found outlines of what they think were beds and cupboards or dressers. Pieces of pottery and “filthy” rubbish around the site. Animal bones, arrowheads, stone tools and other relics were also discovered.

“We’ve never seen such quantities of pottery and animal bone and flint. In what were houses, we have excavated the outlines on the floors of box beds and wooden dressers or cupboards,” said Sheffield University archaeologist Mike Parker Pearson.

So far, the dig has revealed at least 8 houses roughly 14-16 feet square, but scientists say that they think there may have been at least 25 altogether.

The site was likely to have been occupied only seasonally rather than year-round and evidence suggests that a lot of “partying” went on at the location.

“The animal bones are being thrown away half-eaten. It’s what we call a feasting assemblage. This is where they went to party – you could say it was the first free festival. The rubbish isn’t your average domestic debris. There’s a lack of craft-working equipment for cleaning animal hides and no evidence for crop-processing,” added Pearson.

The Durrington Walls are approximately 2 miles from the Stonehenge site.

MyNino is an efficient GPS tracking application

by

terryrlittrell

Are you worried about where your child is? Or with whom your child is and whether your children are safe or not? These are some of the questions that most parents are occupied with, and if you too are a parent concerned with the same questions, here is one app that will keep you at rest. MyNino is one such app built to keep you posted about where your child is. Configuring the app in your mobile as well as in your child’s mobile will keep you informed about the child’s activities through their SMS and calls, both incoming and outgoing, as well as their GPS location.

MyNino app is designed with the objective of tracking your child. The app is a friendly one, it is a combination of two apps, that of, Parent Application and Child Application. The respective should be downloaded in the respective person’s smart phone. At present the app is compatible and available for Blackberry & Android based smart phones. But this tracking application will soon be available for various other platforms like iPhone, Windows, Symbian or J2ME.

Once the application is installed in the parent’s and the child’s smart phone then the Parent will be updated with child’s calls and consistent location details over a web server at your set intervals. The parent’s application should be installed first and then the child’s application should be installed. With this BlackBerry tracking application installed in your smart phone, parents no longer need to be tensed about their children’s safety and security. This Android GPS Tracker is one of the intelligent application to keep you posted of your child’s activities no matter if they tell you or not. It works as a GPS Tracker and uses your smart phone’s in-built GPS features. Tracking the GPS (Global Positioning System) location of your child is one of its most striking feature. Yet another extraordinary feature of the application is that it runs in the background on the child’s smart phone and is completely password protected, meaning if you don’t want your child to know of the app then they will not come to know of the fact that you can track their calls and SMS and GPS locations.

This app was built mainly for parents and to reassure them that their child is safe and secure wherever they are, or at least their parents will know of where they are if they ever need them or are in any kind of danger. Because parents are always concerned about their children and care for them immensely but cannot stay with them 24/7. Therefore, this tracking application sat least keeps them at peace as far as their child’s well-being is concerned and at the same time give the child some space and time with friends to enjoy to the fullest.

The author gives details of the

Transgender woman dies after beating in Harlem, New York

Saturday, August 24, 2013

A transgender woman attacked in Harlem, New York last week died on Thursday after being declared brain dead and taken off life support. Police are treating the death of Islan Nettles, 21, as a hate crime.

They were called faggots, they were called he-shes, she-males, things of that nature

Nettles was walking with transgender friends early on August 17 when they met a group of men opposite a local police building. Police say a fight ensued after the men discovered the group was transgender and local man Paris Wilson, 20, was arrested at the scene.

Wilson was charged by prosecutors in Manhattan with assault and harassment. Prosecutors say more serious charges could be brought after police received allegations homophobic language was used, with a hate crimes team now investigating. The death has been ruled a homicide and a spokeswoman for the New York City medical examiner’s office said Nettles was killed by “blunt impact head injuries”.

The criminal complaint Wilson presently faces says a police officer found Nettles “unconscious on the ground with a swollen shut eye and blood on her face”. Wilson is accused of punching Nettles to the ground and then repeatedly hitting her while she lay there.

Fashion became a definite decision for my life after my first show with my hand designed garments in high school

Nettles was interested in a fashion career, working as an intern for local fashion firm Ay’Medici. “Fashion became a definite decision for my life after my first show with my hand designed garments in highschool”, she wrote on LinkedIn, where she described herself as “anti-violence”. She has previously instructed fashion at Harlem Children’s Zone, undertaking studies at New York College of Technology and the Bread and Roses Integrated Arts High School.

Her mother, Dolores Nettles, told press Nettles and her friends were subject to transphobic insults. “They were called faggots, they were called he-shes, she-males, things of that nature,” she said.

Daniel L. Squadron of the New York State Senate said yesterday in a statement “Islan was 21 years old — 21 years old. And her life and future were stolen from her. Let’s be clear: intolerance, discrimination and hate have no place in New York or anywhere.” He called for the passage of a related bill he supports, the Gender Expression Non-Discrimination Act.

Wilson is presently free on bail, with a court hearing scheduled for October 4.

Gov. Bobby Jindal supports creationism as part of ‘the very best science’

Tuesday, June 17, 2008

Governor Bobby Jindal, a Republican politician from the U.S. state of Louisiana, appeared on CBS’s Face the Nation on Sunday and said he supports teaching intelligent design (ID) in public school as “the very best science.” Jindal, who was elected governor in 2007, is a Hindu convert to Catholicism who takes the Bible literally.

In his exchange on the Sunday morning talk show, “Some want only to teach intelligent design, some only want to teach evolution. I think both views are wrong, as a parent.”

In a September 2007 debate he supported the view of creationism saying, “Personally, it certainly makes sense to me that when you look at creation, you would believe in a creator.”

Recently, the Louisiana House of Representatives passed legislation, which the National Center for Science Education said “opens the door to creationism in public school science classes.” The bill is currently on his desk.

Jindal is currently considered a possible Vice President candidate for John McCain’s U.S. Presidential campaign.

Jingles For Branding And Commercials}

Jingles for Branding and Commercials

by

webmaster jingle

Today as radio comes out a great place for advertisement and promoting your products. Companies spent lot of money to promoter their products. Jingles are the only way on the radio to promote your products. The jingle had no definitive debut: its infiltration of the radio was more of an evolutionary process than a sudden innovation. Product advertisements with a musical tilt can be traced back to 1923, around the same time commercial radio came to the public.

We always give least importance to radio advertising but from a research it has been proved that radio ads are among the strongest medium that can sell things. In the harsh realities of today’s marketplace a great ad jingle can be a surefire way to crank your service and slogan to a wider audience and get your company some respect. So, what makes an advertising jingle unique? Before you lay down your valuable funds to an established jingle production company (or even to your brother Doug’s grunge band) there are many ideas you should carefully research in order to make your new advertising music as effective as it’s ever going to be.A Good jingle should have the following qualities.HumorOutstanding musicUnderstand the audienceNever lieUse a single messageIntergrate a jingle to your camoaignReward the AudienceFollowing are some useful key point.o Branding is key: plan on beginning your new advertising endeavor with a full vocal edit of your jingle and then use a different version once your jingle has been in the marketplace long enough to stick in your potential customers’ heads.o The jingles are usually composed by professionals. Since jingles are important components of the ad campaign, a lot of care is taken to ensure that only a very high quality advertising jingle is produced.o Be on alert with jingle makers that charge renewal fees. A good jingle can have a years-long shelf life, so look for a company that can provide full buyouts, or long-term licensing contracts.o It’s not suitable just to demand that your jingle be “modern.” Contemplate where you will be advertising. Ask yourself: will your easy listening style jingle find its target audience if used in a AOR format? Contemplate your music style options carefully. The key to successful branding is really in your own hands. Wal-Mart didn’t get to be the powerhouse we know today because of a smiley-face. It was because Sam Walton jumped in his truck every morning and set out to find the best deals on anything he could and used all his disposable resources to make his branding efforts true in the eyes of the consumers. Therefore it’s your job as a manager/ business owner to engrain this message into the minds of your customers. The team members in your organization also play a critical role in developing your brand because once you have marketed yourself as the leader in one aspect of your business; you must make everyone within your organization believe it first. This may not be as easy as it sounds. You must constantly remind all members of the organization that you are all collectively the best and the only way to do that is by being honest in your branding. BE the best and everyone will know it.JingleJinglesRadio Ads

Alfred Hsing, a US martial artist with Chinese origins, besides having a long history of martial arts training in various styles, such as traditional kung fu, tae kwon do and karate, considers wushu – an athletic sport based on Chinese martial arts – as a form of art that pushes one’s physical limits and stimulates the mind at the same time. After having won the gold medal at the 10th World Wushu Championships, he became international movie star Jet Li’s personal assistant and went on to do stunts, action choreography, and land roles in movies.

Hungarian Wikinews contributor Teemeah has interviewed Alfred Hsing about his views on martial arts, life and Wikipedia.

Wikinews interviews a Restore the Fourth organizer

Wikinews interviews a Restore the Fourth organizer
Posted by , No Comments

Wednesday, July 3, 2013

A grassroots movement known as Restore the Fourth, dedicated to the protection of the 4th Amendment to the US Constitution, are to hold protests countrywide on July 4. The planned protests come in the wake of information about NSA surveillance leaked last month, notably the PRISM surveillance program and the collection of Verizon phone records. Wikinews interviewed Jett, a national organizer from this recently created movement.

((Wikinews)) First of all, could you explain what Restore the Fourth is all about?

Jett: At its core, RestoreTheFourth is about protecting citizens’ constitutional rights. Specifically, we’re dedicated to bringing awareness and action to the expanding overreach and elimination of the 4th Amendment to the US Constitution.

((WN)) What is your role at Restore the Fourth?

Jett: My job at RestoreTheFourth could be summarized as ‘project coordinator’. Every person who wants to help can help in a tremendous way. I simply make sure that their skills get used in a way that would be most beneficial to the movement: web development, public relations, etc. I also field questions from the press and promote knowledge of our cause.

((WN)) What are your plans for direct action, outreach, etc.?

Jett: Our press release includes a list of ‘demands’ for what we want to see in order to restore our privacy rights, including reform of the PATRIOT Act and increased accountability for public officials. In the very short term, these protests and demonstrations bring awareness to the issue, something that’s really important in enacting reform. In the long term, however, we expect to create a legal organization dedicated to restoring these rights inherent to every American. By partnering with various other organizations that share our moral values, we can further these goals.
On July 4, we will have over 100 protests in all 50 states, showing that the citizens of America are truly serious about protecting their rights.

((WN)) By what means do you hope to achieve such change?

Jett: This movement started only a few weeks ago, and since then we’ve experienced exponential growth and progress. Since the movement is still very young, plans diverge in the long term on what we hope to achieve. Personally, I’d like to see a combination of legislative and litigative action (something like what the ACLU does), and others want to see further plans of action. With organizations such as the BORDC, stopwatching.us and the EFF behind us, I feel that we can achieve all of this and much more.
HAVE YOUR SAY
What do you think is the right balance between surveillance and privacy?
Add or view comments

((WN)) Is the movement US-only or will it extend to other jurisdictions as well? Do you think it would be fair for the US to spy on non-citizens?

Jett: I believe that rights are inherent to all humans, not only United States citizens. In the long term I’d certainly like to see people of all nations protected from the slow elimination of privacy that we’re all experiencing.
He’s [Edward Snowden] being treated as a ‘martyr’ of sorts. It seems to distract from what he truly believed in.

((WN)) What do you think about Edward Snowden’s whistleblowing?

Jett: I think that too much attention is being given to his personality instead of what he fought for. He’s being treated as a ‘martyr’ of sorts. It seems to distract from what he truly believed in — transparency for the government and inherent privacy for all Americans.

((WN)) What do you think about his future, given the legal grey zone in which he currently is?

Jett: Hard to say. He may be captured by any number of agencies, or he may live a free man. Whatever happens, he has the eyes of millions of people on him, all of whom will yell very loudly if anything occurs.

((WN)) Thank you very much for your time.

Jett: Thanks for the opportunity.

Why You Need Roaches Treatment In Kapolei

byAlma Abell

Nobody wants to live with roaches. However, when a roach is spotted in the home, the individual may assume it was one carried in hidden inside a grocery bag or brought in with a package that was mailed to the home. Don’t make any assumptions, as roaches have been proven to be damaging to a person’s health. As a result, Roaches Treatment Kapolei should be sought immediately. What are some health problems that may arise as a result of roaches in the home?

The Spread of Bacteria

As roaches eat human food, they leave behind unwanted surprises for the humans that later consume the food. For example, roaches are known to carry the bacterium known as Pseudomonas aeruginosa in their gut in large quantities. Every time they eat human food, they regurgitate digestive food and saliva on the surface of the food. When a human then eats the food, he or she may contract a disease, such as digestive issues, a urinary tract infection or sepsis. Removing roaches from the home helps to reduce the risk of these medical conditions.

Allergies and Asthma

Cockroach saliva as well as the roach’s body parts are home to hundreds of allergens. When a human comes into contact with one or more of these allergens, he or she may have an allergic reaction and begin sneezing. His or her eyes may water and a rash may appear on the skin. Even more concerning is the fact that the allergens often bring about asthma in children when there is an infestation in the home. This can be dangerous, as asthma has been known to cause death.

If you have seen a roach in the home, know that they are likely many more, possibly in the hundreds or thousands, that are present but haven’t been seen. These creatures can survive almost anything. In fact, it is believed they would make it through a nuclear explosion unscathed. Home remedies typically don’t work when it comes to eliminating these pests also. As a result, every homeowner who has seen a roach or suspects the home has these unwanted guests should call for Roaches Treatment Kapolei right away. It’s simply not worth it to live with the problem and hope for the best. The health of the home’s occupants may depend on quick action so don’t delay. Make this call to Bowman Termite & Pest Management LLC today. You can also connect them on Facebook.
